Items: Fire, Water, Bad Weather (Storm) and Castle.

Review: This book featured Royal Stone, a young college graduate, who was trying to find a job in this hard economy. She happened to find a job running a boutique of an older Russian immigrant, Dmitry Medlov, who took pity on her as she hustled from interview to interview. He saw her potential as a young business major, and soon he was rewarded with success. Meanwhile, Royal and Dmitry’s business relationship turned romantic and the two became an item. The closer they became, the more it became apparent that there where things about Dmitry that Royal didn’t know. For instance, he always had body guards, he was wealthier than any restaurateur and boutique owner, and he never fully answered questions about his secret meetings. What secrets was Dmitry hiding and were they enough to tear this couple apart?

I liked this book but it had some editing & flow issues. It didn’t detract from the story, but sometimes your eyes drift to them. Also, I had a hard time believing that the heroine, an orphan who grew up with various foster parents and in the system, was that naïve. Dmitry bought $40,000 earrings, clothes unlike anything she ever wore etc. In the beginning, the heroine was described as a go-getter and hustler, not an ostrich like she apparently was. So I found myself giving her the “side-eye” in disbelief.

I did appreciate that this book didn’t focus on race, but on the love and the sacrifices one had to make for love. It kept the story from being overly heavy and just let the audience go along this ride as two people from different experiences built a life together.

I enjoyed this book, but I must admit that I find books featuring mob life to be a conundrum. Mob bosses are ruthless killers, but they are deeply religious/spiritual. Mob bosses are always trying to expand territory and take by force, but they are loyal and protective of their family. They lie constantly to the ones they love, but they are unforgiving to those who lie to them.
I am curious about secondary characters like Anatoly and Cory. I would be interested in reading the sequels to see how these characters dealt with their various dilemmas. But like I said, I find Mob Life to be an enigma.

Fire: “the building sat across from the fire department and the National Civil Rights Museum and only entires away from the popular boutique Muse.”(6%, Ch. 2)

Water: “She was sweating from the outside in and holding back a heat stroke with a bottle of tap water” (1%, Ch. 1)

Bad Weather (Storm): “She listened to the storm rock the city with wind, heavy rains and lightening as she waited . “ (13%, Ch. 4)

Castle: “ When do you want me to move to Castle Dmitry? ” (42%, Ch. 11)

By the way, I'm feeling better today. I still feel tired, but that is probably from me being slightly anemic which doesn't help with this problem I've been facing for a couple days now. I've been taking iron pills for 5 months now ever since I found out I've a slow thyroid (hypothyroidism), but I need to eat more foods with iron in them too.

Amy I have been on Synthroid for years for that same condition....It is totally manageable but when not regulated you can have everything else be thrown off hormonally. You'll feel like a new woman when you get on pills for that.

I had the problem back in February when I was diagnosed and was put on the thyroid pill and iron pills because my first blood test showed I was a little anemic. My doctor and I haven't found the right dosage yet for me, but hopefully soon we will. My next blood test is in about 2 weeks and I already had my blood drawn for testing at least 4-5 times since February. This thyroid problem comes from my dad's side too.

Oh, Amy, I know how hard it is to find the right dosage...I found that the generic didn't work for me and have to have brand name only....They have actual human Thyroid meds now too but super duper expensive.....so the synthetic it is for me....And the hardest part is you have to take it on an empty stomach...I always forget or take it when eating and that counteracts the medicine's effectiveness...I feel your pain Amy....I do. but it will get better.

I think it's worth it because before I was getting headaches all the time it seems and sometimes they were very painful for me like a migraine.

I don't know if my doctor put me on the generic or the real one, but it costs me 4 dollars every time I go get it filled at Walmart. Yeah, I was told to take it on an empty stomach too and wait at least a hour before you can eat something to let it absorb in your body so I take it whenever I wake up first thing in the morning.

Review: This was a re-read for me on a book I first read as a buddy read last year. I think I actually enjoyed this more the second time around. I knew more of the characters involved, and knowing how it ends, was able to enjoy the book as a visit to an old friend, rather than becoming emotionally involved in the dramatic conflict. I love Ms Cole's humour, and Lachlain was hotter than I remembered. I felt like they both started the book as underdogs, and lack of trust and communication was the main problem for Emmaline and Lachlain. But loved their story. Glad I re-visited!
*Mythical Creature - Valkyrie, Vampire, Werewolves... and that's just the Hero and heroine!
