Sarah So if you just read the first book in the series, you have to infer what happened to Jonas and Gabe. I personally believe, by just reading the first book and infering, that they do make it somewhere else.

message 102: by Daisy (new) - rated it 4 stars

i like it but its confusing

message 105: by D.G. (new) - rated it 4 stars

D.G. I think the author said somewhere that each person must decide for themselves whether they lived or died. The sequels are not clear on that either.

I think they died. The last sentence seemed too final (the business of the echo).

Christine he did not die. the giver is in a trilogy and Jonah is referenced not by name but by saying somebody is the descendent of a person to see red.
Gathering Blue (2000) and Messenger (2004)

message 107: by [deleted user] (new)

I think it is boring at the Beginning.

message 108: by Amy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy I didn't really enjoy this book very much...it was kinda weird...just, just...WEIRD. lol

message 109: by Nicole (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nicole I can't believe my son had to read this book in fifth grade. How could he possibly understand the ending if I as an adult was unsure what happened? Also, the part about the father matter-of-factly killing a baby was especially gruesome and horrific for a fifth grader to read!

message 110: by [deleted user] (new)

too young. I read this in 6th grade, last year. I do not like the 5th chapter

Sevania Seriously, if you guys really want to know, read Gathering Blue and Messenger!

message 112: by Amy (last edited Nov 26, 2011 12:00PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy I agree, Nelly. I had to read this just about a week ago for my Language Arts class and I hated it! I'm in 8th grade and I couldn't comprehend the events in it very well. I'll be honest, when I got to the part where the dad killed the newborn baby, I felt sick, and I just wanted to throw the book away! My teacher told us that it's banned in the Mount. Diablo school district, as well as many others,(I can see why)but not in our's.

Sevania I'm in eighth grade, too. I read the books a couple of years ago. I was able to stomach them but I'm pretty good at stuff like that.

message 114: by Karen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Karen B Do we really "die" when we take our last breath? Or are we transported to another dimension? It all depends on your religious beliefs and/or your philosophy of life.

Sevania Right, Karen. But they don't die anyway.

message 116: by Tania (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tania I think Gabe and Jonas finally find elsewhere and now they have found people and are living their lives normally.

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes. They were alive the entire book.Silly people.

message 118: by Meagan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Meagan At first I was unsure but I think they do and go to heaven. :) but I was upset that the book didn't explain it.

Ms Piot this is a really great conversatin. guys! but medhi this is not much of a comment. not reptresenting yourself, your family, or the school very well...can you tell us more about it?

Marissa i think they lived and built a house or something

Battle_slug They died I am sure.
Following book is just bad try to repeate the success of the first one.

message 124: by Josie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Josie This is one of my favorite books! I feel like the odd man out reading all of the dislikes =) I read this with my son and daughter and we all have different theories about what the end means. I was sad and disappointed becasue I felt they died. The images Jonas described memories placed in his mind by The Giver...not to mention Gabe was nearly starved to death, so a hallucination maybe?

message 125: by Josie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Josie Christine wrote: "he did not die. the giver is in a trilogy and Jonah is referenced not by name but by saying somebody is the descendent of a person to see red.
Gathering Blue (2000) and Messenger (2004)"

Thank You! How did I not know this was a trilogy?? I have to read the other two books now. What did you think of them?

message 126: by Lohit (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lohit The book wasn't great but i think they didn't

message 127: by Dee (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dee if anyone is interested, Amazon has this book on kindle for 99 cents today

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought they were dead... until I found out this was a trilogy.

message 129: by amanda luke (last edited Dec 30, 2011 09:14PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

amanda luke I don't think they died. The reason Lowry didn't say was most likely because she left the decision up to the reader. Do Jonas and Gabe live or do they die. Well, that's a question only you can answer. ;)

message 130: by Hannah (last edited Dec 30, 2011 09:24PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hannah The ending has different meanings for everyone. Lois Lowry did it on purpose so that you have to think about it and interperat it any way you want.
If you think that when Jonas and Gabe went to elsewhere they died then that is your own interpretation.
There is no real answer your question.

Baylee Rae Mann they didnt die. Jonas became the leader of the placed they reached. read these next books in order. they are the sequals but not obviously. Gathering Blue, and then read The Messanger. then it all makes sense.

message 132: by [deleted user] (new)

oooooooooooooooooh, okay!

message 133: by Robyn (new) - rated it 1 star

Robyn It was unclear. I couldn't tell if they had reached another community or died. But the giver never said they were alone in the world, so maybe they survived.

amanda luke Baylee Rae wrote: "they didnt die. Jonas became the leader of the placed they reached. read these next books in order. they are the sequals but not obviously. Gathering Blue, and then read The Messanger. then it all ..."

Oh okay. I haven't read those books. Thanks. :)

message 135: by Paul (new) - rated it 5 stars

Paul (SPOILERS)Is anyone else annoyed that there are sequels to The Giver. I finished the book recently and only found out yesterday that Jonas and Gabe do live in the end.

I felt the best part of the Giver was the uncertaintity of the ending and that you had to make your own mind up about what happened. Now knowing that Jonas and Gabe are alive really annoyed me and made me think why did Lois Lowry bother writing a perfectly written, vague ending if she was just going to write a sequel.

Also, are the sequels worth reading or are they unnecessary, poor attempts to recreate the wonder and awe of The Giver?

Juliette! is there a sequel?

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know.

amanda luke Paul wrote: "(SPOILERS)Is anyone else annoyed that there are sequels to The Giver. I finished the book recently and only found out yesterday that Jonas and Gabe do live in the end.

I'm with you.

Caitlin Juliette! wrote: "is there a sequel?"

There is two companions, in which if you pay attention you get to know what happens to Jonas and Gabe. They are Gathering Blue and Messenger.

Juliette! no, they dont die. they find their way tp another community and live there.

Baylee Rae Mann Samantha wrote: "Baylee Rae wrote: "they didnt die. Jonas became the leader of the placed they reached. read these next books in order. they are the sequals but not obviously. Gathering Blue, and then read The Mess..." no problem, its one of my favorite books so i am happy to help.

message 142: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Samarah Whats great about this book is it reaches young readers on a deeper level than the transparent writing that has flooded our book shelves in the last few years. You have to think for yourself instead of having a story tell you what to think. You see the problems with the community from both sides, and you understand the questions and reasoning behind both defenses of what is right and wrong. Its sad to me that young readers feel a book has to be black and white. Whats the point in reading, if yout imagination.isnt tested?

message 143: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa No they reached the other place!

message 144: by Samira (new) - rated it 5 stars

Samira It was an open ended story

message 145: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna Lembke I do think that they died at the end of The Giver. I think that the sled was taking them into heaven. Also, if any one has seen Les Miserables i felt as though the singing was almost welcoming them into heaven, like it did Jean Valjean in Les Mis.

roselynn i kinda wish they died. i did not like the book. sadly they live.

message 147: by Chris (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chris Bumpas Joshua wrote: "NOOOOOOO!!! i wanted positively commentary on the book not a spoiler!. Joshua Sad!"

I agree it pisses me off when I read discussions on certain books only for people to mention events from later books in the series I haven't read. Game of Thrones discussions are notorious for this.

message 148: by Chris (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chris Bumpas BTW, my interpretation was that they died.

message 149: by Fallen (new) - rated it 5 stars
