I honestly liked both books. I felt that If I Stay was more heart wrenching because she's watching everyone around her suffer and she's suffering but can't do anything about it. She's trapped. I guess I didn't like that things had changed for them (even though it's obvious they would because that's real life). I was a little bored at first with Where She Went, but that book really picks up. I felt that If I Stay took longer to get into because Mia wasn't easy for me to relate to. I related more to Adam in If I Stay than I did in Where She Went. But either way, I would honestly read both books.
To summarize, it won't really matter if you read Where She Went without If I Stay, but I feel that because the point of view switches to the other person, you have a deeper understanding of both characters from reading both.

I found If I Stay extremely boring. I couldn't connect with Mia at all. Yes, the story was heart breaking but I didn't feel a thing. It was probably the writing style. I'm not a big fan of books with lots of flashbacks. I honestly only read it through so I could read Where she went which I enjoyed much more.
I loved Adam's POV, I could actually connect with him and feel his pain. I hated what Mia did to him, the way she just ended things by just disappearing. I kept think about the Gotye song 'Somebody that I used to know' as I read it. In the end, I did get her reasoning, but I still thought that she didn't deserve Adam's love.

Where She Went is obviously better. The first was like a dream, a fantasy, but the second was a raw look into emotion and how certain choices react, I mean Mia being angry at him for waking her up is chocolate golden goodness. It's more than her story, more than her, it's them togeher. If I Stay was good, but it wasn't real. Adam's anger was bitter and a little cruel and so rock star emotional and what was needed. I mean of course he didn't track her down, that's not love, though all the movies and books now a days makes it out that way. Love is letting her go and hoping she comes back, which she did after she found herself. Besides them breaking up early is probably what saved them in the first place, otherwise they would have stayed together and resented each other, him for her not fighting and her for him making her fight. Mia had to become the girl who lost her family, she had to become someone else. The old Mia had died in that car and the new Mia wasn't ready for Adam's pity wrapped in love. Both books were good, but Adam's was better. The first was past and the second was accepting that the future sometimes has nothing and everything to do with what you left behind.
If I Stay is better ...more emotional and heart wrenching than Where She Went
I found Where she went way better, I could really see how the accident and the recovery period affected Adam, someone Partial, if we may say, and I think the author felt more confortable talking though Adam, because I couldn't stop thinking about him and those feelings and the entire books for a while .
Where She Went
. I absolutely loved it. You get to see the characters from another perspective... it is so, so emotional, and these emotions are conveyed so well that you feel like you know Adam and Mia, you feel like they are real people. It is heartbreaking and tragic, but it is just brilliant. Something about
Where She Went
is just enchanting and captivating, it is a beautiful story. Gayle Forman is a genius. A must read.
Where she went is a lot better than If I stay in my opinion. Mia and Adam's relationship in If I Stay kinda bored me. Where she went felt real and honest.
If I stay.....(the original idea)
Where she went represents the missing pages from If I stay... it should've been only one book

I find that really they're hard to compare to each other. I loved both. In If I Stay I really got to see how Mia felt conflicted throughout the entire book. You really got a sense of the desire to live and how she wanted everything to go back to normal versus the other part of her coming to the realization that if she did stay nothing would be the same. She was going to be an orphan and on her own. Throughout that book it's her making the decision to either stay or go and be with the rest of her family. I loved Where she went too. In this book they're adults and you can see how apart they had grown and how they went both there separate ways. After the car crash it had left them both different and throughout this book they really had to get to know each other all over again. They were both bitter and angry with how the chain of events affected their entire life. I loved though that in this book you really felt their love. It wasn't just puppy love anymore. In this book you knew it was the real deal.
So I loved them both. I feel like you kind of have to read both to get a sense of both characters and to see there growth. I feel like if you were to just read If I stay you are going to be left with this that's it?? at the end. And I feel like if you just read Where She Went you really won't be able to sympathize with the raw emotions they are feeling. Both books are amazing and the author did an amazing job portraying the story and characters very well.

I love both books but I think Where She Went was more heartbreaking than If I Stay. We haven't really gotten a lot of glimpse of Adam in If I Stay, and I think the sequel was written to justify that. You could really feel his emotions and the pain and everything that goes along with it, but the ending was really nice. :)
Where She Went. I can connect to that book really well from experiences I've had in my own life. If I Stay was amazing but also depressing and heart wrenching.
I got my heartbreak in If I Stay but still I really love the book.
Between the two, i'd choose "If I stay". The love the way it cliff hang on the end, add that to way Gayle Forman wrote Mia's choice on a subtle way. It makes you wonder what her choice really is. Most of all, i love the way this book measures life- gave me a lot to think about.

I liked If I Stay, but I loved Where She Went.
Firstly, Where She Went has an unfair advantage because I read If I Stay after watching and falling in love with the movie trailer. I was expecting it to be longer and more heart wrenching than it turned out to be.
I also got really annoyed with If I Stay because Mia could hardly say anything in the present without going into some backflash, when all I wanted was to get on with the story.
Where She Went pulled at my heartstrings, making me scream for answers and for Adam. I just didn't have that same reaction with If I Stay. Plus, Where She Went had more action, I guess.

If I Stay was much better! I don't know why but the second book was totally not what I expected when I bought it... Maybe I had too high expectations?
I would have to say that this book, though still not a masterpiece is certainly much better written than "If I Stay" which was very immaturely written - it definitely read like a first novel. I found Forman wrote her characters as a cheesy, goofy, cliche who were incapable of forming in depth thoughts or perspectives. I found myself detached from her characters and almost exasperated by their nonsensical actions and thoughts. I found certain scenes especially the chaos Adam caused at the hospital to be unrealistic, cheesy and just plain inappropriate - even as I was reading it I was begging the author not to go there for her own sake. If she wanted to write such a heart-breaking novel then why make the characters actions so whimsical? All in all the novel was just a cringe-worthy attempt at a dark, almost Gothic mystery that a woman of her age should've known would come across as cringe-worthy and false. However "where she went" was mostly marked so high by myself purely because the author had taken such drastic steps to improve her writing and the maturity level of her novel by dulling down the over-dramatics and giving her characters real life situations to work with, a triumph on her part that will serve her well to continue. Also another comment on the author herself is that she, for some reason despite being female, writes far better from a male perspective and should really stick with male characters. Her characters matured, their problems matured, their memories matured and indeed their perspectives and thoughts too. Although there is still many scenes that are simply too dramatic the cringe-factor is invoked once more. The dramatic love making scene that could only ever be witnessed in a Katherine Heigl movie (sorry to say kids it doesn't work that way) was almost repelling - a rusty nail stuck in the middle of a story which up to that point had ran smoothly. Which again added an whimsical sense to the novel. However due to the dramatic maturity in writing, though she's still not there yet, I will stand by my three stars granted to Gayle Forman and hope she continues to alter her writing until it's at the standard I feel it really could be. Definitely a novel better than it's predecessor!
I enjoyed both books, they were both good in their own perspective but if I had to choose from those to books I would prefer If I Stay more than Where She Went!
I agree with the original poster! I had a hard time getting through the beginning 1/3rd of Where She Went. All the self-pity! Once the pieces started falling into place though, a great book. Even though they're a series, they're hard to compare - Mia's perfect life & Adam's distress.
I liked both -- but I prefer If I Stay. I loved the outcome of both books...and I hope they make it into a film -- because it would be awesome to see the characters evolve into the next story line.
i liked If I Stay. But I definitrly love Where She Went. It really touched my heart. Adam is very... I dont find a word. But really. I love his character.
if i stay has more emotion and where she went just sickened me til the very end
I think if I stay was more interesting and more fast paced. I liked it a lot better.
if i Stay. If i stay put the family first, it's not another love story. But Where She Went it's more like carried stereotypes.
*But i like both*
*But i like both*
They're very different. I found Where She Went much more mature. If I Stay could be a bit melodramatic, and was definitely caught up in the YA conceit that whoever you date when you're 16 is obviously your one true love and soulmate. Where She Went takes place when Adam and Mia are older and more mature, and it also looks at the consequences of their relationship in a way that most YA novels don't consider. Where She Went goes to some very dark places. And there's something lovely and fascinating about two people simply wandering around New York City all night trying to explain why they keep hurting each other. If I Stay is fairly on par for course for YA. Where She Went is unexpected in the best way possible.
Of course, the message of Where She Went is that Mia and Adam are soul mates, or at least need each other for mental health stability more than they need to be apart. If I Stay seemed like a typical teen romance. Where She Went convinced me this was different.

I think Where She Went was the better book. I enjoyed If I Stay but when I reread it, I realized I only really liked all of the supporting characters, especially Adam. I absolutely loved Adam and having a WHOLE book from his perspective was amazing. I hope Gayle Forman writes another book strictly on just Adam's character, without any influence by Mia.
- no hate to If I Stay though (:

I got bored with If I stay. I thought it was predictable and the story didn't affect me that much. I didn't relate to Mia or Adam and I guess I only liked Kim. Reading Where she went was much more enjoyable. The beginning was kinda off but it got much better after understanding where Adam came from. Mia was cruel but I guess since her life was wrecked in a moment she is allowed to. Adam was pitiful in the beginning but I could relate to him much more with the development of the story. I honestly didn't like the fact that she still hears her family! It was better with just the surreal feeling and memories..
Personally, I felt that Where She Went was sooooooooooo much better. At first, I found I was forcing myself to begin If I Stay, due to the recommendations my friends gave me. In the end, I loved the storyline, but hated the ending. I wanted to reade Where She Went because I thought maybe Adam's perspective would be better. And boy, was I right! Adam's personality shone through a lot more, and it was easier to connect to his character than Mia's in If I Stay. It was a really good follow up, as it answered all your questions you wanted to know during If I Stay, and showed that his character isn't a complete asshole- even when you wanted to hate him the whole time you couldn't. Sometimes it's hard to realize how other genders think, and Gayle Forman did an outstanding job with Adam.
I think that both books are amazing in there own way. they are so different that they are hard to compare. Even though they are both love stories and they are so different, I personally do not like books that are only love stories, I like them mixed in with a really good plot. So if I wouldn't have read "If I Stay" I'm sure that I wouldn't have like "Where She Went." But the combination of both books are amazing!
I liked both books but Where she went was the best. I liked how both books went into the past and in the present. and how it all seemed to happen in less than a day.
I agree with many: the story of "If I Stay" is good but the human that seems Adam "Where She Went" is perfect. So I prefer below.

I prefer books that are written in the male's perspective... so I think I would pick Where She Went.
