Yes I do think the author makes the FBI guys out to be some kind of definite idiots. I really don't understand the obvious disdain for the FBI but I can get over it.
It was a disappointment that Harry ended up saving the day, I was surprised that more wasn't made out of it. I really thought the taking down of the killer should have gone to Jack or Herb.
Herb definitely has an eating disorder, but I love him for it. Yes the candy is a disappointment, and I honestly didn't even think about it until reading these posts, I just skimmed right over that, so they got me on that one!
All in all I loved it - especially the snippets of humor and sarcasm throughout. I wish I could remember some of those great one liners to use on my friends and family!

Part way into the book, I started to think the eating schtick was overdone. Then the bag of candy entered & was used (effectively, I think) to set up tension. It fit perfectly with Herb's gluttony. His shrug about where it came from created an expectation of disaster or near disaster. As he chomped away, I half expected Jackie to finally be lulled and take one, only to encounter the razor blade.
At any rate, I thought both the eating and the candy had decent payoffs in terms of plot. Other aspects of Herb kept him from being one-dimensional.

I agree, M. It never occurred to me to compare how Jack thinks like a man, because like you, I look at people as individuals. I, too, will be reading more of this series.
