Here is tounge and cheek SMS text message conversation between the "Engineer" in the new movie Prometheus and Noomi Rapaces character. Some pretty funny questions are asked about some ...err... minor plot holes.

This is my interpretation of what is going on with the "Engineers". I don't think it is revealing too much & may help if you feel you need a clue going in, but I'll put it under a spoiler for those who may not want to know. (view spoiler)[The engineers are basically playing god with genetics. The film opens with one of them drinking some goo & dissolving into the water where his DNA evolves into all life on earth. This is not just trying to make new people, this is terraforming. The goo is presumably a catalyst designed to adapt the entire ecosystem to one compatible with the DNA of the creature it dissolves. Given other sequences in the film, we can assume this process is considerably faster than natural evolution. Since we can't actually get dino DNA from insects trapped in amber, this could be an alternate theory as to what killed off the dinosaurs & let man develop. Since evolution is a tricky thing, man may have been an accident or may have been intended as a labor resource. Whatever the intent, the engineers visit prehistoric man and leave a clue as to where they came from before disappearing. In the film, this turns out to be a remote bio-weapons lab & military staging area. My assumption is that it was originally a genetics lab & a base for their terraforming efforts. 2,000 years ago they decide to weaponize their genetic research & wipe out earth & possibly all the other terraformed planets, but the research gets away from them & wipes out the base before they can launch the attack, leaving one lone engineer in a stasis pod. ALL the whys have been left for another film. I do hope they put at least a little imagination into answering them next time--as good as Dr Shaw will be at replacing Ripley, I've already seen this film (repeatedly) in all the other Alien movies and almost every slasher flick from the 1970's to the present.

I'm also upset they they scaled down the engineers from the giant weird skeleton seen in Alien to a large human in a weird armored space suit. (hide spoiler)]

Richard, you should take over the writing for the movie. Your plot theories make more sense, but it doesn't explain why (view spoiler)[the engineers make the effort to populate the planet of their own kind only to destroy their human creations. They shoudl know that they are able to live on the planet as it is, so no need for human creations. An ultra-intelligent advanced race would also be highly efficient and would not do something without a reason. To create life only to destroy it is pointless. The only reason that would make sense to me is that they want to groom humans to be destroyed by their genetically modified military weapon (the "monsters") to see how quickly those monster aliens can destroy a whole planet's worth of inhabitants. Do, or do not. There is no why. I'm just trying to make sense of what I saw at the theater. (view spoiler)[ Why terraform & not colonize? Perhaps we were just an experiment in evolutionary biology. Why track our development throughout the stone age, then disappear? Something happened back home, possibly war (with the Predators if we take AVP as cannon). Why attack us? Weapons testing, denying resources to the enemy, maybe they were just upset about the crucifixion. The film made no attempt to address any of this. (hide spoiler)]

Richard, I like your explanation a lot, and it makes me appreciate what they were trying to do in the film more, but I still think they undermined that attempt in various ways -- like having most of the scientists act behave very incautiously, un-methodically and just plain dumbly towards their discoveries and (view spoiler)[by having it said "their DNA is the same as ours!" instead of maybe "their DNA is compatible with ours", since the former doesn't really make sense, especially if evolution is involved, as the SMS article also points out). (hide spoiler)] But I see it as interesting if flawed, and hope they get to do a sequel to try to follow-up on the loose-ends and WHYs.

I was witness to a Facebook thread where someone was saying (view spoiler)["Scott is just pandering to the creationist/intelligent design crowd! This shows the degradation of American culture!!" Really? Somehow, when intelligent design advocates are arguing their case, I don't think they're imagining albino alien warrior-scientists who decide our creation is a mistake when they're imagining the "intelligent designer". ;) One aspect I liked about the film was the suggestion "you might not really want to know who you creator is..." I was expecting something more thoughtful & involved, with more of a mystery element to it, but what I got felt more like Alien Lite. I will still get it on DVD & want to see a sequel. Will the sequel be an exploration of the engineers as a society & culture, or just another bug hunt? At this point I'd expect just another bug hunt, but Noomi (Dr Shaw) will be fun to watch in that role. I also hope that Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) also survived.
