Love it--vey cool.
Didn't know if I should post this here or in the film section. It's a short film called "Leaning Towards Solace," done to Sigur Rós' music. It stars the lovely Elle Fanning and John Hawkes. The music is so beautiful. It's from their 2012 album, Valtari. https://youtu.be/KPBLTlLTFHA

WHY HAS NO ONE (named lance) TOLD ME THAT MATMOS HAS A NEW ALBUM OUT???ok, 2018, but still ... that's pretty new, and i didn't know about it - it's called THE PLASTIC ANNIVERSARY, and like most of their recordings, the big beats are delivered with a fine ear to the microscopic nuances from their electronics. there are a few acoustic instruments on hand, but when they do appear, they get a bit of treatment here and there - super tasty processing of trumpet, clarinet and percussion ... and there's some sounds in there that could be an acoustic bass that is strummed, but ... i don't know.
anyway, was happy to score it yesterday and have been playing it a lot.
I bought a filk album from the artist at a con recently. It had a parody of 'One Week' called 'Five Years, with lyrics based on Babylon Five. As a novelist I mostly stay away from music, since it interferes with my writing.

Listened to and watched a video of new music by Thom Yorke, from a new solo album called ANIMA, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Tasty. Basically, Thom nods off on a European subway train, and tries to return a lunchbox to a woman, and some lovely cinematography and choreography and dreamy camera gimmicks ensue.
Tom wrote: "Listened to and watched a video of new music by Thom Yorke, from a new solo album called ANIMA, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson..."where did you find it?
There's going to be a Jonny Greenwood program as part of the Proms, to be listenable on BBC3 -- a link for those who might want to check it out:https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000...

2nd that thanks!
Jonny Greenwood fans rejoice -- he has started his own label to facilitate releases of contemporary music, not incidentally his own. Here's a story. .

FANTASTIC!
last sunday we went to see BILLY BUDD, the opera by benjamin britten. the story is ok, the staging is kind of amazing at first, but by the end you wish you had had a chance to look at something else by the time the 3+ hour opera had finished.for me the greatest part was the singing and britten's writing for low strings and low brass. in addition to a fairly normal sized opera orchestra, there were five french horns and four trombones. britten makes great use of the low voices to emphasize the shifting currents beneath the surface of what's going on. otherwise, my partner and i left sort of feeling meh ...
sf opera's staging of PETER GRIMES a few years back seemed far superior in every way.

For fans of music, and of THE SHINING, here's an account of the musical choices made by the music editor of the film. Fascinating.http://www.gordonstainforth.co.uk/shi...

Saw Phillip Glass's opera AKHNATEN via Metropolitan Opera HD broadcast in a movie theater, and got a lot out of it. Handsomely produced and sung and played all round. Lovely.

AKHNATEN is from 1983, it seems. There's a lovely recording out there. And I suspect the HD broadcast will wind up on PBS at some point.
dear tracy,EXOTICA is indeed the name of one of sun ra's albums. it's from the early 80's, if i'm not mistaken. it took me a long time to get into the recordings, because seeing that band live was such an EXPERIENCE .... records never seemed to measure up - but now i have over 20 of his recordings in my collection and can't live without them.
hey tom,i'll look for that recording, i'm keen to check out more of his work outside the realm of film scores.
you probably already know them, but those string quartets ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. check them out - if you can find the recording kronos did on nonesuch, that's some exquisite music.
P -- yeah, those Glass string quartets are lovely. Dig on AKHNATEN. There's a video release of good old EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH that I can recommend, too. Don't expect much in the way of conventional storytelling here, but I doubt that's much of a surprise. Keep an eye on PBS, they might be running that Met performance of AKHNATEN, too.

Tom wrote: "Hmmmmm. The Residents. Hmmmmmm....."yeah, you have to get into that space they created. it's not for everyone, but i guess since i was there back in the day and hung out with some of them and heard them live a few times (i'm not recommending them now, one of the main guys passed away last year so there is only one original member left), but i would start with either THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM, MEET THE RESIDENTS, or THIRD REICH AND ROLL ... if those don't do it, then walk away. if they do do it - and you might need to listen to those records more than once - let me know and i'll give some more recs.
and then there are the videos .... here's an all time fave
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRwey...
Thanks for the words, P. I knew THIRD REICH AND ROLL and liked it, and I had the CD-ROM game of BAD DAY ON THE MIDWAY and enjoyed that too, and somewhere recently I heard a clip of "Beyond The Valley Of A Day In The Life" a splendid assembly of Beatles clips mixed together, and I picked up ESKIMO and MEET THE RESIDENTS and enjoyed them mainly. I'm not sure I'm going to be a fanatic for them, but I'll happily dabble here and there. Might be an odd distinction, but I'm preferring their instrumentals to their vocals.
Tom wrote: "Thanks for the words, P. i don't know BAD DAY ON THE MIDWAY, nor do i know that beatles' tribute clip, if it could be called a beatles' tribute - H and company were not fond of the fab four - well, at least not the fab four - tHEy probably liked things on the later albums, i never had the opportunity to ask though.
i gave my dad a picture disc of ESKIMO, and he said many times it was his favorite album by anyone, but he also said that about laurie anderson's SHARKEY'S NIGHT ...
it's time for me to go back and revisit THE MOLE SHOW, which i saw in performance and loved when it was released, but have no idea how it would hold up.
from time to time i have to do a deep dive with charlie parker, and so when CHARLIE PARKER - THE COMPLETE SAVOY AND DIAL RECORDINGS showed up in yesterday's mail, i started another plunge. these are all of bird's early recordings from 1944 - 1948, and while there are some rough cut gems here and there, there is also some of my favorite recordings of his compositions. in some cases, with tunes like DEWEY SQUARE, QUASIMODO, and several others, he never recorded them again (to the best of my knowledge), so this package (which contains 8 - count 'em - 8 CDs) is a goldmine.the later stuff that was recorded and released on verve are cool - and bird sounds amazing of course, but there's something raw and not attempting to be slick about these earlier recordings that make me swoon.
just ordered the books BIRD LIVES and BIRD - THE LEGEND OF CHARLIE PARKER, so that will round things out nicely.
just surfing in you tube and ran across this ...anna vidovic is doing the first two movements of the unaccompanied flute sonata in Aminor and she's obviously created a harmony part (in the style of bach) based on the harmonies that the melody line outlines and it's so gorgeous ... totally floored me.
she's allowed me to hear something so new in this piece that i've been playing for over 30 years .. what a gift the virtuoso can bestow.
anna vidovic live in san francisco ... it sounds like there's 8 people in the audience.

not sure where i should post this, but this makes sense.a friend gave me a guest pass for MASTER CLASS, and the first one i went to is the herbie hancock master class and skipped the intro and went straight to the first chapter: improvisation. while it may start by relating to people with little or no music education, he quickly starts taking chords and "decorating" them in that way that sounds like no one but herbie. i loved his manner throughout - such an open and beautiful human being.
