Awwww... that's great! I'm not sure my spur of the moment choice of a first theme was the best though. I might have to start a thread for better theme ideas!

A few thoughts from my experience: In the 80's, you couldn't walk into a bookstore (new or used) and not see at least a foot of those Dell mass market Vonnegut books on the shelf. EVERYONE who read had read at least one Vonnegut, anyone who had any pretensions of being in touch with the literary "counter culture" (boy, THAT term is played out) had at the very least read Cat’s Cradle and SL5, and probably at least a half dozen others.
Not nearly the same amount of Vonnegut on the shelves these days, that and hearing from so many people who haven't read him makes me think he won't go on to the "Classics" status that everyone thought was so assured 30 years ago. I'm looking forward to hearing what the under 30 crowd thinks of him and his continued relevance, or lack thereof.
And I think it's awesome that so many people these days were attracted to SL5 because of its reference in "Footloose"

Another one that belongs in the 'extras' folder. Harlan Ellison's 1969 review of Slaughterhouse Five: link: SL5 Ellison Review

That was a nice review!

Fantastic! Nice find, Whitney. I'll post in the other thread and have a read. Harlan Ellison's always good for an opinion!

Looking forward to this discussion!

Oops. I recommended the movie as a starter to someone in another thread having trouble follow the jumping around in the book. I may have made things worse. It was so long ago that I first read the book and saw the movie that I don't remember which one I did first, but I'm pretty sure it was the movie, they used to show it on TV a LOT when I was a kid.
Anyway, welcome aboard.

Which should be often! I love that movie. I love dance movies.
I know, I know! If it makes you feel better, future reads won't have this long of a lead time. :)
In the meantime if people are looking for something to do, why not grab a copy of Lord of the Flies for the next Group Read after this one? It's only 180pages, so it's not too big a commitment. :)

That was me!! Also, to clarify--I'm not having trouble following the jumping around in the book, I know exactly when it jumps and stuff. I'm just not very drawn into the book. The jumping makes it boring and dull.
I doubt I'll watch the movie, nice as it is to have S5 in movie format.

Be sure to join in the discussion to insure a variety of viewpoints (although I don't think that's too much of an issue with this group).

Excellent! We have so many people who know so much about this book, as well as plenty of us who've been reading it for the first time - it's going to be a great discussion!
On the themed reads: I'm just getting ready to start another round of nominations, but I could use a little more input over here before I do: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/9...
