Randy Bennett Yes it is, but you have to get past the first 100 pages. The best book in the trilogy. I was actually cheering for the trial scene.

message 252: by Ceren (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ceren Akoğlu This book is really good, but I can not say the same for the movie. An important part was passed over in the movie, and it might be shooted as more thrilling.

message 253: by Mariah (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mariah I love this book! It's one of my all time favorite books. I highly recommend it to anybody. It's very graphic and sometimes when reading it, it makes you cringe because of what Lisbeth has gone through and the crimes in this book. This one is my favorite in the trilogy.

message 254: by R. (new)

R. Marquez I read this and the rest of the trilogy. Much better than the movie (saw both the Swedish and American versions). Not for the light reader and it is written in the Swedish style which may be difficult for some American readers. But once you get into it, you should be fine. Lisabeth is one of those characters that you won't forget easily.

message 256: by Jane (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jane It is an excellent book, the first of three that follow the same characters. It is a thriller and so much more. Characters are fully developed and the stories are all very interesting. Highly recommend.

Meghana guru It's an amazing trilogy, only if you like crime and the psychology behind it. It's gruesome and merciless but a recommended book for any person who loves Crime and Psychology of crime

message 258: by Drury (new) - rated it 3 stars

Drury Jamison I read this and the next two but found them all a labor. They were good enough to make me think that if I just kept going there would be a payoff. Many people like them but ultimately I didn't. I'm still surprised I didn't just set them aside and if I'd had more reading on hand at the time I probably would have.

message 259: by June (new) - rated it 5 stars

June The first book is probably the best. The last book is the worst. I could hardly get through it. I kept thinking, when is she going to get out of that hospital bed and do something!

message 260: by Duane (new) - rated it 1 star

Duane Hey, I just thought of something... I think the reason Larssson had to walk up the 47 flights of stairs that made him drop dead from too many sandwiches, was that the elevator in the building had quit, right?

Now... Sherlock Holmes fans, what are the chances that somebody disabled the elevator knowing that Larsssson was about to show up, in a desperate attempt to prevent ANOTHER sequel??

Deborah Dameron Christy wrote: "Is this a good book? Is it anything like the movie? Is it worth reading thanks!!!"

Yes. In fact, read the whole trilogy.

Rhiannon Matson This is a very good book. It starts off slow so don't give up. I struggled with some of the names also, but once I got past it, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. It is very similar to the movie, but quite a bit more detailed when it comes to the violent scenes.

Keene Marin Its not a good book. Dont do it. Unless you want to meet the indestructible oh-so-cool-swedish-heroine that can hack any computer system, and refuses to die. Or if you are interested in old Mac computer specs, and how cool 40gb of hard disk is, then you should read it.

message 264: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, this book is terrible. One mans personal wank fantasy.

message 265: by Alice (new) - rated it 3 stars

Alice Although I wouldn't have picked this book myself, I read it because of all the press it got. Actually I enjoyed it. What a shock!

message 266: by Celest (new) - rated it 5 stars

Celest It's an alright read. I read the second one as well and it has the same sort of pacing as the first, just a bit more focused.

message 267: by The (new) - added it

The the first book was good didn't pick up until slander joins up with him the second book was better I'm on the third book and it looks like the best book of the three

message 268: by Duane (new) - rated it 1 star

Duane Alexander wrote: "Yeah, this book is terrible. One mans personal wank fantasy."

Well, yeah... But it's not ALL wanking! There's some animal abuse , and a car chase with a flaming wreck at the end!! (And *sandwiches*!!!).

message 269: by Joanna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joanna It's a less than mediocre book with an amazing female character that brings the book up to mediocre.

message 270: by Walter (new) - rated it 4 stars

Walter This is a good book - and a good movie. I'm talking about the Swedish movie from 2009. I like Daniel Craig in the 2011 U.S. version, but the original seemed just a bit better.

message 271: by The (new) - added it

The the original is 10 times better than the U.S. remake i love the original!!!

Well said

message 273: by Tony (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tony This is a book that opened the door to the unique delights of Swedish crime and drama for me. I couldnt read the three books quick enough and longed for more of Lisbeth when they were finished. But it lead me to read other authors including Henning Mankell, Asa Larsson (higly recommended::: read Solstrom or The Savage Alter as was called in English) and Kristina Ohisson...

message 274: by Chisto (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chisto Healy It is a great book but I like the second book the best in the trilogy. It sucks that he died before we could get anything else from him.

Catherine One of the best books ever.

message 276: by Coal (new) - rated it 5 stars

Coal Middleton The book is fantastic. It never dwindles away, i never lost interest in it, plus its quite shocking.

message 277: by Jamie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jamie Robertson A fantastic read, one book that I would every avid reader takes. Part of a trilogy, but easily could be a standalone book.

message 278: by Besa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Besa Maliqi Both the book and the movie are worth reading and watching.

message 279: by Lydia (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lydia Drexler I read the entire series in a matter of weeks. Lisbeth is such a unique character..not the usual blond hair, blue eyed, perfect body leading lady for sure. I love her tough exterior but soft interior. She kicks ass when she has too though. I really enjoyed the writing. It is deffinatly different, not an easy read by any means, but beautifully written, I thought. May not be for everyone though, I guess it just depends on the writing style that you prefer.

message 280: by Mariah (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mariah The girl with the dragon tattoo remains as one of my all time favorite books! I love lisbeth and I like how she can protect herself and I love her intelligence. I love the way this book was written and it definitely wasn't an easy read but I would recommend this book to anyone

message 281: by Denisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Denisa It's definitely the most overwhelming book I've read so far. The fact that Larsson managed to write something so perfectly, with such elaborated details is almost unbelievable.

message 282: by Frank (new) - rated it 2 stars

Frank Zipko Absolutely loved the character Lisbeth Salander, one of the most interesting characters ever, but the rest of the book and the series, "HATTED IT!!!" I don't have enough space to list all the things wrong with the book/series, just read "STIG LARSSON MAN, MYTH, & MISTRESS" by Andre Jute and Andrew McCoy, instead.

message 283: by Tony (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tony Yes this book has flaws but they have no impact on the story or characters. Lisbeth is unique but the relationships are very real and true. I truly believe Michael has a very strange view of women and practically abuses Lisbeth in the first book

message 284: by Nuno (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nuno Silva Just finished the book and I think it's great.
I hope the rest of the trilogy keeps the same quality.
Loved the characters, loved the story. It's overall very good

message 285: by Amanda (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amanda Christy wrote: "Is this a good book? Is it anything like the movie? Is it worth reading thanks!!!"

I have the movies and the books. So, I would say yes. But I agree with Sophie, if you can get past the first few chapters, I am pretty sure you would read the series.

The movies are a good reproduction of the books, but...never quite the same as what you imagine in your own mind.

message 286: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim Kitchener The whole trilogy of books in my opinion are much better than the films. Although they can be a very heavy read at times if you stick with it you will be well rewarded.

message 287: by evelyn (new)

evelyn Couldn't make it through the first few chapters. But I am willing to try again based on reviews here.

Nuran Carly wrote: "Couldn't make it through the first few chapters. But I am willing to try again based on reviews here."

Yeah, the first few chapters are hard to get through. They're pretty much an info dump and it's hard to get through without context and how they relate to the story.

Yet in the end they do relate

Yeah they do relate in the end, but you have no correlation at the begining when you first read it. You're reading all this details and info dump about some random you just met. I wasn't even sure if I was reading about the main guy or if it was a character that was a platform for the story.

I was expecting a story about a murder that hadn't been solved for several decades so the heavy information on a claim against some corporate company just wasn't relatable at the time.

I started the book and didn't understand the first few chapters, so I stopped. I work in a library and this was a very popular book club book. So I picked it up again and finished the whole series. It is about Lisbeth and the twists and turns had me captivated.

I managed to get through it because someone warned me about those first few chapters before I started, and after those chapters, I just couldn't put the series down. And as things became clearer, I was like 'Oh that beginning actually helps with the story and is now interesting, I want to know more about that other story and this Mikael as well as Lisbeth and the murder case'.

I ended up liking both Lisbeth and Mikael equally. Though, Mikael at times felt like a Gary Stu with every female wanting to have sex with him.

Rebecca J. Koehn Great book, if only for the interesting characters. Like everyone has said though, you have to get through those first few chapters. Then things get interesting. I loved following Lisbeth's story through the series and finding/figuring out why she is how she is and secrets from her past. She is a fascinating character. I watched both the foreign and Hollywood versions of the movie. I think both were well done, though I Iiked foreign movie Lisbeth better...

Jeanine Celentano I was wondering if the foreign films were better and I bet more like the books too

Kim Kitchener Jeanine wrote: "I was wondering if the foreign films were better and I bet more like the books too"

I watched the foreign films with subtitles and if you can manage to concentrate on what is happening on screen whilst reading the subtitles you will be well rewarded. In my opinion these are the better trilogy of films.

Jeanine Celentano Thanks Kim

Tony For eveyone that misses Lisbeth I would recommend reading Asa Larsson's (no relation) books based on a character called Rebecka Martinsson. She reminds me a lot of Lisbeth and the storylines are complex and very deep.

Read them in order starting with Solstorm ( The Savage Alter in English)...I highly recommend them
