I can't speak of the Twilight series because I haven't read it as yet, though from what I've heard I keep putting it off and find other alternatives to read. With Harry Potter I just found it's originality a breath of fresh air. I couldn't put the series down, it was just so easy to read yet so gripping. I can't wait until my girls are old enough that I will be able to read them to them. I can't say I have that anticipation for the Twilight series.
I am in a similar place as you, Belinda. I have read all of the Harry Potter series and loved it. When it was over, I felt a void. Since I haven't read any of the Twilight books I know I can't pass an opinion; however, I am a teacher and I know a little of the stories through my students. I must say the characters seem to be less substantial than those in HP. Someday I will try to read the Twilight series, perhaps, but right now I have so many other things calling my name.
I just had to comment on this.. :) First off I like both series, but I'd have to say Harry Potter is better in my opinion. It's just so detailed! It still blows my mind how everything must have been so thought out from the beginning, because everything is tied together from the first to the seventh. J.K. Rowling created this incredibly detailed world and I feel like I'm transported to it whenever I read them. However, I do like Twilight; in fact when I first read them I was obsessed. I feel like they're an easy read to get sucked into,there's just not as much..substance to them as in Harry Potter. Plus Bella and Edward got on my nerves quite a bit. It does annoy me a little though when die hard Harry Potter fans refuse to read Twilight and just assume they’re awful. Give ‘em a chance and then decide for yourself. :)
We have to admit, after reading Harry Potter it's difficult to find another series that captivates us in the same way. I won't say that Twilight is awful but I don't think it compares to Harry Potter.

I have not read Twilight and I adore Harry Potter, but Bella sounds like a simpering idiot who can't pull herself together long enough to resemble a human being so I go with HP.

I think that this is a debate which will last ceturies. Also, the fact that Robert Pattinson (who plays Edward Cullen in Twilight) was in one of the Harry Potter films as Cedric Diggory, makes this debate in some ways even more heated...as they both are connected. Harry Potter will always be ahead by a mile, due to the long history of the books and the 10 year film frachise phenomenon and so i am not sure i like Twilight 'taking over' as it were and stealing some of that hype and fandom which Potter had for so long. ...also, readers grow up and perhaps some do feel Twilight caters to thier older needs?
of course i think evry1 is gonna side w/ Harry Potter.I mean i dont know how Twilight added up to Harry Potter... maybe they were both huge high-franchise films with great audience reaction....
But still, like they are not even remotely from the same topic/genre or even remotely related....

I am sure that many of this group's members may find this controversial, but i personally feel that both characters are role models. Bella and Hermione are so different, and they show such strength but in completely oposing ways to one another. As a role model for females and young adults/ teens to aspire to, they are fantastic characters whose choices and decisions prove admirable. Honesty, compassion and determination are all qualities that Hermione embodies. She blossoms into a flower as she matures over the years (of Harry Potter series), into a strong young woman who is by no means flawless but rather who is 'human' and corageous. I certainly look up to her as an intelligent, loving character.
Bella is independant and shows how determined she is to live her life to the full. Caring and loving to friends and family, she is a young woman of spirit and passion. She doesn't crumble when times get hard nor does she abandon those whom she loves; and this is a trait that we all could take note of.
Sorry i cannot answer your question as just one name, but i do like to examine characters in stories as indaviduals (reflections of the author), rather than ...VS...
They are VERY different and yet both Bella and Hermione are great female protagonists. (well, in my opinion they are:))

Yep. Harry Potter is the absolute amazing-est book ever. End of argument. xD
I liked the first three books from the Twilight series and then the last one completely ruined it for me; I didn't like the story, I found the characters a bit annoying and - I have to admit - I struggled to finish the book because it simply wasn't that interesting.
