Why is there a limit to the number of people you can invite to an event?

For some reason, I am only ever able to invite a maximum of 214 people to an event. It seems like such a strange number. I was wondering if there is a limit and if so, why such a random number? If its spamming the site is trying to avoid, then surely inviting 200 is no different to inviting 100?
