I based my decision on several things, a couple were, an edited sample 1000 words of my work was provided for free, so I could check the quality of work, and I could pay in installments.
Word of mouth counted for a lot.
I'm a poor struggling author after all.
The guidance they have given me is top notch, things I never considered and were missed by the previous editor.
Check them out, decide for yourself, but I'm happy.

www.sfep.org.uk/ as they had a directory showing editors' particular skills and areas of interest. I found Catherine Best to be excellent, and very much on my wave length. But as Mel says, they are busy people and you would need to book in advance.
For 'Quilt Detective' I'm going to be working with a local editor who is in our scrapbook group. She normally works on highly technical books. It'll be a bit of light relief for her, I hope.
