THEY ARE WORTH IT!
YOU NEED TO READ THEM YOUR OPINION WILL CHANGE

em Inam wrote: "Are Messenger and GatheSonring Blue part of the Giver series? Are Jonas and Gabe still in these books?"

Yes, Messenger, Gathering Blue are a part of the series, along with Son. Jonas is, I think in one or two of them as more of a background character, I think. I haven't read ALL of them yet. *sigh* so many spoilers

message 253: by John (new) - rated it 2 stars

John Bonner According to the sequels (there were 4, but Jonas and Gabe are only in the 4th) they survive, but in the original book the authors intentions were to leave it ambiguous, so it is pretty much up to you. Either way, the ending was too abrupt without answering 90% of the questions that were raised in the book. It is fine when an author leaves stuff to the imagination, but don't make me fill in ALL the holes in the back story and the way the world works, that is the authors job. It even left the moral open for interpretation, since at the end Jonas is questioning whether he ever should have left to begin with, so if he and Gabe die at the end it is almost giving the impression that the author feels that the "utopian" society that they left is better than the chaotic and dangerous life lived in freedom.

Ben Washington I really enjoy the series, but I wish this was a stand alone because I felt it was stronger with the answer to this question being left open to interpretation.

message 255: by Allen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Allen Berry I saw a book at Books-A-Million that says that the Giver is a quartet of books. I only read the first one... but I didn't realize that there were four.

Jenny I have not read the series, but reading "The Giver" as a stand alone book, I see the story as an metaphor of the bible. The giver is a godlike figure who sacrifices his "son" to save the people. Jonas represents Jesus. Gabriel represents the angel who anticipates Jesus's coming, as he did in the bible. Elsewhere is the afterlife. If the story is looked upon in that perspective, Jonas would have to die. Even if one does not look at the story in this way, it would stand to reason Jonas would have to die in order to release his memories. That's how Scarlett released her memories.

Bitsy Snyder I just read The Giver again yesterday. With the movie coming out, I figured we'd get more requests along with questions and I wanted to be up on it. I so wish I'd brought the 2nd book home too! I would be reading it today! I think they lived. The music was the clincher for me. He knew what it could be because of his visual seeing beyond. He and the Giver had discussed the hearing beyond. Like the other things he sensed, it was instinctual. The first time I read the book (ages ago), I was in grad school. I thought that they lived then too. When my class talked about it, I was surprised so many thought they'd died. I can see why now, but I've had time to think about it!

Jenny, I think Jonas's memories had to return to the community when he left. That was the reason why the Giver couldn't leave with him. The Giver had to stay to help the community process the memories that would return when Jonas was no longer with them.

Inês read both gathering blue and the mensager you'll see... now i don't know awhat happens in Son...

Michelle I like that the author left it open to interpretation.

I like that Gathering Blue takes place in a FAR different society with different characters.

I like that Messenger brings those two worlds together and included leader Jonas and a rascally student, Gabe, and the sled in the museum.

Looking forward to reading Son.

Electric Bubbles You gotta read "Son"! It is the story of Gabe's birthmother. It starts at the beginning and goes past the end of the Giver. And no, they didn't die, they reached elsewhere.

Seriously, it is one of my all time favorites.

Christiana Cali Yes. The order of the books is The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. I would tell you but that would ruin the greatness of the series.

message 262: by Paul (new) - rated it 4 stars

Paul I think it is pretty clear that in The Giver Jonas and Gabe die from exposure. years later Lowry added three additional books. In my opinion the later three book actually take away from The Giver. They add very odd elements to the story that don't add up at all.

I think the last thoughts were a hypothermia induced delirium.

message 263: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 30, 2014 10:14PM) (new)

I sort of worried --when I read the end of the Giver-- that maybe he was dying of hypothermia --and that they merely slid into the *memory* he had been given from the giver previously...however, i was relieved to read the Son and find the conclusion of a happy ending where they... ok i won't spoil it :)

message 276: by Dragonsfire (last edited Dec 01, 2014 09:10AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dragonsfire They don't die..but my question is...was this truly a memory given to Jonas by The Giver and if the memory was given to Jonas by The Giver how was he able to get to that specific time if it was just a memory? (speaking of the sled and cabin at the end) Or was it instead somehow Jonas' own memory?

message 277: by Emjay (new)

Claire, Gabe's mom ends up on this island, she washed ashore. She stayed there for a few years training to climb this big cliff thing, for she knows when she gets to the top the Tradesmaster will be there and he will help her find Gabe.
When she got to the top the Tradesmaster wanted her youth, she DID say she would give anything to find him, before she knew what was going on, she was an old woman. But the Tradesmaster kept his end of the bargain and took her to Gabe.
He lived with Kira and Jonas. Claire stayed for a few more years and never spoke a word to Gabe or Jonas about who she was, until the end of her life was near. Then she went to Jonas and epxlained everything to him and his wife Kira. When they told Gabe he didn't believe her at first. But then he decided he needed to do what was right and face the Tadesmaster, everyone thought it save Claire.
Then blah blah, Gabe fought with the Tadesmaster and he won ad he got his mom back.
