Prarthana They survive!!! And I hated this book!!!!

Lollipop I dont really understand but i am in school and we did a project and my teacher told us to make up our own ending. I know there are other books but i decided to make it up. We all decided that gabe and jonas make it and live happily ever after with a new family. The commuinity goes back to normal and there are no differences(: like and comment(: :D

lauriehearts48 I loved this book. I hope they did reach elsewhere, but if they did, they would have gotten there in a realy bad condition because they were short on food and supplies.

K.E. Blaski I always thought Gabe and Jonas freeze to death at the end. No one leaves a sled at the top of a hill.

MizziQ :):)

B.evil i loved this book as a kid and am surprised to find sequels...i recently re read and its quite clear in my mindthat they died because that is the harsh truth of the world and what the community was trying to cover up any real truths to prevent pain in the long run...now i amfurther blown away that there is a sequel and they lived WTF its almost ruined for me

K.E. Blaski I'm with B.evil. It's a better book without a Hollywood ending.

Whitney :) no. they travel around in a circle and then they come back to his old community with all of the memories. i even emailed her. she told me.

mailto:info@loislowery.com <- Her email address!

Dakota i think they didnt or not

Dalton no

Whitney :) they dont i tell you!

Dakota all righty then, dalton thanks

Gracie I TOTAL AGREE

*check out my disscussion "THE ENDING" to disscuss futher.

Gracie Bez wrote: "no they aint dead there is a sequel to it"

the sequel isnt about them...iz completely different

Katie Amanda wrote: "First read Gathering Blue, and then The Messenger. Be patient, because they seem like they don't answer your question, but in the end they do."

I concur.

Caitlin Gracie wrote: "Bez wrote: "no they aint dead there is a sequel to it"

But they are in the same world and Gabe and Jonas are mentioned.

message 67: by Maya (new) - rated it 4 stars

Maya The sequel has nothing to do with Jonas

Natalie Sue Its an amazing book one of my all time favorites. Lois Lowry is a great writer and I like that she keeps you guessing at the end that way each of us can decide what we want for Jonas and Gabe. If you really want to know though you can read Gathering Blue and Messenger the companion novels.

message 69: by Jo (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jo They do reach Elsewhere, although it's not mentioned in the second book. They only mention "a boy with blue eyes."

Sally Lotz I originally thought both had died. But, after reading these posts, and seeing that there are more books - I can only hope they are both alive and well.

Meaghan Well in The messenger it was saying someone got there by sled.. weren't Gabe and Jonas on a sled in the end of the giver?

Natalie Sue Meaghan wrote: "Well in The messenger it was saying someone got there by sled.. weren't Gabe and Jonas on a sled in the end of the giver?"

Yes

Meaghan That's what I thought. So don't you think maybe that was them?

Debbie I loved the story but when it ended, I said to myself, "uuuuuhh, where is the rest of the book?"

message 75: by Maya (new) - rated it 4 stars

Maya yeah not exactly a cliff hanger but that idea

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

i think they did lol

Carol I read these out of order. Gathering Blue, Messenger and than the Giver over a span of about three years. I kept looking for a thread to connect all three and really only could see the connection between the Messenger and Gathering Blue. I think I need to reread Gathering Blue with a new eye to figure this out. I hope they are alive, but the end of the Giver was vague. They tried so hard to live and find someplace, I hope they did.

Becca Lois Lowry ment for you to think they did but she changed it later on and said that they did not and she wrote a sequel. At first i did not think she could but when i asked my teacher because we read it as a class novel he said that sience she is the autor she could do that.

Marina Fontaine The ending was frustrating because you don't know exactly what happened, but it's one of those times where the author leaves it up to you. My first impression was that they dies and went to heaven (so the nice community Jonah sees at the end is actually heaven). Or you could think that they found another community and made it there alive. As it turns out, Jonah is the Leader of that community in the last book, so there's no possibility for interpretation anymore.

Hanna[h] Cumberbatch I loved the book. To me it was definitly a classic. I mean just imagine a world with no color and no love, and yet it makes you be thankful for what you have even if it's very little. And yet you always have to apolize and people always have to accept. This book was truley amazing and I read Gathering Blue which didn't tie in with the Giver as well but hopefully when school starts I'll read the messanger and undertand it all. But the thing that was probably my favorite part was the memories. Maybe it's because I think of memories as being something so important, that's just me, but in any book that has some type of thing to let you share your memories, know that is truley beautiful in my opinion and I just loved how the book made you think, which also reminded me of the Hunger Games a little. But in the end, I just couldn't get enough of this author and book. Definitly a favorite, classic, and a role model for someone who wants to be a writer like myself. Probably one of my favorite books even if it is old and not that famous. To me it's way better than all that vampire crap and even Harry potter(though I love HP). This book was beautiful. Period.

Sydney Jo:) OMG one of the best books ever! i read ikt once....slowly but surely and i got every part:)

message 82: by Meagan (new) - added it

Meagan henckel well the author wanted you to make up what happened did thay go to a better place or did thay dir it is really up to you of what happend

message 83: by Levi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Levi I think the point of leaving the ending so open, was to give the reader the ability to exert their own sensibilities on the fate of Jonas and Gabe, HOWEVER, obviously the final two books kind of answer what the author wanted to have happen.

Natalie I don't think they die. Something about him saying he could "feel the sled rope in his hands" made me think they weren't imagining it.

message 85: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that they did survive- the music was another community welcoming them, and also in the sequel, it indicates that Jonah probably did live. However, I'm not so sure that Gabe did...I would like to believe so, he was my favourite character:) But then again, I would understand if someone else thought that Jonah and Gabe had died. I always wished that the author would give a more satisfying ending, because turning the last page I got a WTF? feeling.

message 86: by 7777 (new) - rated it 5 stars

7777 they say when you're hypothermic that you hallcuinate before death. i think Jonas died, and in turn so did the baby.

Marina Fontaine Yeah except we know for a fact Jonah didn't die because of the last book in the trilogy. Until I knew that, I was sure what he saw was heaven because it was so perfect looking to him.

Loretta The first time I read it, about 5 years ago I was sure that they made it to Elsewhere. End of story. I just finished reading it again, and this time I was sure that they didn't make it. It was the sentence that he knew that the sled was there waiting for him. How would he know that? but reading the comments, I see that there are 2 other books. Since I haven't read these, I guess the new community could have known that Jonas was coming and really did put the sled there for him to find. Or somehow Jonas and/or Gabe did some time traveling. I guess I will have to read the other books to find out.

B.evil Loretta wrote: "The first time I read it, about 5 years ago I was sure that they made it to Elsewhere. End of story. I just finished reading it again, and this time I was sure that they didn't make it. It was th..."

i felt the same way. i remember so specifically them getting there. but now it seems like he just gave a memory to gabe to make their dying peaceful. that being said without mention to the other two books that i didnt know existed until i saw this forum.

Bookie McReaderton Joshua wrote: "NOOOOOOO!!! i wanted positively commentary on the book not a spoiler!. Joshua Sad!"

Ditto!

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

They had to reach somewhere else, it would be pointless if they didn't!!

Shilayne They don't die in the end. They find new life. It was a terrific book, I've read it countless times

4danii hated this book, but i know they froze to death.

Prarthana How?

Leandra if you read it you'll know the ending. but no they dont die

Prarthana Oh....

Night Fury Pretty intense. Touching.

Prarthana Eh... didn't like this book...

Katie D Yes they do die because when Jonas says he hears music, he doesn't know what music is. He told the Giver to keep his one memory of music. Jonas saying that just proves that they are dead.

Valerie I can't tell you. But think about it! Why would she make them die?
