Maggie | 1 comments Hi everyone,
I am new to Good Reads, and I have always been interested in psychology. I don't have any fancy degrees, because I am only in high school, but am really interested on books about how and why the mind works.
This seems like a great group for what I am looking for.

Mrs Froggy Hi everyone,
I am Ambra and I am pretty new to Goodreads.
I have spent part of my life doing something completely unreleted to psychology, but now I have decided that I am going to follow my passion and my guts. I want to be a counsellor and work in the social field. I will attend my course next year.
I hope to find some great titles here to deepen my knowledge of the human being.

Beth (bibliobeth) Hi everyone! I'm Beth, 32 originally a Scots lass but living and working in London. I did a BSc in Life Sciences and Psychology (yes - weird mixture I know!) and I have ended up working in the scientific area although I have a deep-rooted interest and love of Psychology, in particular Neuroscience which I think is absolutely fascinating. Look forward to reading some great books with you all x

Hi Elizabeth and Welcome-

I do not think it is a weird mixture. I lean more towards the science side of psychology even as a counselor in training

Hilda Reilly | 26 comments Hi, everyone. I'm Hilda. I have a Masters in consciousness studies, for which I specialized in the neuroscience of religious experience. I also have a Masters in creative writing. For that I worked on a project using narrative fiction to explore one of the early case studies in the history of psychoanalysis. I'm fascinated by that period, when people were often misdiagnosed because so little was known about neurology at the time, and plan to do more writing about it.

Every month we have a book we read and there are books added for suggestions on several of the discussions. They are all related to psychology.

Ashley | 1 comments Hi, I'm Ashley. I graduated with my Bachelors in Psychology in May and I'm just on here looking for new book suggestions in my favorite category: mental illness/health. :)

message 116: by Hilda (new)

Hilda Reilly | 26 comments Hi Farah
Are there any areas of psychology you particularly want to read about, eg, personality, cognitive psychology, psychological therapies? Often a good way into new subjects is to read biographies about significant people in the field. There are a number of biographies of Freud, for example.
One of my favourite books is The Discovery of the Unconscious by Henri Ellenberg. It's a very substantial read but it covers several centuries and a number of famous theorists.

The Discovery Of The Unconscious: The History And Evolution Of Dynamic Psychiatry

Arnav | 1 comments Hi I am Arnav, Did my MBA in Finance but work in Operations field :D . I have always loved to read about the human mind but never knew from where to begin . I used to read random articles in internet .
Thanks to this psychological book club I came across "Phantoms in the Brain: Probing the Mysteries of the Human Mind " . Its an Amazing read for those interested in psychology. The best part is though the author is from medical background he has still managed to make the reader fairly comfortable with the medical terminologies and human brain anatomy.

message 123: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Stultz (wicketwillowbean) | 1 comments My name is Elizabeth and I'm 24 years old. I live in Kentucky (Louisville, to be precise). I have a BA in psychology and did two minors in English with a concentration in literature and Medieval Studies. I studied French for 5 years and have experience with Japanese, German, and Latin. One of my dreams is to translate Medieval Latin and French manuscripts. The other is to eventually become an archaeologist.

Currently, I work with toddlers as a teacher in a daycare. It's not exactly my dream job, or the best use of my degree, but it works for now. I am going back to school in August to work towards a degree in education so that I can become a third grade teacher. I also plan on doing another major in either microbiology or anthropology. I do enjoy some aspects of my job such as being able to teach my children and the joy that I receive when they finally catch on to what I've taught them. I also enjoy the smiles, hugs, and kisses that I get from my kids when I come to work in the mornings.

I am an avid reader and have been since I was a child. I generally read anything except westerns, romance, and inspirational/Christian books. I quite enjoy horror, fantasy, historical fiction, and mysteries. I have also gotten into the Quirk classics recently. Right now, I am reading Android Karenina. Classic literature is another favorite of mine with Edgar Allan Poe, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, HP Lovecraft, Victor Hugo, and Gaston LeRoux being among my favorites.

I look forward to making new friends and taking part in book discussions.

-Elizabeth

I have Bsc Industrial Engineering and Masters in Industrial Management. Lately I realize that the reason I love to work as Industrial Engineering is to help people work better. Only after I met my girlfriend which has Bsc in Psychology I realize that this is my passion to understand and help people. I hope I can learn from all of you here.

Lori Stevic-Rust | 2 comments I am happy to join this discussion group. I am the old lady of the bunch...just turned 50 years old and my grandmother turned 100 years old. I wrote a memoir on aging with her life lessons and I am a psychologist. So, this group seems most fitting... thanks for the welcome.

message 132: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4 comments I didn't see this thread until just now. My name is Barb, and I recently joined the group. I have a BA in Psychology and am currently attending graduate school in an effort to obtain my MS in mental health counseling (LPC). Additionally, I am specializing in substance abuse to become a licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor. I am very passionate about psychology; live, breathe and eat psychology. While my theoretical orientation is CBT, I am obsessed with Existentialism and Gestalt therapy. Hence, my psych role model is Irvin Yalom. Any other Yalom fans in the group? I will make every effort to read the book of the month and join in discussions, but my textbooks take priority. In fact, for my group counseling class, we have to read The Gift of Therapy by Yalom. I think the group read it already.

I also engage in research, and am currently involved in a study involving attachment style and recovery from substance abuse. I have collected all of the data and am now in the data analysis stage. Shooting for publication!

Glad to be a part of a like-minded group of individuals devoted to the study of human behavior!

Barb

Dr. Yalom is awesome! And "The Gift of Therapy" should be required reading for all counseling students and interns.

message 134: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4 comments We also had to read "Love's Executioner" for my Intro to Clinical Practice while in Undergrad. That was my first intro to Yalom, and have been a fan ever since. Had the opportunity to meet him in San Francisco last year at ACA, but had to cancel the trip at the last minute. My loss! :-(

Hi Barbara-

Welcome to the group. I currently obtaining my Masters in LPC as well. I have not narrowed it yet though but I can imagine my first part of counseling career will be working with Veterans.

Thank you Courtney! I'm sure you know this, but if you do not...LPC's, were granted the ability to work in VA hospitals to counsel as of last year (I think it was last year...if not the year before). Prior to that, the veterans were off limits to LPC's. Anyway, I don't know what state you live in, but in NJ, as part of our 3,000 hours of supervision, we have to do one practicum (100 hours) and three internships. All of that being said, you could use one of your supervised internships at a VA hospital to see if that is the area you want to pursue. You probably already know this, but thought I'd share ~ Barb

I did know a little about that but only until just recently. With many veterans able to seek treatment outside the VA system it was a little shocking to hear because I thought the VA had moved sooner to the change. I try to closely follow the military world and psychology. For me it is an amazing experience to see the military taking in the psychology world compared to many many years ago (well before my time).Being a brat and a wife to the military it is something

Thank you for sharing!
