I've read a couple of books on Buddhism and I'm having a difficult time finding one that a.) I can relate to and b.) doesn't just devolve into a history lesson about it's masters that I've never heard of before. Is there a book about buddhism written in a modern, western vernacular that can explain basic tenants, how to actually beginning meditating properly and how to effectively incorporate Buddhism into a person's life?

I have found "The miracle of mindfulness" by Thich Nhat Hanh very useful for beginner meditation and its very westerner friendly. Most of the books by His Holiness The Dalai Lama are aimed at westerners and explain the jargon. The other option would be to go to your nearest Buddhist centre and check out some text books from their library because there are many that aren't in bookshops or published widely.
