Go ahead, and teach us all some words from your language.

Maggie (lacr1mation) Oh this is FANTASTIC!!!
I'm constantly bugging a British friend here on GR to teach me crazy British words. :P I, on the other hand am a boring American. But, I do know some Yiddish words due to marrying into a Jewish family.
Farkatk(e)(pronounced: fa-cac-ta) means: lousy, ridiculous.
Shiksa (pronounced: liked it's spelled.) means: non-Jewish woman. (ie: me lol!)

This is cool. My mother tongue is German but I also speak English (obviously), French and Japanese. But not everything equally good/bad. LOL

Romanian would be great, Missdevora. I can 'use' it in my Mircea fantasies. LMAO

message 5: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Despite being Scottish, I know precious little Gaelic (our traditional tongue), but if you're ever in Scotland, raise your glass to your neighbour and say Sláinte (which is pronounced like slan-sha or slan-jha). It means "Your good health", but most of the time, people take it to mean Cheers!

message 6: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (lacr1mation) I've learned a small amount of Gaelic from my mother. Which mostly consists of cussing & bragging about being Irish. If you read enough Scottish/Irish themed books you can eventually figure some stuff out. Most notably the Outlander series. Where I learned the following gems: Sassenach (derogatory term for a Saxon/inhabitant from the British Isle.) & clotheid (my translation= dummy head.)
Also, if ya read enough wikipedia trying to figure out your own origin story you can piece together some stuff. For instance bally= town, loch= lake etc.

Japanese, really? wow! It's one of the languages I'd love to learn...but never have time! Do you know any really easy, like for starters, books in german?

And now a little sth in romanian (you pronounce almost like it's spelled) *wink*

Noapte bună, somn uşor, dulceață
Mircea, te rog...
Tot ce vrei, e al tău
Vei rămâne lânga mine?
În visurile tale...

Which means...

Good night, sleep well, my sweet/dear
Mircea, please ...
Everything you want, is yours
Will you remain beside me?/Will you stay?
In your dreams ...

message 10: by Cat (new)

Cat (shelfmotivatedbooks) | 157 comments Ah one of my life goals is to learn more languages! I grew up fluently speaking Cantonese (Chinese), until I was about 5. Then I learned English and went to school and all that Cantonese went out the window :(...my mom put me and my sister in Saturday morning Chinese class but we rebelled!

I studied French for about 5 years, but didn't learn too much of the good stuff!

French:
merde - shit
zut - darn/damn it

Anyway trying to learn Korean...their alphabet seems deceptively easy to learn...we'll see!

Maybe we can start a thread to talk about the books in French.

There is also a thread to talk about the first book in German.

Lannister, couldn't we change the German thread into a general "Cassie/Dory - German discussion" thread and maybe have the same for French?

Sassenach is what we Scots call the English LOL! (Sorry to my English friends!) Clotheid I would guess is just cloth head, so yeah, I guess dummy would be about right.

'I love you' would be 'Te iubesc' and *blushing: îmbujorată* 'I want to lick your feet' is 'Vreau să îți ling picioarele'

P.S. Great Idea about the treads in German and French!

I adore this thread!! Its AWESOME!!

Shiksha in hindi means Education. Weird huh?

Some more Hindi:

Namastey: Hello (in a respectful way.)
Kaise hai aap? : How are you? (aap is the respectful way of saying 'you')
Dhanyavaad : Thanks

@Sarah - I know!! its seriously cool just how international we are. Or maybe we're just Earthians :)

EDIT: I should mention, i guess, I speak Hindi (as I am from India) and English, and constantly watching anime has taught me a teeny bit of Japanese.

Margo | 663 comments Okay so because I'm Polish I speak Polish and of course English :). I also understand some German 'cause my sisters currently live in Germany and their kids often start to speak in German when they want something. I understand a little bit of Japanese (but only a tiny bit :( not to enough to switch off subtitles in anime but enough to understand what they want and ask simple questions) and I spend some time in France when I was 12 so I understand a little bit of that too :)

message 23: by Anna (new)

Missdevora | 2142 comments Does anybody speak a lil bit italian? Every summer my city gets full of gorgeous italians and when I walk aroud they many times stop me to ask tipical touristy questions like "Bella! Dove si trova la piazza...?" or "Dove sono i negozi?" which I know it means after making an idiot of myself 'Beautiful! Where is the square...?" or "Where are the shops? and sometimes... really on rare occations on which I would like to keep talking they ask "Che fai stasera?" meaning "What are you doing tonight?" and what do I do? Nothing! I just smile, they smile and leave... Any suggestions for this summer???

English and French is cool, Val. So talk, talk, talk! :-)

message 29: by Missdevora (new)

And now that I saw the phrase again, it looks alike to how we say it in romanian 'Ce faci în seara asta?'

I actually switched into English version by the 4th book 'cause J.K. Rowling made up totally new world and new words which don't have (or at least they hadn't) Polish translation and what they came up with I really didn't like :( Thus me switching to original version

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Arushi wrote: "I should mention, i guess, I speak Hindi (as I am from India) and English, and constantly watching anime has taught me a teeny bit of Japanese. "

Or watching films too. I totally love the original Grudge, and Ring movies...not so much the american remake...was it Korean? I forgot.

message 32: by Cat (last edited May 29, 2012 06:51PM) (new)

Cat (shelfmotivatedbooks) | 157 comments Grudge & Ring movies are Japanese...much better IMHO.

I've definitely learned bits of Japanese from watching anime!

Every now and then I learn some things from my boss (who is Italian). So far, for insulting words in Italian (and I have no idea how this is spelled but) it sounds like "mosha" and it means limp you-know-what...

French is awesome Val.. I've been meaning to learn for forever. So totally share!!

I liked the Japanese version of the ring better too. The English one was not scary at all... but then the original tends to be better (with exceptions.. but still!!)

Maggie (lacr1mation) I took 3 years of French in high school. Yeah, the only thing I remember is how to ask where the library is. & I prolly couldn't spell it correctly. lol.
Ok, so I'm reading Hammered. (Iron Druid series.) There has been a phrase in a couple of the books that I "understand" but, would like a more literal translation. So, here's hoping you guys can help. :) "Shat kine". When looking up these words individually seems like it means "pooped a cow". You guys have any ideas? lol.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Mmmm. Well there is that quote from Hounded:

“Flidais clapped her hands in delight.
"Oh, I bet he nearly shat kine!"
That made me laugh - I hadn't heard that expression in a long, long time. I refrained from telling her that the modern expression would be "he had a cow", because I liked the original better.
"Yes, the kine he nearly shat would have fed several clans.”

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Don't worry Maggie, I barely remember any Spanish from college aside for ordering beer.

OK, coz of that I am adding the Iron Druid series to my TBR pile.

Considering what I am most obsessed with, I'll ask you this. Does my name have any meaning in Arabic?
And is there any single word that means the first light of the morning, or even light at dawn?

Karoly Negyesi Cow article in wikipedia: "The genitive plural of "cū" is "cȳna", which gave the now archaic English plural, and Scots plural, of "kine"."

Shat is simply "The preterite and past participle of shit are attested as shat, shit, or shitted" per wikipedia.

message 49: by Missdevora (new)

Missdevora | 2142 comments Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ wrote: "Don't worry Maggie, I barely remember any Spanish from college aside for ordering beer."

Well it's good that you remember a useful phrase, since beer is the most drinkable liquid in Spain, besides from water ;)

When I was in kindergarden I used to speak magyar/hungarian with the other kids, then in school I started french and year by year forgot hungarian(now I only remember a handful of words)

I started to learn english from the tv cartoons, but not started learning it at school until I was about 10 years old.
Two years later I moved to Spain and learned catalan and spanish(if you want to know sth in these 2, ask away) and started forgetting my french (5 years of it...man i feel bad now, I understand it but...).

I think that my brain doesn't want more than 4 languages taking residence.LOL!
