Thank you, Susan. I am truly blessed to get to do what I do.

Maureen Lang | 8 comments I just finished Wuthering Heights - with mixed feelings about it. Beautiful writing, wonderful setting, compelling - tho not very likable - characters. Hmmm....
Now I remember why I never finished it when I picked it up in my youth. This time, I was determined. I did enjoy the writing, but I still didn't "get" Heathcliff, the brooding hero. He's a bit too mad for me . . .

I read Wuthering Heights in my 12th grade AP English class. I actually loved it. As opposed to Jane Eyre by one of the other Bronte sisters that I couldn't stand.

That's how my daughter felt, too! She's all grown up now but when she read it in High School or Jr. High, she loved it. She still loves it, because we're in the same book club and re-read it the same time I did. When I mentioned that while I loved the overpowering romance and romantic feel of the book, I had a hard time liking the characters or believing their love was any kind of healthy love. She just sighed and said I was just too old to appreciate it. She may have a point! I plan to blog about it over on Christians Read this Wednesday. :-)

Dawn (baseballblondie) | 24 comments I'm currently reading (my main reads) are both for reviewing.

The Gifted A Novel by Ann H. Gabhart by Ann H Gabhart

and

Bees in the Butterfly Garden by Maureen Lang by Maureen Lang. I love the cover of this book. To be fair, I only started it really really late last night and must have been tired because I fell asleep after reading two sentences. (Sorry Maureen!)But I was also falling asleep while reading my Bible last night too.

Ruth (ruthaxtell) | 19 comments I never wanted to read Wuthering Heights as a teen, b/c I knew it would end badly. I finally read it, like you, Maureen, as an adult, mainly for research purposes. Same reaction as you--powerful stuff but not my cup of tea (love the other Brontes' stuff, though). My daughter reread it for a college class & wrote a paper on it (about obsessive love). She said at least it has a happy ending of sorts (with the next generation). That's what I found, too.

message 112: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Lang | 8 comments I was happy to learn that most of the women in our book club who were there to discuss the book (7 of us) the majority had the same opinion - Heathcliff just wasn't to be believed as hero material. The two who still loved the book admitted they probably still loved it from when they'd first read it as young teenagers, but as adults understood that the obsessive/all consuming love in the book was an immature take on life.

Made for interesting discussion, however! We all agreed the writing was lovely and the characters - although unlikeable - were uniquely drawn and memorable.

message 117: by Aerykah (new)

Aerykah I really liked L. F. Y. in Wildrose, ND too... :)

I didn't like Before The Scarlet Dawn. I found it to be rather depressing and disappointing. :( Not a very good "first book by this author" book to read.
I'm hoping, though, that the next book in the series will be much better.

Hi Ruth!
I don't do a ton of recreational reading, but if you enjoy Alaska historicals, you might check out Bonnie Leon's Alaskan Skies trilogy. I read her first one and really liked it. Her third just released. Happy reading!
