Croak question

Hi Everybody! So i loved this book with all of my heart, but i am a little confused one thing. Why can Lex Damn souls. They mentioned that she and her uncle knew, but i don't think that they ever mentioned why. Is this supposed to be told in the next book? I'm just curious. Can someone please quench my curiosity?
