Janet | 80 comments I've enjoyed the featured author challenge and have been wishing we had something similar for fantastic authors who've written fewer books, so here it is!

Every month, read one YA author who has written four or fewer young adult novels. If he or she has written more novels in other categories such as adult fiction or middle grade/juvenile fiction, that's ok. A one-series author who has written more that four novels is ok, too, if all the novels are in the same series. YA-ish authors are ok, too-if it wouldn't be out of place in the YA section of your library, it counts as YA even if your library doesn't put it there.

Level Options:
1) Pick Your Own - each month pick a new author of your own choice with a last name starting with different letter. After one year (12 books) you're done!

2) Alphabetical - Take Your Time - work your way around the library shelves from A to Z! Read one novel a month, reading a novel from an author with a last name starting with a new letter each month. The Take Your Time level will take two years to finish the alphabet. You do not have to go through the alphabet in order - just keep track as you read them.

3) Alphabetical - Advanced - Read authors with last names starting with two different letters each month. You'll finish the alphabet in a year. Go even faster if you'd like!

Please help me to recommend new & few authors, especially for the less common letters of the alphabet. I will add all recommendations to this top post.

If you take up the challenge :) please show the difference between books you're planning to read and books you've finished reading. (Any obvious way is fine - giving the date read, bold vs. not bold, whatever you'd like.) Please use 'edit' to add books to your message instead of starting a new comment each time you add a book. merci!

Tish | 207 comments Janet -- your challenge sounds fun and I always like to try new authors! I think I may try the slow Alphabetical one (too many other group reads to try the quicker one). What does it say about me that I like alphabetical order? When I was about 10 or 12, I decided I would try to read every book in the library (fiction only), starting with the As. Well, I never finished even the As, but I consider myself to still be working on it. ;)

message 6: by Tish (new)

Tish | 207 comments Insurgent is supposed to be on its way, so when I go to pick that up, I'll try to get an "A" and maybe "B" author. Stay tuned! Right now I'm trying to hurry up and finish The Forest House so I can take it back in the same trip.

message 7: by Marysue (new)

Marysue | 9 comments This sounds like a really great challenge. Right now I am trying to read each book I have on my to-read list. It seems like as soon as I read one I add another, so that my list never gets any shorter. I will have to try this challenge as soon as my current one is complete. I will pass the word on though.

Julie I'd love to do this challenge, I just don't think I have the time :( I went back to school and I work so I'm lucky to get 2 books a month done off my regular TBR list, I'm not sure I can add a challenge to that but we'll see...

I really enjoyed Sorta Like a Rock Star but it took a good 100 pages because the beginning was a little over the top.

Tish | 207 comments When I was at the library recently, I tried to find a 'B' book, but it seemed like all the books were parts of series. I finally found Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman (which I've just started), but now that I've looked up the author, I don't think she counts for new or few. :) Anyway, I'm happy to find a good author who is new to me!

For what it's worth, I've read all of the "B" authors in the list above, and they're all fabulous! Many are so popular you'd probably have to put them on hold, though.

Janet | 80 comments Les wrote: "Has anyone managed to find an x?"

It's true, "X" is easier for titles than authors.
Why don't we say for "X" it can be a first, middle, or last name.
For example:The Hunt by Andrew Xia Fukuda

message 28: by Janet (new)

Janet | 80 comments Ok so far I've only added 8 new 2013 debut authors to the "New & Few" recommendations list. Could y'all please help to add more? (And of course new & few recommendations from any year are always welcome.) Thank you!!

message 30: by Amy (new)

Amy Aelleah (secondhanddragon) | 2 comments I've looked through my TBR list (plus things I've recently read) and have some recommendations for you, if, that is, you're still interested in doing this.

The Girl in the Steel Corset (Steampunk Chronicles, #1) by Kady Cross The Dark Unwinding (The Dark Unwinding #1) by Sharon Cameron The Cadet of Tildor by Alex Lidell Poison by Bridget Zinn

Innocent Darkness (The Aether Chronicles, #1) by Suzanne Lazear Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge The Treachery of Beautiful Things by Ruth Frances Long Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1) by Morgan Rhodes

I think I best just stop there, yes? Anyway, I'm thinking about entering this challenge - just not quite sure yet.
