Maureen's 50 Books Read In One Year Challenge
35. Good Tidings by Mary O'Reilly --2nd in the series-the author has more than one crime to be settled, which was an it confusing initially. Overall, the story was enjoyable, one you wil not put down until you finish. I can wait to start Book 3 later in tonight!
#36 Good Tidings Terri Reid,,,2nd in the Mary O'Reilly series---enjoyable page turner, reminiscent of the movie Ghost! Great cliff hanger leads right into book 3!
#39. Pray For Silence, a Thriller (Kate Burkeholder #2 series). Linda Castillo I really enjoyed this one. The setting and mystery invesitgatiom reminded me of Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. Howver, the violence and content of the crime in Pray for Silence far surpass anything imaged in Plain Truth.
I really enjoy books about the Amish life, whether they be fiction or non-fiction. However, I find myself increasingly disliking Picoult. Would you still recommend Linda Castillo's series?
Yes, Tiffani I would recommend the series. I read them out of sequence, so I don't think the order is necessary for background. It was a quick read because I could not stop reading. I agree about Jodi Picoult, I used to really love her books, but not as much now. Too preachy.
40. My Name is Memory, Ann Brashares. The story of two souls united across many centuries, and one man's quest to stay together. I really enjoyed this book up until the end. I was satisfied with the conclusion, which is an obvious lead in for a sequel.
My 50 book challenge is on a the academic calendar. My students are required to read 25 books during the school year. As a teacher, I try to live by the same requirements. I usually read at least 25 books between September and June. When I joined Good Reads, I saw the 50 Book Challenge, and thought it was a great incentive. So I have to read 10 more by September 20, 2012 to make the 50. n I hope I make it!!!!
41. Put Reading First: The Research Building Blocks For Teaching Children To Read (Kindergarten Through Third Grade). 2001, The Partnership for Reading. Concise booklet with helpful strategies to build a solid reading foundation in the early grades. Great for any teachers library.
LOL I can't count! Put Reading First it's 42! And I am on to my summer professional reading--a great time to prepare for September.
43. Basic Facts About Dyslexia & Other Reading Problems, Louis Cook Moats, Karen E. DakinPublished by the International Dyslexia Association, this booklet explains how children or adults with dyslexia process language, expel common myths, and suggest strategies for classroom or home use. Written in clear, non-technical language, this book clarifies many misconceptions and should be read by teachers and parents of struggling readers.
How wonderful that students have to read 25 books a year! My 7th grader exceeds that, probably, but has no real requirement but for a 4th grade level book talk from a list of general recommendations . . .
Yes Kate. It is really great. It ia part of their requirement for promotion. They also have a silent reading time each morning for 25 minutes while the classroom teacher has her reading conferences. I wish we had that time when we were in school. ;)
45. Final Call- Mary O'Reilly Mystery series Book 4- Mary and company investigate the murder of an eccentric actress in the local theatre company. Similar to the others. Just as enjoyable.
46. Darkness Exposed- A Mary O'Reilly Paranormal mystery Book 5- the murderer of Jeannine Alden, the missing wife of Chief of Police Bradley Alden is finally revealed. Will she finally rest in peace?
The Last Dickens. by Matthew Pearl Finished my 50 Book Challenge with 6 days to spare. Thanks to Goodreads for the 50 Book Challenge for helping me to step up my reading goal. It has been great!
Now I've got to move into my next 50 books in a year challenge. I am off to a slow start. Having a hard time focusing. But--here goes: 1. Burning Bright by Tracy Chavelier.
Just finished my second book in the 50 book challenge for 2012-13. I am far below schedule since mom is visiting. Putting the books down in favor of time spent together. I can always catch up with my reading when mom goes home. Time together is precious. 2. Elizabeth Street, Laurie Fabiano.
Based upon the author's family history, Elizabeth Street tells of the bravery of immigrants from Calabria as they settle in America. Events from the turn of the century in both Italy and America are revealed. A true heart warming tale, filled with strong interesting characters, and a plot that will keep you turning the pages. The author's pride in her ancestors is well deserved.
Just saw "Basic Facts about Dyslexia . . ." which I will order promptly. Any other favorites? My second son is Dyslexic/NVLD/ADD . . . parenting him has been its own bachelor's degree (and he's only 11)

I am going to go through my library to give you some suggestions that I have used in the classroom. I agree, you learn more from working with a child through trial and error. These are the things that could never be found in a book or taught in a classroom.

Eh, the goal of 50 is just a fun challenge; the important part came in that second sentence: you're enjoying what you're reading.

24. Inferno, by Dan Brown - thought provoking and action packed. I enjoyed this book as much as Angels and Demons, which was his best in my opinion. The setting is in Florence, Venice and Istanbul. As usual Dan Brown as gives the reader much insight to the many architectural treasures and art from the ancient and medieval world. Don't miss it.
