Kristin Campbell So we have all heard that 'Fifty Shades of Grey' is a 'Twilight' parody. Here is SOME of the similarities I found between the books.

SPOILER ARLERT: BE WARNED

Characters: the same
Girls: long brown hair, mousy, uncoordinated, smart
Guys: auburn hair, low self-worth, rich, hot, turn heads, sensual movements

Always in danger
Overly protective males
Girls have issues with guys buying them things
Guy’s first girlfriend
Family is so happy the guys found someone
Characters from totally different worlds and backgrounds
Guys never sleep. Girls sleep a lot
Confession of marriage comes at surprising time
Boat during honeymoon
Pregnancy is unwanted by guy
Girls have ‘soulful’ eyes
Guys are predators, girl prey
Guys warn girl to stay away, that they are dangerous or not for them
Girls were virgin
Guys can’t cook
Girls almost die in labor
A meadow
Guys play piano exceptionally well
Girls transition from uncoordinated to graceful
Guys hot headed and jealous
Guys read minds: one literal, one metaphorical
Guys are car lovers
Car lovers with thought of safety in a car for girl
Guys leave girls speechless
Girls are said to be ‘born old’
Similar conversations
Taken place in Washington
Fathers are “taciturn” and live in Washington
Mothers live in the southeast
Dads love fishing
Guys ask dads for permission to marry
The similarities are endless…

Ashley Add on mother is kind of a spazz
Father or in this case step-father is protective and working class
Girl spends so much time going "OMG he's too hot and good for me I don't deserve this because I'm not as attractive as him."

Basically this took all the things I did NOT like about Twilight and added sex to it.

*Sigh*

Amy You both are 100% dead on. Can anyone say "rip off"?

message 4: by Whitney (new) - added it

Whitney Brooker Ana and Bella also both have the male best friend that is romantically interested in them (Jacob/Jose).

Jenna hell there were parts in the first fifty shades that were almost word for word with parts in twilight i just thought the author was horrible

Kristin Campbell I thought of two more similarities.

The honeymoon was a secret
The guys always had to carry the girl over every threshold.

Eva King and you have forgotten, she works in a hardware store...

Jenna bella worked in a sporting goods store lol

Nina Don't forget how Edward saves Bella from getting hit by a car and Christian "saves" Ana from getting hit by a biker (which I actually LOLd about)

message 11: by Kirby (new) - added it

Kirby also, both the girl's call their dad by his first name, and both their names are shortened versions of antiquated names.

Kristin Campbell girls talk in their sleep and make unconscious "confessions".

message 13: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 50 Shades of Grey was originally written as a Twilight fanfiction called "Master of the Universe."

Mochaspresso This could be fun. I'll play......

Guy is adopted by a loving family and has several adopted brothers and sisters that he is close to. Girl is an only child who ingratiates herself into the adopted guy's family.

Girl likes to read classics. Guys has read them but doesn't think much of the "hearts and flowers" classic authors.

Girl thinks of herself as plain but all the guys around her have a crush on her.

Guy does not like girl's car because he doesn't think it is safe and hates it even more when he finds out that the girl got it from the friend that has a crush on her. Guy then makes it his mission in life the get rid of the old car by any means necessary and get her a new one.

Guy stalks girl and watches her sleep.

Girl is insanely jealous of an beautiful old flame from the Guy's past. Guy isn't even remotely interested in the old flame but the girl is jealous anyway. (Tanya/Elena)

Guy is constanstly smelling the girl and telling her how wonderful she smells.

Guy has bossy and manipulative tendencies. Guy also tries to hide danger from girl with the intent of protecting her.

Christine Along with her mother being a spaz, she is overprotective of her mom who has now married a semi-responsible man to whom her mothers care has been entrusted, aka Phil.

Helen Stevens Its a twilight fanfic, not a parody. And you can tell. How a plotless fanfic had become a bestseller is a bit beyond my comprehension. Apparently most of tne book buying population dont require plot and are satisfied as long as a book has some kinky sex in it.

Completely agree. If you took the sex scenes out of this series, it is about a couple who is in an abusive relationship and fight a lot. That's pretty much it.

Tabby wow. that's just too damn funny.

Donna West Love it! This is one of the funniest threads I have read in ages. I think the 50 shades trilogy just goes to show that with enough hype, you can sell anything. Such a shame the twilight books have been used in this way.

Sparrowlicious Helen wrote: "Its a twilight fanfic, not a parody. And you can tell. How a plotless fanfic had become a bestseller is a bit beyond my comprehension. Apparently most of tne book buying population dont require pl..."
If I wasn't so amused about this book I would probably cringe at the thought that many really good authors don't get published while this crap made it. The world's still about vitamin B, baby.

Katrina Passick Lumsden Let's not forget Jake Jose! Minority race (except he's Mexican instead of Native American), totally hot, puppy dog-like crush on Bella Ana. Won't go away.

Oh, there's also the bruising sex romp during the honeymoon. I'm sure I'll think of more,

message 25: by Katrina (last edited Jul 02, 2012 05:49AM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Katrina Passick Lumsden Oh, the parents. Christian's "mom" is a doctor, Edward's "dad" is a doctor. E.L. James made Christian's dad a...was he a lawyer? My brain's been systematically blocking things out since I finished those books, so there are great hulking voids in my memory of it.

message 26: by Amy (new)

Amy Didn't Bella chew on her lip too? Or don't I remember right?

Kristin Campbell I don't remember the lip but it reminds me that there was a comment on both books about a V forming between the brows that the guys smoothed away of kissed.

message 28: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna also a pyscho was after both girls (leila and James) pyscho stalker and pyscho tracker lol

message 29: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Lol totally agree. Why this has become popular is beyond me.

message 31: by Colette (last edited Jul 03, 2012 04:06PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Colette It's because 50 was originally fanfiction, the author had such a positive response she turned it into a trilogy.

message 32: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna both guys go ridgid when their girl touches them

message 33: by Kirby (new) - added it

Kirby Amy wrote: "Didn't Bella chew on her lip too? Or don't I remember right?"

I'm almost 100% positive that you're right on that!

Mochaspresso Girl's friend makes an "unwanted" pass at girl by kissing her.

Girl doesn't like it when guy has to leave her for short periods of time (Edward to hunt, Christian to work) and she always seems to find trouble when she's left to her own devices.

Every party that the girl goes to at the guy's family house gets ruined in some way.

When guy was confused about his relationship with girl, it is an old flame who helps him gain some perspective. Old flame is the one who tells him that he is in love with the girl and that he should go to her. (Edward goes to Denali and talks to Tanya. Christain has dinner with Elena.)

message 35: by Katy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Katy Must admit I enjoyed twilight and fifty shades but I would agree with the earlier comment that there are so many good authors out there with much better story lines and don't get half the acknowledgement...enjoyed the thread though, very funny :)

message 36: by Ami (new) - added it

Ami B To be fair, it did start out as a twilight fanfiction, not that any TWILIGHT fanfiction is going to be anywhere near decent.

message 37: by Amy (new)

Amy Ami wrote: "To be fair, it did start out as a twilight fanfiction, not that any TWILIGHT fanfiction is going to be anywhere near decent."

It's not fair that the author is reaping the benefits of ripping off another author's characterization.

Donna West Did I hear correctly that these books were self published? I guess time will tell if the author, whose name I have already forgotten, has any talent beyond using other people's story lines.

Tracey Smith I was a fan of Twilight, but did feel it left something lacking in the sex department (being YA and all). Then comes along 50 shades, the story I already loved with the sex to boot. I think this is why it is popular. Stephanie Meyer came up with an interesting story line. EL James added sex to it. I didn't realize this was originally fan fiction when I read the first book, and I kept going "This is Twilight!". Now that I know that it was an intentional copy-cat I'm not sure if I feel better about it. As a writer myself I wouldn't want someone taking one of my books and changing the names, twisting a few plot points and becoming a best-selling author off my idea. That being said, I did buy all 3 books. Maybe because of the Twilight nostalgia and because I did enjoy the sexy add-ons. I am curious though what Stephanie Meyer thinks of this trilogy's success.

Tracey Smith Oh and as for similarities... Edward takes Bella running, Christian takes Ana gliding. Then at IHOP (or diner) there is the conversation about how he dazzles the waitress and Bella/Ana admits that he dazzles her too. That conversation was almost word for word!

Kristin Campbell Has it been added that she feels a shock or electric vibrations when they first touch?

S.L.J. Why isn't this guy in a straight-jacket?

Melina You forgot that the girls are helpless pricks.

message 49: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna no one said anything about VAMPIRES. We are talkin about other similarities. and the Author herself said she got the idea from twilight its what got her to write it. its a fan fiction so YES there is similarities and Dracula isnt the first vampire story, there are legends thru out histroy about vampires so there fore Bram stoker also didnt INVENT vampires

Tracey Smith At the begining of 50 Shades Darker Ana is so depressed over the break-up that she can't even stand listening to music... Or was that New Moon... No it was Darker :p
