1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.I didn't think they would kill Micah, but I know that back in those times the punishments were harsher. I was even more upset by the fact that they killed Lady. I am wondering if this is going to symbolize, Sansa turning her back on th Stark house.
2. Thoughts on Bran's dreams before he woke up? Do you think he'll remember everything? Do you think it was a dream or will he now see things? Could he have the same powers as Varys whom Catelyn referred to as a spider?
I thought the dream was weird. I never pictured a crow as a good omen. I think he may possibly see things. I don't look at Varys as being a good person. I would hope that Bran's powers would be used for the good.
3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?
Isn't Tyrion the only Lannister at the wall? I don't think they are keeping an eye on Bran. I think that they thought their original plan was going to work. I was thinking myself that Tyrion was being set up by his brother and sister when they sent his dagger with the man to kill Bran.
4. After hearing about the Dagger being Tyrion's do you suspect he's more involved with his siblings plans then you may have previously thought?
As I said before, I think he was set up.
5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home?
I think that she had to get to the bottom of the situation with Bran and while it may not be the best situation, she is trying her best to show that they are not weak and will not break.
6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?
I am not sure what to think about the mantra. Maybe it has something to do with being brave in the face of danger? It could also have to do with being prepared.
7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?
I think that he didn't fully know what he was getting into and I feel sad that he didn't get to experience life before he was sent to the wall, but I don't think he had a choice.
8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?
I think he is just trying to save Jon from heartache. I think that he is right and being honest, although I think he was a bit harsh in the way he gave the advice. Maybe he needed to be though.
9. Jon made an enemy. That cannot be good. Any thoughts on what Ser Alliser will do?
He is an old man, surely he won't take revenge on him, but you know he will. I don't like the man.
10. Do you think Tyrion is a "nice" guy or is he hoping to turn Jon against his family?
I want Tyrion to be a nice guy but I am not sure.
11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming?
I hope so. I think that the direowolves are important in what is going to happen with the Others.

1. The treasury is more than 6 millions in debt . Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?
The whole time I was reading this I kept thinking it was just a plot to get Ned to do something to pit the King against him. I am not sure though because the more we learn about Robert, the more I am beginning to question his ability to rule.
2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?
So far it seems like he is a bit revengeful without thinking about the consequences. It also seems like he is a bit of a coward when it comes to doing things he knows are wrong. I think he is self-centered and has been blinded by the Lannisters.
3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?
I am not sure on this one, the way Catelyn described him, I thought he was a bit slimey and probably shouldn't be trusted. I don't like Catelyn though so its hard to trust what she feels.
4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?
I think with all of the foreshadowing we have gotten so far it would be unwise for them to push aside Mormont's request. I think that something is brewing to the North and people are maybe complacent due to what the world has been like for awhile.
5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?
I am not sure how I feel about Tyrion. At first I thought he might be an ally but now so much has happened and I am not sure anymore. I have no idea about his journey.
6. Jon seems to have heeded Tyrion's and Donal Noye's advice. And after Bran's news, he seems to have matured a bit. We also learn that Ben is also missing. And Jon's statement also seems to be some kind of omen. Has anything happened to Ben? Will Jon have to go after him?
I think Ben is just detained. I think it would be a bit odd for Martin to just kill him off without having one chapter from his point of view. I could be wrong though. I don't know what to think of Jon and his saying he is going to hunt for Ben. I don't think it will end well if he does.
7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?
I doubt Sansa will allow Arya to reconcile with her. Sansa appears to be like her mother. I don't like her at all.
8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?
I agree. It sounds like Arya is going to end up being somewhat of a warrior princess, while Sansa is going to be the gentle snob.
9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?
I think she is going to become a key player in all that occurs. I loved the part where her brother got what was coming to him. I hope Dany doesn't use her power to do something stupid.
10. Man, looks like the eggs might just turn viable. Are we going to see dragons? Does this have any significance more with Dany as the one who might "Wake" the dragon? Such an interesting possibility, isn't it?
I hope we see dragons, that would make the story that much better. Hmm...that is an interesting possibility.
11. And looks like Dany is pregnant (As an aside, so soon???). What will be the significance of the baby? And with the dragon egg on the other side as well?
Well they are having intercourse every single night and its not like they had birth control in those days. I am wondering what will happen with the baby myself. Its too early to really know what kind of role it will play in the grand scheme of things.

Lisarenee's Questions for Chapter 16 (Eddard) - Chapter 19 (Jon)
1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.
This was so sad! Very hard to read. These Lannisters are heartless people.
3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?
As Laura said above, Tyrion is the only Lannister on the Wall. I don’t see Cersei or Jaime going anywhere near the Wall unless absolutely necessary, hehe.
5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home?
I probably would have done the same, were I in her situation. It wasn’t really ideal, leaving her children at home, with Bran not yet awake, but who else could go? It needed to be taken care of quickly and quietly.
6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?
I think it’s a reminder that winter will always be coming. Summer may be here now, it may go on for years, but it will always be followed by winter, and yes, you must be prepared for it.
7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?
Laura makes a good point here - he didn’t really have a choice. Catelyn wanted him gone and he couldn’t go to King’s Landing.
8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?
I think he said some things that needed to be said. Jon needed a bit of a wake-up.
11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming?
I love this name! And I don’t remember this name being mentioned in the TV series, so I enjoyed reading it.
Vi's Questions for Chapter 20 (Eddard) to Chapter 23 (Daenrys)
1. The treasury is more than 6 millions in debt . Did that surprise you? What do you think are its implications? Do you think that it is really 6 million in debt or was it made out to be to that amount?
This number really surprised me when I first heard it/read it. How on earth could Robert have spent this much? It astounds me that he could be so reckless.
2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?
Again, reckless. His behavior suggests that he cares only about himself, and not for the people he has been tasked to rule.
4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?
Yes, very much so. You can tell by Tyrion’s thoughts - he said that if he brought Mormont’s request to the King and the Lannisters, he would be ignored. People do not care about what is beyond the Wall, even if it will soon affect them.
9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?
LOVED this scene. It was so satisfying for Dany to put Viserys in his place. She’s adapted very well to the Dothraki and to her place with them.

11 - Hah, good point. In the TV series, Dany appears much older, so when I read that she was 13 (and then 14) here, it was a little more shocking.

1. Gah! They killed Lady and then Micah. I thought Micah would get off with just punishment not death. Did anyone see that coming? Wonder where Nymeria is? I love how the wolves are so smart.
I think the wolves are a sweet addition to this story and I'm very surprised they killed Lady. It broke my heart. And Micah! Ugh that just made me angry!! I was shocked and so sad!
2. Thoughts on Bran's dreams before he woke up? Do you think he'll remember everything? Do you think it was a dream or will he now see things? Could he have the same powers as Varys whom Catelyn referred to as a spider?
Interesting.. See this is why I like having the discussion questions because a lot of times they open up my mind more to the story and make me see things I wouldn't have normally. Different people's points of view and all that. I never even thought about Bran having powers but how cool if he does! He's one of my favorites.
3. Do you think the Lannisters went to the wall so they could keep an eye on Bran's situation without being obvious? Why did they go to the wall in the first place?
I think they dug themselves in a hole and are scrambling to get out of it. Ned is a very important person to the king and there is only so much they can do without anyone knowing.
4. After hearing about the Dagger being Tyrion's do you suspect he's more involved with his siblings plans then you may have previously thought?
I'm hoping not. I really like Tyrion and am rooting for him to be one of the good guys!
5. Do you think Catelyn was wise to leave home?
Wise? Maybe. Maybe not. But I think it was the right thing for her to do.
6. So what are your thoughts on the mantra "Winter is coming"? What do you think it means? Could it be another way of saying be prepared?
I'm still lost on that one. It could possibly be another way of saying be prepared. Who knows?
7. Do you think it was a mistake for Jon to come to the Wall?
Poor Jon.. He had it all glorified in his mind and the reality was really terrible. I feel sorry for the guy and hope maybe he can figure a way out. He's such a sweetheart, probably my favorite, although that's hard to say. I have so many favorites! Lol!
8. Initial thoughts of Donal Noye and the advice and the information he gave Jon?
Sometimes the truth hurts.
9. Jon made an enemy. That cannot be good. Any thoughts on what Ser Alliser will do?
I think most definitely he won't let it go. There will be a confrontation sometime soon.
10. Do you think Tyrion is a "nice" guy or is he hoping to turn Jon against his family?
I'm definitely putting faith in him being a nice guy. I have a good feeling about him.
11. Bran named his wolf Summer. Does this mean he'll have something to do with them getting through whatever terrible events are coming?
Hmmm.. Very possibly!

Lisa Kay’s Questions for June 15 - Chapter 24 (Bran) - Chapter 27 (Eddard)
1) Were you caught up in Old Nan’s story about the last hero? Do you think there are still children of the haunted forest in the far North? How do you think Old Nan’s version of story ends; happy like Bran believes?
I was caught up in it, yes. Her story about winter was so creepy, wasn’t it? It literally gave me chills.
5) What did you make of Sansa & Arya’s dreams of Bran?
They were interesting. I wonder why all the Stark children have so many strange dreams.
6) What was your first impression of Samwell Tarly; did it change any after hearing his life story? Did you agree with Jon’s thought that “it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice”? What was the meaning of Jon’s dream of Winterfall?
Jon’s thought is pretty profound. I didn’t really like Sam at first (I was frustrated that he wouldn’t just do something, anything, to defend himself), but after hearing his story and hearing everything he’d been through, I like him much more. I can’t believe his father would do something like that to him.
7) Were you surprised Jon had Ghost partaken in straightening Rast out by leaping onto his chest? “Remember, we know where you sleep.” Impressed he used that variation on Donal Noye's words of advice? How close a bond has been formed between all these youths of the Night’s Guard?
I really loved this bit. Not surprised that Jon used Ghost - he is pretty intimidating. And I don’t think it’s surprising they’ve gotten so close. They’re all in this together.
Lisarenee's Questions for Chapter 28 (Catelyn) - Chapter 31 (Tyrion)
1. What did you think of Catelyn this time around? Do you think she did the right thing or should she have talked to Tyrion before having him taken into custody?
Well, I think that, no matter what you think of her, she’s trying to do the best for her son and for her family. Her mistrust of the Lannisters is very understandable.
8. What did you think of The Hound's story about Ser Gregor?
Terrifying! How could someone do that to his own brother? It makes you a little sympathetic (a little) to him. And terrified of Ser Gregor. Eesh.
Lisarenee's Questions for Chapter 32 (Arya) - Chapter 35 (Eddard)
1. Found all of Ayra's training to be interesting and fun. Were you surprised her father did not believe what she heard even after he found out Daenery's was pregnant?
I think that parents often tune children out when they start babbling. Especially if they’re busy. I would think that he would listen to her, though, as she’s much smarter than other kids her age.
3. Did you agree with Eddard declining the office of the King's Hand?
I don’t think I could have stayed as long as he did. What a frustrating, maddening job, and with such frustrating, maddening people around you, too.
4. Do you think Catelyn was wrong for going to see her sister? Why do you think she didn't travel back the same way she came?
I understand her reasons for doing so. She was anxious to uncover more about Jon Arryn’s death and Lysa might be able to give her those answers. She was very clever, too, the way she misled everyone about where they were all headed.

1. How's your perception of Dothrakis? What do you think of them as a civilization?
I think they’re a very unique civilization. I love the idea that their entire world and well-being is build upon and based around a horse. They ride it, they worship it, and they eat it. Strange, but creative.
4. With all the events that are taking place now, do you agree that Catelyn was wrong in going to Lysa place?
I said this above, but I think she had good intentions. She and Ned are desperately trying to get to the bottom of Jon Arryn’s death, and she believed that Lysa would help her with that.
5. Tyrion took a very bold chance. What do you think he was trying to achieve?
Well, he had to do something, or they were just going to “make him fly” regardless of his testimony. I think he was desperately trying to think of something that might get him out of this horrible predicament.
6. Bah, Robert is soo not on my like-list. Now he wants Ned back as the Hand. What do you think of this?
I think Robert knows that Ned is his only true friend, so he really does want him around. Better Ned than Jaime Lannister, that’s for sure. Really frustrating, though, that Robert won’t take any of Ned’s advice.

2. I agree that Lysa is a bad influence on her son and he should be fostered. She seems slightly unbalanced. Anyone agree or disagree? She seems consumed by hate. I'm suspecting something more happened than just her husband being poisoned. Any ideas?
She seems such a bad influence on her son, I agree! She’s nuts. And her son is awful, too! “Make him fly, make him fly!” Gah! He could definitely use some time away from her. Lots and lots of time away from her.
3. Loved that Jon tried to convince them to use Sam in another capacity and stop the torture of his training. Do you think they'll take his advice? I kept hoping he'd go home.
I love how he compared Maester Aemon’s chain to the Night Watch. How the Night Watch needs all sorts of people just as Maester Aemon’s chain needs different kinds of metal...something like that. I liked what he said.
4. Tyrion's story of his first wife was shocking and sad. Do you think she really was a whore or do you think they would do that to her because she was undesirable for a wife of a Lannister? I kept struggling between the two scenarios. I'm guessing she was hired.
Either way, I wouldn’t put it past Tyrion’s family to do that to him. It was such an awful, sad story, but I think it makes you understand Tyrion a little better.
5. Tyrion is as smart as a whip. Did you think he'd be able to talk his way out of being enslaved? I guess he knows what drives people, but you also have to have some finesse in order to accomplish a change in thought.
I think Tyrion’s proved himself to be pretty clever (although he puts his foot in his mouth quite a bit, doesn’t he?). I find him one of the most entertaining characters, personally. His thoughts are pretty funny.

Are you all planning on doing a buddy read of the second one?

1) Were you caught up in Old Nan’s story about the last hero? Do you think there are still children of the haunted forest in the far North? How do you think Old Nan’s version of story ends; happy like Bran believes?
I thought Nan's story was very interesting and it reminds me of stories my grandmother used to tell me. I think that it is a possibility that their are still children of the haunted forest in the far North, how else would that old guy Gared at the beginning of the story get back? He was near the other two that died, wouldn't the others have gotten him too? I would hope the story has a happy ending.
2) Why do you think Tyrion designed the saddle for Bran? Does his doing so assure you that he had nothing to do with the attempted assignation on Bran?
I don't think it assures me, but it does make me like Tyrion and not want him to be evil. I thought it was a kind gesture that he did so that Bran doesn't have to feel left out like he did as a child.
3) Why did the direwolves respond to Tyrion with such hostility? Summer was the first to start growling; what is the significance of that? Did this change your mind about Tyrion’s ulterior motives?
I didn't know what to think about that other than the fact that he is a Lannister and maybe the wolves know the family is evil. I was upset that this seemed to foreshadow that Tyrion was not a good guy.
4) Any doubt as to which Robert was Jon Arryn was asking for on his death bed? Do you think he was poisoned, and if so, by whom? If it was by Queen Cersei, why did she leave the castle instead of assuring the deed was done and/or no information passed from Lord Arryn to the King Robert?
I am still puzzled by the whole death of Jon Arryn simple because of the new information we are finding out as Eddard does his investigating. I think he was poisoned by someone in the Lannister family but I am not sure if it was the Queen or her brother. I think Queen Cersei is a very self assured woman and doesn't feel the need to double check her handy work.
5) What did you make of Sansa & Arya’s dreams of Bran?
I think it signified that they knew he was waking up. I don't know what else it could have signified.
6) What was your first impression of Samwell Tarly; did it change any after hearing his life story? Did you agree with Jon’s thought that “it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice”? What was the meaning of Jon’s dream of Winterfall?
I liked Samwell instantly and I just felt sorry for him the more we heard about his life story. I was so proud of Jon and his friends for standing up for him. I agree with Jon's thought it does take a lot of courage to admit that you are scared of something. Many people don't tell you if that is the case. I am not sure what Jon's dream meant.
7) Were you surprised Jon had Ghost partaken in straightening Rast out by leaping onto his chest? “Remember, we know where you sleep.” Impressed he used that variation on Donal Noye's words of advice? How close a bond has been formed between all these youths of the Night’s Guard?
I think that Jon is very intelligent. I was not surprised at all that Jon would use Ghost to his advantage. I think that all of the boys of the guard are forming a strong relationship and that they will need it in the books to come.
8) What will be the consequences of Lord Stark giving up some of his own household guard to serve the Watch?
I think he is going to be more vulnerable. I worry what may happen to him now that he has fewer people to gaurd him.
9) Who holds a vital piece of the puzzle for Lord Stark: Ser Hugh (formally Lord Arryn’s squire) or Lord Stannis (the king’s brother)? Who is more likely to part with this information?
I bet Lord Stannis holds more information, but I don't think he will readily part with it. I think the Squire will hold information but not the kind that will be as much help.
10) What is the significance of the lineage book Lord Arryn was reading?
I think it must have something to do with the boy that they went and visited at the armory, but I am not sure how.
11) I can’t write better questions than what we ended with: “What had Jon Arryn wanted with a king’s bastard, and why was it worth his life?” Well, except to ask, which king’s bastard? (I mean which king, Robert?)
I was wondering if it was Robert myself. That seems a bit too obvious though. I am really wondering about this one.

No worries, Tasheana! Hope things settle down for you. This month has been busier for me, too.

2) Seems like Sansa has fully succumb to revisionist history and also a bit of arrogance. Do you think she will make a good queen? What did you think of her dreaming of Lady.
I think she’s very naive. Let’s not forget that she’s incredibly young, and Arya is very smart for her age. Most girls are like Sansa, and have been brought up to be genteel ladies. She’s also been blinded by her feelings for Joffrey, and I don’t think you can fault her for it. I was the same at that age. I think it’s understandable that she resents Arya for “ruining everything,” in her opinion. I think for Sansa to make a good queen, she’d need to grow up some and begin to think for herself.
4) Where you surprised Lord Stark desired to confront Queen Cersei with her sins b/f speaking with King Robert? What of his choice of location; did that have any impact on her speaking the truth? It didn’t seem to affect her propositioning him. Comments.
If it had been me, I would have been afraid to confront Cersei with the truth before speaking with King Robert. I understand why he did, though, as I think he wanted to see for himself what she’d say, there in front of the gods. Knowing the kind of man Ned is, his choice of location made sense, but I think she would have told him the truth anyway.
5) Did the horse heart eating gross you out as much as it did me (which was a lot!)? Were you ever in doubt of her keeping it down? Does the dosh khaleen’s prophesy reassure you of the safety of Dany’s baby? Were you surprise that Dany and Drogo made love in front of witnesses? Does this make her more Dothraki?
SO GROSS. Of course, I knew it was coming, and seeing it on the TV show was even grosser, but reading it was pretty disgusting, too. She’s becoming a really strong-willed character, so it makes sense that she’d keep it all down. It's official - I could never be a khaleesi.
6) Were you worried about Dany and her baby when Viserys threatened her with his sword? Were you surprised with his "crown of gold"?
What a shocking moment, when Drogo pours it all on his head. I can’t say I was sad to see Viserys go, but what a way to die... And I think it shows how far Dany has come that she didn’t look away. I wasn’t afraid for Dany, as her people were around her, and they would protect her, even if they could not spill blood.
9) Do you think Ned should have told Robert about the parentage of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen? Do you think his decision a wise one?
I struggled with this one. I mean, you don’t want him to die with such a burden on his heart. I think I would have done what Ned did. The question is...what now? What will he do with the truth now?

1. What did you think of Catelyn this time around? Do you think she did the right thing or should she have talked to Tyrion before having him taken into custody?
I think she jumped to conclusions. Everyone has a right to say their piece before being judged and I am surprised she was so trusting of Littlefinger. Earlier it sounded like he was slimy and she didn't trust him and then all of a sudden she changed her mind.
2. Do you believe Tyrion about never betting against his family? Did your opinion of him change? Do you believe him?
It didn't change my opinion of him. I think he just knows how ruthless his family is and that they will always do their best to win. I believe him about not trying to kill Bran, he had the perfect opportunity to when he was there earlier.
3. Did what Tyrion say make you think less of Littlefinger?
I already didn't like him, but no.
4. Sansa looks like Catelyn did when she was younger. She was receiving a lot of attention. Do you think Littlefinger would ever do anything to her? His attention seemed a little creepy to me. Anyone else think so too?
I thought his attention seemed creepy. I think that he would if he didn't fear what would happen to him.
5. Did you think Prince Joeffrey would escort Sansa to her room? Do you think her opinion of him changed any because he didn't?
I thought he was going to try something with her when he offered to escort her. When the Hound did it instead, I was surprised. I didn't like him in the beginning and I like him even less now. I hope that her opinion of him changed a great deal, but Sansa seems too much like her mother.
6. Why do you think the Queen was so upset? Is it because she likes to be the center of attention? Started picturing Snow White's step mother. I got a "Mirror, Mirror on the wall...." vibe.
I think she was playing a part. I don't think she was really as upset as she made out to be. Although, I think she does like to be the center of attention.
7. Did you get a little nervous about Sansa being along with the Hound?
I did at first, but now I am not so sure that he is one they need to watch out for.
8. What did you think of The Hound's story about Ser Gregor?
I was appalled. I couldn't believe someone would be that evil to their own brother. Especially over something so trivial as a toy.
9. Did you suspect the young knight that died would be the one Eddard wished to speak to?
I had no idea. I felt like I was blindsided by a Mack truck. It seemed weird that they didn't find him until after he was already dead.
10. If Littlefinger is lying do you think Eddard's in more trouble than you previously thought?
I think he is in a ton of trouble, but it sounds like he may have some allies.
11. Varys' information was interesting. What do you think Ned will do with the information? Sounds like someone may be trying to kill the King. Anyone else wonder why after the King spilled his wine they were so insistent he have more? Could someone be trying to poison him or am I just getting a little wild with my thoughts?
I wasn't surprised bu Vary's information at all. I actually had the thought that someone would kill Robert at the Tournament myself. I don't know about trying to kill him with poison, I think that would seem a bit suspicious considering how Jon Arryn died. I think it would make people wonder.
12. Do you think Catelyn is more likely to listen to Tyrion since he saved her?
I doubt it. She seems pretty stubborn.

1. Found all of Ayra's training to be interesting and fun. Were you surprised her father did not believe what she heard even after he found out Daenery's was pregnant?
I don't think Ned realized that Arya was talking about Daenery's. I don't think he figured that out until the council when Robert was having his fit. I like the part about Arya's training too. I think she is one of the most interesting and likeable characters in the book.
2. Who do you think the two men were? I thought the one might be the Hound and the other might be Tywin, the Queen's father. He's still alive, right?
I agree with you about the Hound, although, I found myself wishing it wasn't him. I don't know about the other one. I think that he is someone that is close to the Dothrakis. How else would he have found out that Dany is pregnant?
3. Did you agree with Eddard declining the office of the King's Hand?
Yes, although I think this might mean more trouble than he had before.
4. Do you think Catelyn was wrong for going to see her sister? Why do you think she didn't travel back the same way she came?
I think it was clear that she was worried if she went the other way that the Lannisters would catch her. I think she did the only thing that she could do given the circumstances, but her sister is freaking crazy! I mean breastfeeding a kid who is 8-9? What in the world!
5. What is with going to see all the King's illegitimate children? I still can't figure this one out. Though I'm disliking Robert more and more.
I am confused by all the illegitimate children too. I don't know why they would have been important and why someone would kill because of them. I really dislike Robert, he needs to be dethroned.
6. Gah! More death. Were you surprised that Jamie didn't kill Eddard? I think we'll see a lot more bloodshed before the book is done.
I was surprised that he didn't kill Eddard, but I guess Eddard is one of the main characters. I was so sad when Jory died and the scene of Ned holding him in his arms was so touching.

1 - I love Arya, too! I wish we had more chapters from her point of view.
4 - I know! How disturbing is that? I can't believe all the people around her have allowed it to go on. Ick.

1. How's your perception of Dothrakis? What do you think of them as a civilization?
I think they are a very interesting group of people. It sounds like even though they fight with each other, respect is a big deal to them. They also seem to be big on subserviant women, which I don't like, but it is part of the time back then.
2. Do you think Robb is correct in agreeing with Greyjoy's decision to call the banners? Do you think the Starks (well, some of them) can trust Greyjoy?
No, I think he should take the advice of Bran and listen to his father's advisors. I am beginning to wonder about Greyjoy. I have my suspicions that he is not a good fellow.
3. Did the men have some reason in coming so close to Winterfell?
I wondered that myself. I am sure that they know the Lord of the house is gone. I wondered if they meant to try and loot the Winterfell.
4. With all the events that are taking place now, do you agree that Catelyn was wrong in going to Lysa place?
I think that Catelyn makes a lot of decisions because she is forced to and I don't think that they are decisions that turn out well for her.
5. Tyrion took a very bold chance. What do you think he was trying to achieve?
Obviously he was tired of being held a prisoner. I am sure being in a cell like the one he was in could make you crazy. I also think that he is betting on winning the fight and being released.
6. Bah, Robert is soo not on my like-list. Now he wants Ned back as the Hand. What do you think of this?
I think that Robert is spine-less and that because he is miserable, he wants Ned to be miserable as well. He likes power but he doesn't know how to manage that power in the proper ways and I think he knows that. I don't like him either.

1) Did you expect Jon to keep his role in Samwell’s assignment a secret?
Yes, it makes sense that he did. He is a good friend to Sam and didn’t help him for selfish reasons.
3) If the the reason behind Mormont assigning him to the stewards was as Samwell stated, why was Ser Alliser smiling?
Perhaps because he knew how much Jon wanted to be a ranger.
4) Do you feel Lord Stark should have said something about Prince Joffrey’s paternity when he called the small council together?
In hindsight, yes. But he couldn’t have known how things would go down when he was called in to see Joffrey and Cersei.
7) Sansa! Will she ever get a clue? Can you see her parroting reflected in what other courtiers say in from of Queen Cersei? Where you as appalled as I was that she had revealed their planned departure to Queen Cersei?
I didn’t even know that she had revealed their departure! This was not in the TV series (or if it was, I don't remember it). Arghh Sansa. She definitely needs to open her eyes and see what is happening around her.

1. I now suspect Littlefinger is one of the men Ayra saw talking in the secret passage of the castle. His beard is pointy, and they talked about him having rings (page 440). Anyone else think so? Still unsure of his motives. Tyrion did say Littlefinger was out for Littlefinger. Maybe it's all for personal gain? Any thoughts?
I think he was one of the ones I originally though of. He is definitely very sneaky and the type of person who would do something just for his own personal gain. That and the physical evidence leads me to believe that he was one of the people Arya heard.
2. I agree that Lysa is a bad influence on her son and he should be fostered. She seems slightly unbalanced. Anyone agree or disagree? She seems consumed by hate. I'm suspecting something more happened than just her husband being poisoned. Any ideas?
She is very unbalanced in my opinion and you can already see signs of her child being just as unbalanced as she is. I agree, I think there is a lot more to the story of what happened to Lysa's husband. I am just not sure exactly what that would be.
3. Loved that Jon tried to convince them to use Sam in another capacity and stop the torture of his training. Do you think they'll take his advice? I kept hoping he'd go home.
I really really like Jon. I think he and Arya are my two favorite characters so far. I hope they take his advice and that Sam is given some sort of job. As for Sam going home, he doesn't have that option. His father told him he would kill him if he ever tried to come back.
4. Tyrion's story of his first wife was shocking and sad. Do you think she really was a whore or do you think they would do that to her because she was undesirable for a wife of a Lannister? I kept struggling between the two scenarios. I'm guessing she was hired.
The fact that they would stoop so low as to do either of these things to him makes me wonder about what else they have done to Tyrion. I am surprised that he relies on his family so much. It doesn't sound like they are very nice to him.
5. Tyrion is as smart as a whip. Did you think he'd be able to talk his way out of being enslaved? I guess he knows what drives people, but you also have to have some finesse in order to accomplish a change in thought.
I knew he wouldn't die, I just didn't think it would work out the way it did. I think he is very smart because he has to be. Growing up a Lannister and being treated by his family the way they treat him, I am not surprised that he would be so intelligent and tough. I think he has had years watching people and has used what he has learned to his advantage.
6. I guess a medieval type tale isn't complete unless the villagers are pillaged? What do you think about all the chaos associate with the Lannisters? Do you believe it is the dastardly deeds of Jamie and his Motley crew?
Yes I do. Eddard seems to have an idea of what the Lannisters are up to. I think that it just goes with the unrest of the book. I think most of the medieval times have political unrest in them. Laws were not as stringent or as easily kept as they are today.

1) Does Septa Mordane have reason to be upset that Lord Baelish/Littlefinger overheard what Sansa said her father’s decision regarding Ser Loras? (BTW, I think Lisarenee is right; he’s a little creepy now, stoking her face like that; do you? Though I did like what he said, “Life in not a song, sweetling.”) Comments.
It seems like there are multiple people with pointy beards and so many corrupt, evil people that I don't know what to think anymore. If I was Septa Mordane, I would be more worried that Littlefinger would use Sansa's feelings to turn her against her father. He seems like the type of person who would be sneaky like that. Sansa gets on my nerves. I can't stand how she acts.
2) Seems like Sansa has fully succumb to revisionist history and also a bit of arrogance. Do you think she will make a good queen? What did you think of her dreaming of Lady.
I think she would make an awful queen. She is way too arrogant for her own good. I think she would turn out much like Cersei is now, unless her father can get a hold of her and change her beliefs.
3) Interesting that Sansa brought clarity to Lord Stark by seeing Prince Joffrey by his true sigil. Still, now that her direwolf is dead, do you see her as more than just an observer? Or just someone unprotected?
I think she is more than just an observer, but I don't think she is going to be acting like a Stark. I think that her direwolf dying is showing that she is going to turn her back on the Starks. I could be wrong, but that is what I think.
4) Where you surprised Lord Stark desired to confront Queen Cersei with her sins b/f speaking with King Robert? What of his choice of location; did that have any impact on her speaking the truth? It didn’t seem to affect her propositioning him. Comments.
I couldn't believe that he would risk confronting her before Robert came back. Cersei seems evil and I would think that she would try to stop him in anyway possible from revealing the truth. I don't know if where they met had any impact on Cersei, other than the fact that they were far away from everyone.
I was soooo grossed out. I mean, eating a horse's heart. RAW! UGH! I wasn't worried about the safety of the baby so much as, how do they know it is going to be a boy? What if its a girl? I was shocked that they made love in front of a ton of witnesses and I do think Dani has embraced the Dothraki way of life.
6) Were you worried about Dany and her baby when Viserys threatened her with his sword? Were you surprised with his "crown of gold"?
I was worried about Dany and her baby because he seemed so crazy. I am surprised that they haven't killed him already and no I wasn't surprised by his crown of gold. Khal Drogo doesn't seem like the type to let anyone get away with demanding he do something or treating his wife the way Viserys did.
7) Oh, man! I thought when Lyanna was saying “Promise me, Ned,” in his dream we were finally going to get a few answers or clues as to Jon Snow’s paternity. Where are you on this speculation?
I am confused as to what this has to do with Jon's paternity? I thought we were just going to get more answers as to what happened to Lyanna in general. Or what Ned promised her.
8) What were your observations and conclusions about King Robert's fight with the boar?
I am not surprised that he is dying due to his own foolishness. Robert was not very smart and very arrogant. I think this was his downfall.
9) Do you think Ned should have told Robert about the parentage of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen? Do you think his decision a wise one?
I think he made the right choice. I am not sure that King Robert would have believed Ned. He might not even have cared. The only way for Ned to have insured that Joffrey didn't come to reign was to hide it from Robert and change the wording of the official document. Not to mention it might have hurt Robert in his dying moments.
10) Do you think Ned’s letter will reach Lord Stannis? Is so, any idea what will happen?
I think it will reach him, its the reaction that I think we will all be surprised with.
11) What do you think of Litterfinger’s advice? Does this make you doubt it was him that Arya overheard? Was he just testing Lord Stark’s resolve? Or is he just keeping his finger in every pie and/or stirring the soup with it?
I think Littlefinger has an ulterior motive. I see him as keeping his finger in every pie and stirring the soup with it. He is sneaky and I wouldn't trust him.

1) Did you expect Jon to keep his role in Samwell’s assignment a secret?
I hoped he would. I think Sam would have been upset if he had know that Jon had to go to bat for him. Not only does it make me like Jon's character even more, I am glad that he is willing to fight for his friends.
2) Do you think Samwell’s taking his vows with Jon before the heart tree will strengthen their friendship?
I hope it does. I think Samwell will be a good and wise friend for Jon.
3) If the the reason behind Mormont assigning him to the stewards was as Samwell stated, why was Ser Alliser smiling?
I think Ser Alliser isn't very smart, maybe he thought he had won. I think he doesn't think too highly of Jon's intelligence level. I also think people like Ser Alliser never see the truth of things, they only see what they want to see.
4) Do you feel Lord Stark should have said something about Prince Joffrey’s paternity when he called the small council together?
I think he was being cautious. I think he didn't know who to trust and rightly so. I don't think telling anyone would have changed the outcome of what happened.
5) Ohhhhh…Litterfinger is truly a viperous snake! Did this surprise you? What are your thoughts about Janos Slynt? Will there be repercussions for Ser Barristan, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, for his slight hesitation?
I wasn't surprised by Littlefinger at all. It was obvious since he was first introduced that he has no love for the Starks. I think that there will be all kinds of repercussions for everyone involved. I just don't know what they might be. Even Littlefinger and Cersei will rue the day they messed with the Starks. I have a feeling in the end they will come up on top.
6) Did Arya learn enough from Syrio to survive and make it back to Winterfell? Will she be reunited with her direwolf on the way home?
I think she did. I think a lot of getting back to Winterfell will be luck, but I think she will be reunited with ehr direwolf and that she will make it back.... eventually.
7) Sansa! Will she ever get a clue? Can you see her parroting reflected in what other courtiers say in from of Queen Cersei? Where you as appalled as I was that she had revealed their planned departure to Queen Cersei?
I have come to expect this sort of behavior from Sansa. I will continue to say it, she is the one that is going to end up becoming a Lannister and betraying her family. I don't think she will ever recover from this.

1. Did anyone expect the dead men to come back to life? I did. Does that mean I've seen too many horror movies?
I didn't expect them to come back to life at all. Are they the others? I thought they were described as white creatures that are somewhat invisible until they want you to see them but I am not sure now.
2. What did you think the hand going down the throat was looking for - soul or heart? CREEPY!
I am thinking it was going for the heart which most people think contains the soul. Then again it could have just been trying to suffocate and kill him.
4. Did they say if anyone besides Jon survived? There was another zombie that he didn't deal with. Wonder what happened to him...but do I really want to know???????
It didn't say. I would find it hard to believe that all of the other men died from two walking dead men. We do know that the Maestor is still alive. I am assuming that the other dead guy is walking around wreaking havoc until someone figured out how to stop him.
3. Was anyone surprised that so much time had passed? I didn't think it'd been a full year.
I was a bit shocked. It seems like this book is skipping over the boring bits that happen in life and is just giving us the action. It makes more sense than everything happening in the course of several weeks.
4. Anyone else thinking Catelyn is a bad mom? Why is she not going home to her two youngest kids? I understand her brother's in trouble and her father is dying, but she has kids. I can't fathom being away from my kids that long.
I was a bit surprised. I can't understand why anyone would leave Bran and Rickon, who are both so young unattended. I think that Catelyn worries about everything but her kids which is weird to me.
5. Interesting that Rob's first reaction to Sansa's letter was "What's wrong with that girl." and not "They must have forced her to write this." What do you think?
I have said all along that Sansa has the makings for a traitor. She is also very snobish and worried about appearances. I think her family knows her very well, or at least the children do. Even if she was somewhat forced to write the letter, it didn't take much coercing to get her to do it.
6. Bran's statement about Sansa loosing her Wolf makes me wonder how close those wolves are tied to the children. Seems like there could be another story just about that.
I am pretty sure they are very important to the story and we will find out more about them later. I am was surprised that Bran even made the connection though between that and how Sansa is acting.
7. Speaking of Bran, I feel so bad he can't be healed. I kept hoping he could. He's struggling so much with what he can do and what he would have been able to do. Any thoughts?
I am wondering if we have seen the end of his healing yet? I am thinking maybe it is just going to be an extremely long recovery. I could be wrong though. I feel bad for him as well and I hope that he finds some peace with it. I am glad that he is strong enough to not let all the barbs upset him too much.
8. Looks like raising the banners was a good choice on Robb's part. I still don't like him going to war.
I think whether or not it was a good decision remains to be seen. I am reserving judgement until we find out what happens with it.
9. So there is a dilemma is getting the father more important than trying to defeat the Others. Which do you think they should have done first?
I don't think they even realize that the Others are a threat. I understand their reluctance to believe Osha, I mean she did try to steal and kill Bran. I think that they also have never experienced a winter so they have no idea what is in store for them. I think they should have gone after the Others, but that is only because I know about the coming doom from inferencing it from the book.
10. Dany and her husband were almost poisoned. Did you think it odd that Ser Jorah thought the wine was tainted? Could he have set it up to persuade Kahl Drago to wage war on the Seven Kingdoms?
I thought about that too, but he seems pretty happy living the life in Dothraki. I am not sure that he would go through all of that trouble.
11. Do you think that Dany and the Starks might become allies?
I kind of hope so.

1. We now know that the mantra of the Lannisters is "Hear Me Roar." What is your opinion of it? I think it is not all that inventive or great.
I think its kind of lame, but also speaks of their self importance. It is an obvious mantra for people that want everyone to know who they are, and what they are all about. It also speaks of their belief that they can out power anyone.
2. Tyrion is finally back home. What did you think of the interaction between him and his father? I'm not feeling the love.
It is obvious that Tyrion hates his father and that his father doesn't really like him all that much either. I am not sure whether that means that Tyrion could become an ally to the Starks, or at least not be willing to harm them. It does however sound like Lysa is about to get a rude awakeing.
3. Anyone wondering how Tyrion's newly formed motley crew will effect the games (game of thrones that is), or do you think Tyrion's father will kill them? Could insisting that Tyrion was theirs until they were compensated lead to their downfall?
I think that his father doesn't really care so much about what happens with them as long as they are not causing harm to his assault on the lands. I am thinking however that this may not go well for Tyrion. I think that he is going to have a lot of fighting amongst his crew of men.
4. Bronn saved Tyrion's butt, but it sounded like Tyrion didn't have a high regard for him. He brought up the fact he'd changed sides. Anyone surprised by this?
Well its obvious from previous chapters that Bronn doesn't really have a fondness for anyone. He had already told Tyrion he only did what was best for himself. I am not surprised that he has betrayed others and that he changes the side he is on right and left. He has no allegiance.
5. Sansa. What can I say? Anyone else like to smack some sense into her? Anyone else surprised she is still considered engaged to the young King? Do you think he likes her? I was a little confused by it until I read Eddard's chapter.
I don't think the Prince really likes her. I think they are all just placating her to try and manipulate her family. I personally don't like Sansa at all. I think she is an annoying little twit. I am wondering how the future will play out for her.
6. I must confess, I was a little afraid to read chapter 58. I didn't see any other Eddard chapters. I feared our relationship with him had come to an end. Anyone else relieved it wasn't? Do you think he'll cave in because of Sansa?
I was worried about it too. I went and looked ahead to see if he was still in the book. :) I think he will cave because it will be the only thing that may save the realm. I think Sansa may have something to do with it.
7. So as I and I believe a few others of you suspected, Catelyn didn't fully believe herself a Stark. I'd think that after 5 children and several more years of being married to her husband she'd have felt she was a Stark. Anyone else think she really had a problem with her husband's infidelity? Could that be the reason?
I am sure that the belief that her husband was unfaithful to her played a large part. I also think it has to do with the different way of life that Southerners and Northerners obviously have.
8. What did you think of the agreement Catelyn reached with Lord Frey? That was an awful lot to ask for passage.
I think that she did what she believed that she had to do. Something tells me that it may not matter later on down the road. It was done all the time back then so I am sure it will all work out.

1) Uncle Benjen is still missing; what are the odds that he’s going to come back as a Zombie Leader and fight Jon Snow? Or am I totally barking up the wrong tree here?
I doubt that that is going to happen, but I could be wrong. I am not sure I even believe he is dead.
2) Something more than WOW! for the end of Chapter 60? Was it the biggest surprise of the story for you? If not, state your biggest surprise thus far.
It was a big surprise. I would definitely say the biggest surprise for me. Did you also notice that the Jorah Mormount that is with Dani is the son of the Lord Mormount of the black? Or at least I am pretty sure that is the case.
3) Let us say, for the purpose of this question, our suspicions about Jon Snow being the love child of Rhaegar and Lyanna are correct (of course, if they married, then he’s a Prince, right?). Question: Having read the Old Bear’s reveal, what do you make of him gifting Jon with Longclaw?
The only problem I have with Jon Snow being the love child of Rhaegar and Lyanna is why every time Ned thinks about him he feels ashamed. Why would he be ashamed if Jon isn't his child? As far as the Old Bear giving Jon his sword, I think it was very fitting and I kind of like the old man.
4) Daenerys has no stomach for rape or slavery. When Ser Jorah tells Dany she is like her oldest brother, Rhaegar, we get a completely different picture of him. Comments on either of these statements?
I am thinking Rhaegar must not have been as bad a man as we have been lead to believe.
5) First impressions on Mirri Maz Duur? Do you think there will be consequences to their burning the temple?
I am thinking that she may become a key character in Dani's story. I am not sure how or what she will become to her but it will be interesting. I don't think they have burned the temple yet. However, if they do burn the temple, I am sure nothing good will come of it.
6) What do you think of Lord Tywin placing Tyrion and his wild “motley crew” in the vanguard? Do you believe Tyrion knows exactly what his father is doing? Do you think that there are limits on what a person can forgive?
I think that his father wants to be rid of Tyrion. Maybe he knows that Tyrion is not as loyal as he may seem? I think Tyrion is well aware of the games his father plays. I don't think that there is a limit on forgiveness as I am a Christian. God can help you do forgive anything. However, I do think that in this instance Tyrion is already past the point of forgiving his father.
7) Was Tyrion’s defeat of the knight intelligence or luck? Were these battle scenes either too long or too graphic for you or where you too caught up in the telling to notice?
I think it was luck. Tyrion is very smart but it was obvious that smarts as well as strength was needed in that fight. I was caught up in what was going on. It was interesting to read what was going on, however, I am glad the entire book has not been about the battles.
8) Were you impressed that Lord Robb Stark was more cautious than Lord Tywin expected?
I thought it was kind of funny. He apparently shows his weakness in that he thinks less of everyone that he deems not as smart or as awesome as himself. I am thinking that this will eventually be his downfall.
9) What are the Starks are going to do with Jaime? Surely not let this Lannister brother go as easily as the first.
I think they are going to use him to get their relatives released. I am not sure how successful they will be, but I hope that things go their way.
10) Any change from your initial impression of Theon Greyjoy? Quote: “And Lord Tywin?” Catelyn interrupted. “Have you perchance taken Lord Tywin, Theon?” Catelyn asks an eloquent question of him. How is his arrogance different from Jamie’s?
Greyjoy is very arrogant and at times gets on my nerves. I think the difference between him and Jaime is that he seems to be willing to listen to others and change his thoughts. Jaime on the other hand seems to not care and still thinks that he is the smartest man around.

Lisarenee's Questions for Chapter 52 (Jon) - Chapter 55 (Catelyn)
1. Did anyone expect the dead men to come back to life? I did. Does that mean I've seen too many horror movies?
That was so creepy! I’m glad we are starting to see some of this white walker/Other stuff, though. It’s getting pretty scary!
2. What did you think the hand going down the throat was looking for - soul or heart? CREEPY!
Perhaps the heart? Or, like Laura, said, he was just trying to kill him by suffocation.
3. Was anyone surprised that so much time had passed? I didn't think it'd been a full year.
It doesn’t feel like it, does it?
4. Anyone else thinking Catelyn is a bad mom? Why is she not going home to her two youngest kids? I understand her brother's in trouble and her father is dying, but she has kids. I can't fathom being away from my kids that long.
Either way, she is abandoning someone. And I think she feels like her kids are being well cared for in Winterfell. I don’t know that I could stay away from home for so long like that, though.
6. Bran's statement about Sansa loosing her Wolf makes me wonder how close those wolves are tied to the children. Seems like there could be another story just about that.
I agree with Laura that they are very important to the Stark children. Very interesting that Bran would make that observation.
7. Speaking of Bran, I feel so bad he can't be healed. I kept hoping he could. He's struggling so much with what he can do and what he would have been able to do. Any thoughts?
Oh, Bran. How sad for someone who enjoys climbing to have that taken away in such a terrible way. I think right now he is focusing on how much he wants to be a knight and how much it hurts that he can’t be one, but he will someday find something that he can do that he will enjoy.
8. Looks like raising the banners was a good choice on Robb's part. I still don't like him going to war.
All I can think of are the fifteen-year-old boys that I know - how young and immature they are compared to how Robb seems. I like that he is strong enough to lead all of those men, but he is still very young.
9. So there is a dilemma is getting the father more important than trying to defeat the Others. Which do you think they should have done first?
Well, obviously everyone needs to be aware of the threat of the Others and the fact that “winter is coming.” They need to be focused on the North, and not the petty squabbles over who sits on the throne in the South. But nobody seems to care about winter or the Others, so it’s not much of a dilemma.

1. Wow! So much going on. Do you think Daenerys' husband will survive and if so will he still be human? This whole blood magic sounds a little scary. I can't believe so much could happen in one Chapter.
I was appalled that Daenerys would even try something like that. Apparently she loves Khal Drogo a lot more than I thought she did. I think he will live but something tells me that her son is going to die in child birth.
2. Eddard did die after securing his daughter's place. I frankly, wouldn't have believed they would have kept her safe. I figured once he was gone she would be exterminated (Sorry Doctor Who going on in the background). What did you think? Surprised she's still engaged? (I sound like a broken record, huh?)
I am sure they are keeping her around to get to her mother. I also think it gives Joffrey some sort of sick pleasure. Its obvious that he is even more demented and crazy than his mother ever thought of being. It doesn't sound like he really cares about anyone but himself.
3. Sansa finally gets it, and you called it Lisa Kay, she's getting smacked around. Anyone surprised? Apparently Joffrey sees heads as appropriate tokens of affection - how romantic NOT!
I am not surprised by this at all. I mean she kind of asked for it when she treated her family so crappily just so she could some day be Queen. Do I think she deserves all of this. No she is just a child with a lot of growing up to do, no matter how annoying I found her character to be.
4. Has anyone taken notice of all the Sigils being presented? There are unicorns, bears, fish, lions, deer, wolves, golden roses, Falcons, dragons, kraken, etc Which would you want for your Sigil? Which is the least appealing? Which would you like to see come to life in the book? I hope this mean more of the sigils will come to life in the book. I want to see kraken and unicorns.
I think I personally like the dragon sigil. Only because I have always been interested in them. They are strong, and beautiful. I would love to see those eggs that Dany has hatch. It would be awesome. Throwing in some unicorns might be cool as well.
5. Okay not that I've taken a slight road trip I'll get back on track. Ayra has been surviving on the streets around the castle. Do you think Yoren from the wall will harm her? He seemed a little rough with her.
I think he is going to help her. I think he was rough with her because he needed her to understand that he meant business. If anyone had heard her the would have become suspicious and I don't think that Joffrey would have kept her alive had she been taken in.
6. Anyone else think they'd find something on Jon's parentage in the family crypts? Were we totally wrong?
I don't think we are ever going to truly know what his lineage is. Ned is dead and I think he was the only person who truly knew what Jon's parentage was. Unless Dany knows?
7. Osha looks like she may play a more key role than I previously would have thought. Anyone else surprised?
I was a bit surprised that she kept popping up. I think she is going to play an even bigger role in the second book.

Oh, My Gah! Sooooo much happened at the end. Must get next book NOW!
1) You called it Lisa Kay there were repercussions from burning down the temple. Mirri Maz Duur was a witch to do that to Dany. Dany tried to help in the only way she could and Mirri Maz Duur took everything away. Did you expect her to kill Dany's baby? I kind of wondered if that was the life she was referring to when she said there had to be a blood sacrifice. I kept hoping he was still alive. That maybe she just took him like Rumplestilskin wanted the princess' baby. Dang!
I knew the baby was going to die. It was the logical plot line to take. What I was surprised with was the fact that the Khal ended up the way he was. I figured he was going to come back fully but instead be a horrible man and not love Dany anymore. I was completely wrong on that front. I was so angry with the witch woman. Now Dany seems to be a bit crazy.
2) What did you think of the dragons suckling off Dany and her being unscathed by the fire? Why do you think her brother wasn't immune to the fire?
It was weird and gross. I think her being immune to the fire is a symbol that she is the true heir of the Dragons. I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing. It almost sounds like she is going to be a looney tunes person. I am worried that the experiences she has had recently has made her crazy. I would hope not though. I always thought the reason her brother was not the true king was because he was a horrible person.
3) They want Robb to be king. Did you see that one coming? I still mourn for Eddard. *sniff* I still like Jon more than Robb.
I like Jon more than Robb too. I am surprised that they want Robb to be king. He is so young and really not ready for so much responsibility. No matter how mature he may seem, he is still not a man yet. I think it will end up biting them in the butt later on.
4) There appears to be no going back for Jon. He either stays at the wall or he dies. Anyone else disliking that? The way the Old Bear talked I thought there were times when they could leave.
I think it is silly to think that the only way to have an effective watch is to have men who forsake family and friends for the wall. It irks me that they hold on to this belief so strongly. I know the reasoning behind it but I think they would have more loyalty if they did it a different way. It is very annoying.
5) Out of curiosity, those of you of the *cough* "weaker" *cough* sex like me, would you have sided with the peace that Catelyn proposed or are you of the "off with their heads" crew? Okay, I'm somewhere in between.
I see both sides of the coin so to speak. I do however think that the peace would be fleeting. People like the Lannisters would end up just turning around and stabbing everyone in the back if they try to make a peace. They would be too afraid of rebellion later on. They like to rule with an iron fist. I think I would have to go with imprisonment forever with no option of getting out.
6) Tyrion finally is acknowledged by his father as his son. Jamie is being talked poorly of. The Lannister family secret (all of Cersei's children being Jamie's) has still yet to be revealed. Were any of these things surprising? How do you think Tyrion will act. What do you think of his thought of taking his whore (why do I always feel bad using that word?) with him? Do we know how old he is? I kept thinking it would be ironic if the "whore" turned out to be that long lost wife of his, but I don't think that would be possible. I'm guessing that happened a very long time ago and he'd recognize her.
I am hoping that Tyrion is still a good person and will rise above the other Lannisters, but his defense of Jaime is making me have my doubts. I don't think any of the events that have happened so far have really been surprising to me. The small details are what has been so surprising. I doubt the prostitute is Tyrion's wife but I am hoping that it ends up being true love for Tyrion (I still want to like him soooo bad).
7) Thoughts overall on the book? Will you continue with the next book? Anyone up for reading it soon? Any thoughts as to whether we should read the series (as it won as our next series read) like this buddy read - 4 chapters at a time?
I will read the next book but only out of curiosity for what is going to happen. I think the book was a tad too depressing and heavy for me to enjoy it as much as I had hoped. I don't know if I will finish the entire series.
8) A last minute add - Why have we not met Lord Stannis? I kept thinking we'd get to at least meet him in this book. He doesn't seem like he'd be that great of a King.
I can't say what kind of King he would be until we actually meet him. It seems like other characters POV have never been right on with their fellow characters. Hopefully the second book will give us some insight.

1. We now know that the mantra of the Lannisters is "Hear Me Roar." What is your opinion of it? I think it is not all that inventive or great.
It kind of makes sense, with their sigil being a lion, but it is a bit bland.
2. Tyrion is finally back home. What did you think of the interaction between him and his father? I'm not feeling the love.
I find the relationship between Tywin and Tyrion really sad. Especially given some of the stories Tyrion has told about growing up in his family. I think Tyrion has a somewhat healthy perspective on everything, though.
4. Bronn saved Tyrion's butt, but it sounded like Tyrion didn't have a high regard for him. He brought up the fact he'd changed sides. Anyone surprised by this?
I think that Tyrion has learned to view the world in terms of money, so that’s why he sees Bronn as a sellsword, and not as a friend.
5. Sansa. What can I say? Anyone else like to smack some sense into her? Anyone else surprised she is still considered engaged to the young King? Do you think he likes her? I was a little confused by it until I read Eddard's chapter.
Haha, I like what Laura said about Sansa being an “annoying little twit.” I’m hoping that book two will bring about some growth in Sansa and she will learn from all this madness and finally begin to think for herself.
7. So as I and I believe a few others of you suspected, Catelyn didn't fully believe herself a Stark. I'd think that after 5 children and several more years of being married to her husband she'd have felt she was a Stark. Anyone else think she really had a problem with her husband's infidelity? Could that be the reason?
I agree with Laura about Southerners and Northerners...their ways of life seem to be very different from each other. Religious beliefs, food, weather, all of that changed when she moved up North, and that was probably pretty hard on her. I’m sure the infidelity was hard on her, too, though.
8. What did you think of the agreement Catelyn reached with Lord Frey? That was an awful lot to ask for passage.
Oh, jeez. That man was pretty ridiculous. I think that this agreement may be a big issue in one of the later books. I don’t know. Perhaps Robb will refuse to marry Lord Frey’s daughter because he’s found someone else? Or something like that. I could see that happening.
Lisa Kay's Questions for Chapter 60 (Jon) – Chapter 63 (Catelyn)
1) Uncle Benjen is still missing; what are the odds that he’s going to come back as a Zombie Leader and fight Jon Snow? Or am I totally barking up the wrong tree here?
I think he’s still alive, somewhere. I think he will eventually turn up and there will be many stories to tell.
2) Something more than WOW! for the end of Chapter 60? Was it the biggest surprise of the story for you? If not, state your biggest surprise thus far.
Yep, that was a huge surprise! Laura, it took me a while to put two and two together with Ser Jorah and Lord Mormont (in the TV series), but it was such an AHH! moment.
I never even thought about Jon being the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. It doesn’t really make sense to me, though. I really liked Lord Mormont’s gift to Jon. It was probably hard for him to give his son’s sword to someone else other than his son, but very fitting for it to be Jon.
4) Daenerys has no stomach for rape or slavery. When Ser Jorah tells Dany she is like her oldest brother, Rhaegar, we get a completely different picture of him. Comments on either of these statements?
I think what Ser Jorah meant by that comment was that Dany was able to get her way whenever she wanted. Dany did what no other khaleesi should have been able to do. He was comparing her to “the last dragon.”
5) First impressions on Mirri Maz Duur? Do you think there will be consequences to their burning the temple?
My first impression of her was similar to Dany’s first impression. I was glad Dany had saved her and hopeful that her magic would work. I didn’t think to mistrust her.
6) What do you think of Lord Tywin placing Tyrion and his wild “motley crew” in the vanguard? Do you believe Tyrion knows exactly what his father is doing? Do you think that there are limits on what a person can forgive?
I think Tywin wanted an easy way to be free of his son and his son’s savages. Tyrion was definitely aware of that fact, though. No, there are no limits to forgiveness, but Laura is right - I don’t think Tyrion will ever forgive his father.
7) Was Tyrion’s defeat of the knight intelligence or luck? Were these battle scenes either too long or too graphic for you or where you too caught up in the telling to notice?
I thought it was luck as well. I didn’t think the scenes were too long, no. I was pretty caught up in them.
8) Were you impressed that Lord Robb Stark was more cautious than Lord Tywin expected?
Well, he obviously has learned well from his father, something Tywin obviously hasn’t considered. I think that if you’re going to call yourself a great battle commander, you can’t be too proud; you need to assume your enemy is smarter than you and plan accordingly.
9) What are the Starks are going to do with Jaime? Surely not let this Lannister brother go as easily as the first.
Well the first brother was innocent, so we were all sort of hoping he’d be let go... This is the brother that should have been caught from the start. Whatever happens, it’s going to be interesting.
I think he is going to be a bigger character in the coming books. I don’t really have a strong opinion of him at the moment, but I’m interested in how is character is going to turn out.
Questions for Chapter 64 (Daenerys) – Chapter 67 (Sansa)
1. Wow! So much going on. Do you think Daenerys' husband will survive and if so will he still be human? This whole blood magic sounds a little scary. I can't believe so much could happen in one Chapter.
Yeah, I’m with Laura - very surprised Dany would try this. Sounds very creepy.
I don’t think that anyone expected Joffrey to give the order to chop Ned’s head off. I don’t think Joffrey discussed it with Cersei and Petyr Baelish and the rest of his counsel. I think the counsel expected Joffrey to show mercy, in order to appease Robb and his army and prevent war. But Joffrey, being Joffrey, did only what he wanted to, not thinking of the consequences. Now the only way to prevent war is to hold Sansa and either trade hostages or attempt a marriage.
3. Sansa finally gets it, and you called it Lisa Kay, she's getting smacked around. Anyone surprised? Apparently Joffrey sees heads as appropriate tokens of affection - how romantic NOT!
Joffrey is incredibly cruel, and now that he’s king, he gets to act like the spoiled brat he is. What I find most interesting in this section, though, is the interaction between Sansa and the Hound. I’ll be interested to see more of that in book two.
A fish would be pretty unappealing, I think. Heh. A falcon would be cool!
5. Okay not that I've taken a slight road trip I'll get back on track. Ayra has been surviving on the streets around the castle. Do you think Yoren from the wall will harm her? He seemed a little rough with her.
I think he was helping her. I think Arya’s going to be okay. Anxious to find out what happens to her, though!
6. Anyone else think they'd find something on Jon's parentage in the family crypts? Were we totally wrong?
I’m inclined to believe with Laura, that we probably won’t find out his parentage.
7. Osha looks like she may play a more key role than I previously would have thought. Anyone else surprised?
I think she will be bigger in the next book, too. The fact that she was raised north of the Wall will be important, I think.

Dang!
This was so sad. It was just frustrating to read, especially knowing what was going to happen. GAHH.
2) What did you think of the dragons suckling off Dany and her being unscathed by the fire? Why do you think her brother wasn't immune to the fire?
Yeah, it was a little gross, heh. It was also symbolic, though - the dragons belong to her. She owns them completely, as she herself is a “dragon.” Her brother wasn’t a true dragon...he was weak, cowardly.
3) They want Robb to be king. Did you see that one coming? I still mourn for Eddard. *sniff* I still like Jon more than Robb.
They want Robb to be king of the North, not the entire of Westeros. I like Jon more, too, but perhaps that is because we’ve never been inside Robb’s head. He seems so well put-together, so perfect, but is he really? What are his motivations? We don’t know.
4) There appears to be no going back for Jon. He either stays at the wall or he dies. Anyone else disliking that? The way the Old Bear talked I thought there were times when they could leave.
I think there are special circumstances when they get leave to go visit others. Uncle Benjen was allowed to go visit Ned when King Robert came to Winterfell. But leaving to go fight is another matter, especially when the Night Watch has chosen to stay out of the “game of thrones.” I do think that there should be times when men are allowed to leave to go help their family, but there is a fine line to walk, for everyone would want to leave all the time. I don’t know.
5) Out of curiosity, those of you of the *cough* "weaker" *cough* sex like me, would you have sided with the peace that Catelyn proposed or are you of the "off with their heads" crew? Okay, I'm somewhere in between.
Either side has its problems. Like Laura said, peace would be fleeting, especially with Joffrey on the throne. I don’t think I could sit back and watch him ruin the kingdom.
None of those were truly surprising. Tywin only acknowledged Tyrion because Jaime wasn’t around and someone was needed to help Joffrey. I think Tyrion took Shae to court to upset his father. I’m not sure if he would have taken her if Tywin hadn’t said “no,” first. I’m curious about how their relationship will unfold, however.
7) Thoughts overall on the book? Will you continue with the next book? Anyone up for reading it soon? Any thoughts as to whether we should read the series (as it won as our next series read) like this buddy read - 4 chapters at a time?
I agree that it was depressing and very heavy. The past few months have been emotionally hard for me and I’ve had some health problems that have been particularly nasty. It’s been hard to find time to read, and even when I have, it’s been hard just getting through this. It’s such a relief being done! I do want to read the next one, but I’ll need a massive break first, heh. I think I’ll stick to lighter stuff for a while beforehand.
8) A last minute add - Why have we not met Lord Stannis? I kept thinking we'd get to at least meet him in this book. He doesn't seem like he'd be that great of a King.
I think Stannis will be a huge character in book two and I’m looking forward to meeting him. He’s very mysterious, isn’t he?
I think it says that Bran looks the Tully's. If I remember when Arya was talking, she said that she was the only one that looked like a Stark. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure.
