Whoa, why do you want Adam to be so unhappy? I know he is ..."

I think Adam still hankers after Julia really, he's just talked himself into believing he doesn't. With Jenny, and Julia's elderly husband, out of the way, I think they would get it together again. They could have quite an interesting marriage.

Oh, but they wouldn't! That's the whole point of the story! By the end, Adam had come to realise that Julia was a self-absorbed drama queen and Julia had come to realise that Adam wasn't a dashing romantic hero either. If either ever married again, it would probably be to someone much more like the people they originally married.

You'll never get Louise to believe it. I've tried convincing her, but sometimes I think she has a different copy of the book to everyone else!

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments Why are so many characterizing Adam as a jerk for marrying Jenny?
He was following the advice given him by both his man of business and Julia's father! His treatment of Jenny is far better than that in many marriages of convenience of that period as is hers of him. Like Freddy in Cotillion Adam is basically a nice guy and behaves accordingly.

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments He is not a jerk for marrying Jenny, he was just born that way...

No seriously, there is only one point in the book where he realizes how difficult it must be for Jenny, and how poorly he has acted. That redeems him a bit, but for the most part he does not even try to get to know Jenny or show any gratitude for her efforts to improve the situation.

Kim Kaso | 511 comments And it is off & running. This book has caused the most polarizing discussions I've ever seen on GH, and perhaps on all my Goodreads sites. It's been years since I read it, & I remember it as being disappointed when I read it because it was not fun & frothy as I had come to expect from a GH book. I relied on her to make me feel good, "Happy Endings Guaranteed" as one shelf in the bookshop in Broken Wheel promised. I am interested to see if reading it again as an older person will change my initial impression. It may well.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Hi all

I'd prefer it if A Civil Contract discussions went in the Group Reads spoiler thread.

Thanks

Oh, sorry! I was just responding to a notification email - I hadn't realised it wasn't!

Kim Kaso | 511 comments Sorry. Was just responding to a notification. Did not look at thread heading.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ That's OK everyone! I just don't want the group discussion diluted. :)

message 212: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 613 comments Since she doesn't like Adam in the first place, why should she mind if he's unhappy? ;)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Closing thread until A Civil Contract Group Read is finished. If anyone wants to discuss me doing this please start a thread in the Heyer in General folder.
