Annie I loved Hush, Hush! It was so good!

Jane Atchley This is a wonderful series. In fact, Hush Hush is July's recommended read on my web site this month. Myself, I found Nora fresh and feisty. The popular notion of fallen angels good demons I see in fiction makes me a little uncomfortable, but hey...that's my Catholic upbringing...I got over it for this series and I'm glad I did.

Not everybody likes the same thing. That's what keeps life interesting.

message 54: by Maya (new) - rated it 1 star

Maya Strongheart I think I see the point of the criticism and judgment the series gets. Patch at one point told Nora that there would be no one to hear her scream, then proceeded to push her up against the wall and make out with her. This is sexual assault. Sexual assault isn't something you look for in a significant other. Have any of you fans ever been stalked or sexually harassed? It's not romantic, it frikkin' creepy. I read it on an ebook and thought that this was teen urban horror, I had no clue it was supposed to be romantic. As for you not liking criticism, authors should be criticized. Becca Fitzpatrick created a product which readers pay money for. If she gets paid to write, she should write well. I like a lot of books that others dislike, and that's fine. We all have a right to voice our opinions. Sorry if this feels a bit ranty, but it makes sense that people who have read the book can voice their displeasure. I think that main problem was marketing. If it was straight adult rape fantasy, then readers could focus on other parts of the story.

Kate one of my favourite series EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dis it at your PERIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ingvild I couldn't agree more. I HATE when people complains about books I love and say they think it sucks and blablabla. But the worst is when they even compare this series to other series. Why in the world do we compare books in the first place? It is so unneccesary, why not be happy with the book itself and don't think of "this is SOO wannabe-that" or be annoyed at the author and stuff.

Good post! (Perhaps too many exclamation points, haha)

lol. I think there are ruled for over exclamation marks. Even a fine...I was so so about this series. The love story was what was holding the book together.

Well they are a sign of a deranged mind according to a much better author than that of this series.

And Ingvild Katherine why the hell shouldn't we compare books? Are you trying to say people aren't allowed to notice and point out connections between books on a book discussion site? They're going through that on the Hobbit boards where someone brought up Treasure Island and The Hobbit.

Do you never compare one movie you've seen to another? You didn't compare Percy Jackson and Harry Potter (not that it should be) or Eragon and Star Wars? How about one flavor pizza to another? Because as far as I'm concerned most YA novels follow a pretty standard formula (or *recipe*) with a few different ingredients every time.

Believe it or not these sorts of things are what teach people to be critical thinkers or at least to use their brain a little bit even if all they read is escapist, wish-fulfilling fluff like these books. If you can't compare similarities or differences between things ever in life how do you expect to go job hunting or decide who to vote for?

Start working on these skills now, they're good for you.

Shanna Yes critical thinking is, well, critical.

Margaret Ushman Ingvild Katherine wrote: "I couldn't agree more. I HATE when people complains about books I love and say they think it sucks and blablabla. But the worst is when they even compare this series to other series. Why in the wor..."

People should be able to express themselves. They are allowed to post negative feedback on books and they can complain about it. They shouldn't stop complaining about a book even if it is your favorite series, everyone has different tastes.
People have posted negative feedback about my favorite series, too. I just don't take it to heart and I honestly don't care if someone does not like a book that I do.
I actually love the negative comments on books to see what people didn't like to see if I might like the book.
Not everyone agrees, they have different tastes, they should be able to voice them even if others disagree with them.
I won't touch the issue of comparing books too much. That is someones opinion too; they have the choice of comparing and not, its their choice.

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't mind the first book but I threw the 2nd book at a wall, I don't like the series much but I don't judge the people who read it. You know what? I don't have a problem with people saying they hate my favorite books, I might think they're insane but that's their problem so you guys don't really have a right to say that we can't say what we think about the book but you absolutely have a point when it comes to people being insulted. That has to end, because people like the book and people don't. Liking/disliking a book is NOT a way to judge people. This is one of my friend's favorite book and I don't mind that she likes it, heck, the girl that I'm fake marrying loves these books I DON'T CARE. So people, I think that you don't have a right to say stuff about me explaining why I like/dislike a book, other people, you don't have a right to rub it in their faces and hate the people that do like it.

that's all I have to say about the topic

you know that you can ignore discussions like this if you don't like the books that are talked about, right?

Margaret Ushman indivia wrote: "Margaret wrote: "Ingvild Katherine wrote: "I couldn't agree more. I HATE when people complains about books I love and say they think it sucks and blablabla. But the worst is when they even compare ..."

Don't assume that I don't like Hush, Hush, because I actually liked the book. I would say that its one the YA books that I liked.
You can't say if I hate something or not, if I didn't say it. Don't assume, you could be wrong especially when you have little to no information about someone.

message 68: by Kate (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kate i'm not saying you don't like hush hush, i'm just saying that i'm sick of people who dis things that other people like!!!!!!! it happens all the time and i'm sick of it!!!!!!!!!! i had an argument with a girl who did this sort of thing on a twilight discussion page, because i know people who like twilight and i don't like people who dis things that i like so i don't do it, but all i do is share my opinion with people who post on discussions about books they don't like!

Margaret Ushman indivia wrote: "i'm not saying you don't like hush hush, i'm just saying that i'm sick of people who dis things that other people like!!!!!!! it happens all the time and i'm sick of it!!!!!!!!!! i had an argument ..."

Then I apologize for getting a little defensive, but people should post negative reviews if they want. For the issue of people talking about a book on a discussion page that its topic is about the book itself/ how much everyone loves the book(not a general topic like how I would characterize this one) and they hate the book, well I find it silly that they would waste their time on it. But hey its their life not our job to dictate how they spend their time. Though I'm pretty sure anyone can find something better to do than sit at a discussion topic that is pro- whichever book and post hate.

Shanna indivia wrote: "i'm not saying you don't like hush hush, i'm just saying that i'm sick of people who dis things that other people like!!!!!!! it happens all the time and i'm sick of it!!!!!!!!!! i had an argument ..."

You need to differentiate between "dis"ing the book and "dis"ing the person. I can say what I like about a book and what I like about a person short of hate speech and slander/defamation. I can, like you, also choose not to "dis" things people like, it's a choice. Peoples choices when it come to free speech must not be curbed because it might cause offence. If we say you can't express an negative opinion on a book, what next, you can't criticise government, or oppression or religion, or atrocities. It's a slippery slope controlling the expression of opinion.

Kate alright, fine, dis away but expect to be brought up on it by more than just me

Shanna indivia wrote: "alright, fine, dis away but expect to be brought up on it by more than just me"

That's the beauty of it invidia, you can express your opinion, and defend your opinion, as much as anyone. It all adds to the marketplace of ideas that is available to all.

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

You know what else is a problem? The fact that people have such strong feelings about this sort of thing. I am.... in the middle with this book, but I don't understand when people practically worship/burn books, it seems kinda over the top don't you think?

Rachel if they don't like the series/book than they should just not say anything, don't say something if you have nothing nice to say

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

That's very... optimistic, there's nothing wrong with criticism

Rachel I don't mind criticism, I do it a lot, it only bothers me when they hate on EVERYTHING! I mean just say you didn't like the book and that's the end of it!

Shanna Rachel wrote: "if they don't like the series/book than they should just not say anything, don't say something if you have nothing nice to say"

Why? because a cartoon rabbit said it.

That premise is patently ridiculous.
I have nothing nice about slavery so I should keep my mouth shut, or rape, or child abuse ect ect...

I lot of great social advancements have happen because people had nothing nice to say about the status quo and spoke up.

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

That's true, you don't have to drag on and on about it, just say you don't like it, give basic reasons and MOVE ON, you don't need to hang out around people who like the book just to yell

"I HATED THAT BOOK" every other minute

I agree you shouldnt hate on the PEOPLE who like the books, but i have to say i've had a few 'i want to burn this book then do a voodoo dance around that fire just to make sure that all he epic crapness has vacated the area within which i live my life' moments, but im a bit mental like that anyway ;) and is it worship to have a spaz attack of happiness and joy and then dance around your house like a mentalist when a certain book you've been waiting for comes in the post? xxx

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

Hehe, nah I have spaz attacks, but some people have CONSTANT spaz attacks about ONE BOOK :D

B.L. Jones True that can be irritating, especially if you thought it was crap, but bloody hell you cant actually SAY that to the person, friends have attcked me for even insinuating that Edward is an emo meth head ;) xxx

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, please, and to all the people who dislike this series and love Twilight, please stop comparing.

Seriously? I hate Edward, and Jacob to be honest XD

Margaret Ushman Some people hate books that you like, big deal get over it. Everyone has a right to post their opinion (positive or negative). Its called Freedom of Speech, its in the Bill of Rights. If someone hates a book they can say that, and they can give reasons why. The same works with if you like a book. Some people are pessimistic so they judge every book, others like to think of what was good about a book, that's called optimism. There's nothing illegal or wrong about posting something negative about a book, their is something wrong about posting something about a PERSON because of the books they read.

Yeah i know i really didnt like the Twilight series it was serious Fanfiction, not even GOOD fanfiction xxx

Briana I enjoyed the series. It wasn't my favorite, but it was pretty good. I sort of think it is funny when people make fun of these books, just so I can see what they think. I don't reall like the topic of Vampires, but more importantly I hate when people become obsessed with things. That is why I didn't read Twilight. People get obsessed and it just doesn't make sence.I don't like the title she chose for the last book. My friemds and I (band geeks) disgused it and decided it should have been Fine and more related to music. Those are just personally my thoughts.

That's not what I meant, I just think that hating on a book is unnecessary, there are other problems in the world that people need to stop and they should focus on those. I think it's a waste of time to hate on a book when you can't change anything. People need to focus on things they CAN change.

Samantha The Escapist Rachel wrote: "I think it's a waste of time to hate on a book when you can't change anything. People need to focus on things they CAN change."

Alright just let my grab my big ol' wooden spoon to stir this pot up a bit...

Isn't posting positive comments just as unecessary? It's still focusing on something you can't change. By your logic why are ANY of us here having any conversations at all? We should all get off our computers and help the homeless people in our cities or raise money for charities.

This is a fine point to make, but you don't get to make that point when you're posting something equally unecessary.

message 91: by Stormmie (new) - added it

Stormmie I think people should stop insulting books period. I'm a writer myself, and if I knew people were insulting my books, I'd like to teach them manners. It's like directly insulting the author.

Margaret Ushman Stormmie wrote: "I think people should stop insulting books period. I'm a writer myself, and if I knew people were insulting my books, I'd like to teach them manners. It's like directly insulting the author."

People should be able to insult books. Everyone is different. You can't say that someone can't insult something if they don't like it and say that they can only praise things. If you tell someone that they can't insult something that they don't like then you are basically making them afraid to express their opinion. For example, I'm someone who does not like Twilight or the Evermore series. I won't pretend I don't like them. If I would pretend, I would not be myself and would be constantly worried about what people thought of me. You can't please everyone. If you want to remove all the negative or insulting things people post about books, go ahead. But, you would also have to remove the positive and the praise too. You can't have one without the other (for instance, white & black, good & evil, yin & yang). By removing the comments and telling people that they can't insult (or praise) a book, you're limiting their freedom of speech, and making them change who they are.

message 93: by Stormmie (new) - added it

Stormmie I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is if they don't like it, say 'I don't like it' and more on. I know people are different, I know you can't please everyone. But there's no use in trashing something because you don't like it.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

I think this series was good. But I think it was mainly held together by it's love story. I think that's why people judge people who like it.

message 95: by Stormmie (new) - added it

Stormmie I understand constructive critism, but there's a difference between that and completly and totally trashing something. You would walk up to a person who had done nothing to you and say "I don't like you because you're fat, and ugly, and stupid, and you're retarded." That's the same as insulting a book. Books can't do anything to you unless someone picks it up and beats the crap out of you with it, and then you should fight back. No, you shouldn't pretend to like something. But you don't have to be a complete and total jerkwad and trash it and insult it.

Militza I love this series, Cresendo ws my favorite.

Samantha The Escapist Stormmie wrote: "I understand constructive critism, but there's a difference between that and completly and totally trashing something. You would walk up to a person who had done nothing to you and say "I don't lik..."

You should take your example and subvert it to the positive side.

Would you walk up to a person you never saw or met before and start quivering and shaking their shoulders, shouting "ILOVEYOUILOVEYOUILOVEYOU - because you're wearing a black jacket and a steampunk necklace. Can I lick you?"

No argument against negative comments will carry ANY weight if it can't be swapped for positive and make perfect sense.

message 98: by Stormmie (new) - added it

Stormmie I would never LICK anyone. I don't do that about books either. It's more like "Oh, I just saw you resuce that puppy. You seem so nice!" However, I WOULD walk up to someone I've never seen before and "Ohmygosh you look like (insert name of fictional character here)! That's so awesome! Kaithxsbai!" With books, I read it, put it down, anc just think Whoa, can't believe it's over. That's kind of like when someone dies, on a way less drastic scale.

Samantha The Escapist Stormmie wrote: "I would never LICK anyone. I don't do that about books either. It's more like "Oh, I just saw you resuce that puppy. You seem so nice!" However, I WOULD walk up to someone I've never seen before a..."

People keep telling me I look like Drew Barrymore and I don't think she's pretty at all. Sigh.

And if someone rescued a puppy before you approached them that would mean that in the negative example they'd have had to try and kill a puppy. Congratulating someone for saving a puppy is not the opposite of approaching a stranger and calling them retarded.

message 100: by Stormmie (new) - added it

Stormmie No it's not. But I consider it a compliment to be called nice. But that's off topic. There's a fine line between constructive cristism and insult. Don't cross over, in this case. My point is, it's rude and the equivelent of insulting a complete and total stranger(unless, of course, you know the author).
