While that's a nice thought, there's 3 more books about Elsewhere.

What are they called?

Messenger
Son
I highly recommend them all! Gathering Blue does not appear to be connected to The Giver at first but is rather the opposite of The Giver. Messenger vaguely connects them, and Son brings all of the books together. If you liked The Giver, you'll love the series!

That fact that you're in 10th grade and do not know this shows you need a better education.

I don't think of these books as canon. Gathering Blue is a standalone novel, and I like to read this book as being during the same time period as The Giver, but in a different community. I always read The Giver's ending as Jonas and Gabe dying and fading into their memories... a sacrifice that would be needed to help the community change and heal.
Messenger was written 9 years after The Giver, and Son was written several years after that. The author wrote sequels after fans and publishers clamored for them. I think that these books are fine commercially and I did enjoy them. However, in my opinion, the author retconned the ending of The Giver to force the sequels to work. Artistically, they do not make sense, given the ending of the first book.
If you look at The Giver as a standalone work, it seems to end with Jonas in a type of heaven. Jonas goes into his two favorite memories-- sledding and Christmas and he realizes the music he's hearing for the first time is nothing but an echo of memory. To me, it always seemed clear that he and Gabe have sacrificed themselves, but have found a beautiful "elsewhere" after dying.

This is really interesting, and definitely the best case I've heard to argue that Lowry intended Gabe and Jonas to die. I'm kind of glad she went on to write more books, because they were all great (although not as good as The Giver. It's hard to get as good as The Giver.)

LOL it's called the fucking library dumbass. You..." Wow what dead thing crawled up your ass, jeez you're so nasty, I read online books a lot, but it doesn't mean that I read them on goodreads ok and I read a lot of books on something you've probably never heard of..... PAPER BITCH. So next time you start antagonizing a kid who's 15 watch it, especially if you have no clue what you're talking about. Also who gives a shit what I think I'm just stating my ideas so other people can agree or disagree. I bet you're a 3 timed divorcée who cuts herself and drips hot candle wax on yourself. P.S. You started this and don't make me use that special word that describes you ok!

Rosemary couldn't be Jonas' mother by birth or otherwise because her first assignment was Receiver of Memories, and then she died. She had no time or ability to bear children as a birthmother or adopt them in a family unit.

I'm having trouble understanding your grammar, I'm sorry. I think I know what you mean, but it doesn't make sense.
Everyone in the community was given their job when they turned 12. The only exception was birth-mothers who only gave birth to three children and then were assigned to work at a factory or low-end job. A birth-mother would never be re-assigned to be the Receiver of Memories, and a child with potential to be Receiver of Memories would never have been assigned to be a birth-mother in the first place. I also think if Lowry intended Rosemary to be Jonas' mother, she would have written it in instead of leaving it unsaid.

Either way, I think it's cool how the ending was left open. It doesn't make me mad like it does other people.

I don't know. Just a theory.

i agree Sophia, they sled down to another part of there world, they definitely did not die.

i absolutely loved it! could you tell me what you did not enjoy it?

"
i think its supposed to end like that;unclear; but it just adds to the suspense to the book. i think if there was a second one i believe it wouldn't be as good or would ruin what you already know.

I agree, we read it as a class 8th grade year. Have you seen the movie? I thought it was pretty good when compared to the book. Yeah not everything matches but its better than nothing.
