No, they weren't. The scene was really vague and hinted at intimacy, but in Sever, Rhine tells Linden that her and Gabriel never had sex.
Madame wanted them to have sex (hence the contraceptive pill and the aphrodesiac), but the way I read it, they never did.
Madame gave Rhine a birth control pill. The incense and opiates made the "loose and loopy". I don't think they had sex.
I think it was implied, but not clarified, on purpose. It's up to interpretation.
I think the pill just made them want to make out. the story indicates they are still virgins. In my mind, virgins in a world like theirs, wouldn't be anxious about actual intercourse, drugs or not. (with the exception of the overeager preteen baby maker) I think if they weren't virgin, they'd definite would've done it. The pill made them loosen their inhibitions.

Hello, yes they were and they were'nt doing it like all these other couples in these other books they were doing it to keep alive. For survival and would you do the same thing to stay alive would you not?
