Love Sigur Ros! One of my students surprised me with a CD of theirs, and I've loved them ever since. will give this a listen.

Hope you enjoy it.

ok, 2018, but still ... that's pretty new, and i didn't know about it - it's called THE PLASTIC ANNIVERSARY, and like most of their recordings, the big beats are delivered with a fine ear to the microscopic nuances from their electronics. there are a few acoustic instruments on hand, but when they do appear, they get a bit of treatment here and there - super tasty processing of trumpet, clarinet and percussion ... and there's some sounds in there that could be an acoustic bass that is strummed, but ... i don't know.
anyway, was happy to score it yesterday and have been playing it a lot.

FANTASTIC!

for me the greatest part was the singing and britten's writing for low strings and low brass. in addition to a fairly normal sized opera orchestra, there were five french horns and four trombones. britten makes great use of the low voices to emphasize the shifting currents beneath the surface of what's going on. otherwise, my partner and i left sort of feeling meh ...
sf opera's staging of PETER GRIMES a few years back seemed far superior in every way.

AKHNATEN is from 1983, it seems. There's a lovely recording out there. And I suspect the HD broadcast will wind up on PBS at some point.

EXOTICA is indeed the name of one of sun ra's albums. it's from the early 80's, if i'm not mistaken. it took me a long time to get into the recordings, because seeing that band live was such an EXPERIENCE .... records never seemed to measure up - but now i have over 20 of his recordings in my collection and can't live without them.

i'll look for that recording, i'm keen to check out more of his work outside the realm of film scores.
you probably already know them, but those string quartets ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. check them out - if you can find the recording kronos did on nonesuch, that's some exquisite music.

Dig on AKHNATEN. There's a video release of good old EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH that I can recommend, too. Don't expect much in the way of conventional storytelling here, but I doubt that's much of a surprise. Keep an eye on PBS, they might be running that Met performance of AKHNATEN, too.

yeah, you have to get into that space they created. it's not for everyone, but i guess since i was there back in the day and hung out with some of them and heard them live a few times (i'm not recommending them now, one of the main guys passed away last year so there is only one original member left), but i would start with either THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM, MEET THE RESIDENTS, or THIRD REICH AND ROLL ... if those don't do it, then walk away. if they do do it - and you might need to listen to those records more than once - let me know and i'll give some more recs.
and then there are the videos .... here's an all time fave

yeah, H's vocals are the deal breaker for a lot of people. they brought in lots of guest vocalists over the years, a good friend did a lot of work with them starting in the mid-80's and her voice is always a refreshing change.
i don't know BAD DAY ON THE MIDWAY, nor do i know that beatles' tribute clip, if it could be called a beatles' tribute - H and company were not fond of the fab four - well, at least not the fab four - tHEy probably liked things on the later albums, i never had the opportunity to ask though.
i gave my dad a picture disc of ESKIMO, and he said many times it was his favorite album by anyone, but he also said that about laurie anderson's SHARKEY'S NIGHT ...
it's time for me to go back and revisit THE MOLE SHOW, which i saw in performance and loved when it was released, but have no idea how it would hold up.

the later stuff that was recorded and released on verve are cool - and bird sounds amazing of course, but there's something raw and not attempting to be slick about these earlier recordings that make me swoon.
just ordered the books BIRD LIVES and BIRD - THE LEGEND OF CHARLIE PARKER, so that will round things out nicely.

anna vidovic is doing the first two movements of the unaccompanied flute sonata in Aminor and she's obviously created a harmony part (in the style of bach) based on the harmonies that the melody line outlines and it's so gorgeous ... totally floored me.
she's allowed me to hear something so new in this piece that i've been playing for over 30 years .. what a gift the virtuoso can bestow.
anna vidovic live in san francisco ... it sounds like there's 8 people in the audience.
