Well, if it makes you feel any better, I designed clothes when I was just out if high school. Had a nice little following of clients :]

See if there are any design courses that are offered near you...could be a college or even a fabric store. Learn how to tailor, and of course, drawing is important.

Then write a wonderful novel about the design business :)

There is no reason why you can't do both...design and write.
