The greatest part about re-reading the series is the ability to use the ASOIF Wiki and not have to worry about spoilers. Maps are also very helpful and have found myself digging deeper into individual characters that I did not take the time to on the first read.

I am really loving this opportunity to delve ever deeper into the characters, the numerous plots, subplots, and GRRM's exquisite writing. I'm totally in awe of his writing prowess!!

I've been re-reading the books, and Blackwater and the Red Wedding aren't quite as stunning the second time around. I guess you can only something for the first time once.
That should read "you can only DO something for the first time once".
I can't even recall what the Red Weddings entails, and Blackwater doesn't sound familiar.. Are they both in Book 3?
The Red Wedding is in Book 3 and the Blackwater battle was in Book 2.

I've been rereading and highlighting the verbiage from the HBO series to see what's there and what isn't.... What's included and what has been cut, and added...it's very interesting for someone like me who has spent 9/10ths of their life in the theatre.....

I think Aegon and Arianne could make quite an impact if they were to marry? I think Stannis will take the north but won't make it to kings landing. The wall will possibly fall with John injured or worse. As I think the whitewalkers will feature a lot more in next book.
Still not ruling out a benjen stark comeback he has not been bracketed in any of the books, with just presumed dead next to his name?

Dolorous Edd Tollett, steward to Lord Commander Mormont and to Jon Snow for a period, until Jon names him Chief Steward to Long Barrow and sent him there to serve Iron Emmett along with the spear wives. Edd is the best non-POV character in the series. I crack up at almost every word that comes out of his mouth!

Arianne Martell. This is another character I find boring and hopefully she wont overtake TWoW too much.As for the food; if I lived in Westeros, I'd quickly turn vegetarian as you never know what they put in their pies!;)
The book I found the hardest to read was A Feast for Crows, but strangely I enjoyed it better the second time round. The only book I haven't re-read yet is ACoK, as I leant it to a friend and he has only just given it back. Thank goodness!

As for "killing your darlings", the show is rougher than the books! Remember Robb's wife?
Talissa/Jeyne was never anyone's darling. I was lukewarm on her in the books, thoroughly disliked her on the show and I downright hate her on Game of Thrones Ascent! lol.

@ S....I think the books can hold their own when it comes to 'Kill your darlings'...I remember throwing ASOS across the room, after reading what happened...But then I picked it up again and continued.

Yah, Talisa/Jeyne was way lame. I didn't like her in the novels either and the show version was awful. I'm pretty sure Robb just married her because he felt bad for spoiling her honor and thought it was the 'right' thing to do.Definitely subjective there.
I never got the impression he actually loved Jeyne all that much, but they certainly played that angle up in the show, so maybe he did have feelings for her and I was just biased. LOL

He kept grey wind in the kennels for her at riverrun. He must have loved her at least a little!!
It is amazing how much has been re-arranged for the HBO series. I forgot that about a half a dozen plots and a boatload of people were totally left out of books 2&3 and in seasons 2&3, I was Gobsmacked whilst rereading last night. ( wtf? How did I forget all this? )It must have been both incredibly difficult and painful to decide what to cut and what to keep! Whew!

Concerning Jon Snow's lineage, that remains unknown. In this scene, however, Ned does reflect on the matter, and almost seems to regret how it went down, and especially regrets not being able to say good-bye to Jon.
