Ally (ally1604) | 58 comments I'm not normally a quitter, but I didn't join the summer challenge until the 14th August which was too late really, so after the book I'm reading I think I'm going to finish working on the summer challenge and focus on a reading plan for autumn instead. I'm going to aim for the full points in that one!

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments good luck Ally!!

I think I hit all my goals
- finished the challenge
- read books set in 10 different countries - I did 11
- not end up on the wall of shame (thank you sassy for saving my butt on a HTML coding error that would have put me there)
- and i got my pre-proposal written and approved for my dissertation (although, now i'm starting from scratch because of major methodology changes...) lol!

Well, I'm technically allowed to check out as many as I want...but checking out 50 from the library means I don't read as many of the ones I own, which is the problem. I mean, if I can't find books that'll work, that's one thing, but I know that I own books for at least 3/4 of the posted tasks so far. The library books are so shiny and enticing...no! I will be strong and primarily read my own books this season!

message 114: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments I don't think I own ANY books that I haven't read. I have this iron-clad policy--I MUST read all purchased books immediately. Of course, the same holds true for library books, which means library day is full of dithering over which book to pick up first--or second--or wait, how about that one.

That is supposed to be my policy too - however it is obviously not iron-clad! The pile continues to grow - I keep finding more books that I just HAVE to read. I have more books in my house than our little local library houses, and that is NOT counting my children's books!

Off to take another book out of my current pile - I hope.

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments It's driving me crazy waiting until Sept. 1. I have books in the house and I can't READ them? What kind of universe is this?

message 117: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments You can always get going on a book that is 500 pgs. or longer. You are allowed to read "less than half"--of those books before the challenge starts. :-)
Grab a FATSO! Hee Hee

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Donna Jo wrote: "It's driving me crazy waiting until Sept. 1. I have books in the house and I can't READ them? What kind of universe is this?"

Me, too! That's why I've been reading cheesy books I wouldn't want to use for any challenge. The other option, though, is read the ones you've got in your house and then find other ones to fit the tasks! :D

I'd start a 500pg+ book right now, but it's impossible for me to stop once I get deep into a book. It used to get me in so much trouble in school...

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments Reading a book in school got you into trouble??? *is shocked*

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Reading a book in school got you into trouble??? *is shocked*"

Well, reading AHEAD got me in trouble. I'd finish an entire book for a class that we were supposed to read in lit circle groups, so I wouldn't be able to discuss anything without spoilers lol

In seventh grade, my teacher had us listen to a novella on tape. In class. For a week. It was absolute torture. I finished the story in one period, so I was flipping through my textbook looking for other stories to read, and she came over and got mad at me. I stayed after class to explain, but she said it was more of a "you need to follow the rules to help keep others in line" sort of thing, even though she understood my problem. Geez, if she understood, why did she have her honors kids listening to a book on tape?! It was the only time I was actually mad at her, because otherwise she was one of my all-time favorite teachers.

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Speaking of 7th grade. I'll never forget my 7th grade teacher reading Chitty-Chitty, Bang Bang to us and then making Le Foodge at the end. I read that book to my kids now at school. My little migrant kids have never had fudge before.

That's me too! Hooked now on SRC and always looking for a book to fit some point task. I do plan to read more books I have on my shelf at home this challenge, so far I have one for almost all the tasks. I also hope to finish up at least 5 series I have on the go.

I know, I did do that but because I wasn't actively working towards a challenge I didn't read as much as I could have. I've got my reading plan ready for Fall though :)

message 128: by Ally (new)

Ally (ally1604) | 58 comments Ok, honestly? I didn't really comprehend the scale of this challenge until I did my reading plan...I'm currently on 58 books, which is more than my goal for the year lol, with 2 to fill plus the 20 point tasks! I am in awe of those of you that have completed challenges before, amazing achievement!

I have a full-time job and a 6 year old with autism and ADHD, however I do like a challenge and I'm quite willing to sit up until 3am reading (I do so often!) so I'm still going to go for it and try and complete all the tasks.

What have I let myself in for?! Haha I'm actually really excited to start and will try not to beat myself up if I don't get through them all! :)

Ally, if it is any consolation....most of us do not finish. For me, a lot of the fun is in finding the books I plan for the tasks. Of course, i do actually like the reading part, too.

I feel the same, I love reading but I've really enjoyed creating my reading plan :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments My goal for the year is to read 100 books. I was off by 8 books last year.

message 132: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments I've never finished the challenge either.
I'm a teacher--- and I bring home so many papers to grade and have to do lesson plans every week. Tons
of prep.
I love to read though, and make time to read every night.
But, I can't stay up until 3:00--- wish I could. I get up at 4:00 to prep for each day and then head to work and be there early for more prep and making copies on the copy machine (before the crowd comes in and you can't get to the copy machines). :-)

My goal for the Fall Challenge is to read half the books. I'll be happy if I can do that.

message 133: by Louise (new)

Louise This will be my first challenge. My goals for the challenge are :
1. Try to complete at least 2 tasks from the 5, 10, and 15 pt lists.
2. Aim to complete at least 1 big point task 20+.
3. Not buy any new books

message 134: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Okay, my official goals!

1. Finish (as always!)
2. Fewer than 20 library books (since I know for at least four tasks already none of the books I own will work)
3. More than 35 new authors (so I don't get stuck in a rut)
4. At least 5 "grown-up" books (for balance >_>)
5. Have fun :D (this shouldn't be too difficult)

message 135: by Kathy G. (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Definitely FUN!!!! :-)

message 136: by Candiss (last edited Aug 25, 2012 05:49PM) (new)

Candiss (tantara) The Fall challenge will be my first with this group.

I am often too goal-oriented and end up draining the fun out of challenges for myself. So my goals will be kept loose:

1. I am also involved in another (somewhat smaller but more theme-specific) challenge that cycles every 3/4 months. The next one will probably start sometime in September, as well. So I will be trying to get as many books as possible to cross over and fit more than one challenge, which I find adds another layer of strategy that I enjoy, even as I often find it frustrating. I will also be trying to get various group reads to fit in, as well.

2. I want to read as many books as I can from my home shelves. For my tentative plan so far, I've found that I can use an owned book for around 30 tasks! I'm sure I won't actually use all of them, due to cross-over intentions I mentioned in point #1, but I anticipate getting to dust off a healthy number of languishing titles.

3. I want to have fun! I have no serious hope of actually completing this challenge - I just don't read fast enough anymore - but I want to focus on enjoying what I read and getting less hung up on "needing" to finish tasks to collect points.

message 137: by Sassafrass (last edited Aug 25, 2012 12:31PM) (new)

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 891 comments Well, I'm celebrating my 1 year anniversary with the challenge! YAY!

1. stay off the wall of shame again. I had a bad time with the Spring 2012 challenge for some reason.

2. read at least 10 books I would never have read if it weren't for the challenge.

3. read at least 20 new authors (I had 33 new authors in the last challenge!)

4. buy no more than 5 new books (I want to use my already owned books or library books otherwise or kindle lending otherwise)

5. listen to at least 6 audiobooks

6. finish the challenge!

message 138: by Coralie (last edited Aug 25, 2012 05:35PM) (new)

Coralie My main aim is to finish the challenge in the last week. I hate finishing early as I wander around like a lost soul until the next challenge begins.
Other than that, I try to read a wide range of books and find new authors - not at all hard to do.

message 139: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments It's my first anniversary, too!
For the Fall challenge, I'm taking a different path. I have accumulated a lot of physical books, audiobooks and ebooks over the past year that keep getting pushed down the TBR list. Actually it's more than 100 books. I average 33 books for a challenge, so this time my main goal is to slot at least 27 of the books I own into challenge tasks, regardless of a task's point value. So far I've been doing really well fitting them in. So here are my goals:

1. Read at least 27 books from the physical TBR pile

2. Stay off the Wall of Shame (I managed it this time, but I still have one more post to make. Hope I don't mess it up!)

3. Read at least one book from Listopia's Best Books Ever list

4. Have fun and not obsess over how many points I have and how I will never finish a challenge -- or at least not until some day far in the future when I retire.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments I don't think I will ever retire from it. I am going on my third anniversary here and my 12th challenge.

message 141: by Sue (new)

Sue (suetinge) | 1579 comments This will be my 10th round and I have no plans on leaving.

Some goals for this round:
1. Finish - it would be the first time I ever have.
2. Read at least one book off the 1001 books list.
3. Stay off the Wall of Shame - I messed up a couple of times this round.
4. Don't buy any books specifically for the challenge - read books off my shelves, freebies for the Kindle and from the library.
5. Read at least 10 new-to-me authors.

message 142: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (m_sarah) | 60 comments Goals for my first real SRC challenge (as I signed in during August, I only tried to fit the books I read this month into existing tasks) :

1. Don't see the challenge as a pressure on reading more and more but as an opportunity to discover new books (especially the ones I would not have read otherwise) and to read more and more.
2. Hope that my 'kind-of' OCDs will allow me to stay off the Wall of Shame.
3. Try and not buy books for the challenge but use the ones from my TBR pile, borrow some at libraries/from friends, get others for my birthday or use free ones if I decide to get myself an ereader.
4. Try and use as many books originally written in French (or even, if I'm confident enough, in Italian) as I can.

I think that is about it. I will edit this message if I'm thinking of more reasons to enjoy the Fall Challenge. :)

message 143: by Bea (new)

Bea My goals for Fall SRC:

1. Stay off the Wall of Shame. I was on it a couple of times this season for silly reasons - miscalculating my points and mislabelling an author as a GR author. These were mistakes that I do not tend to make. For the Fall SRC, I will check and recheck totals when posting.

2. Enjoy my reading. Sometimes I get caught up in the pressure to make points - especially at the end. I will give myself permission to deviate from my plan if my planned book is not interesting to me when I reach for it.

3. Finish half the points, just because I like a goal to aim for.

message 144: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 526 comments I have decided to take a different approach to the challenge this next season. Usually I have this big stack of books that I want to read that I try to fit into the various tasks, of course with the most points possible. This time I'm going to make a game out the challenge by randomly selecting 3 challenges at a time (I have my own dice for this purpose!) then findng books that will fit and not worry about points. In this way the challenge will be a true challenge for me. My goal is to read at least 15 new authors to me and to have fun!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments I want to stay off the Wall of Shame and reach 250 points. I haven't broken 200 yet.

I haven't finished a SRC yet.

Also use books I already own and use library books more.

message 146: by mussolet (new)

mussolet (sovotchka) I have started late for the Summer, but I am pre-planning Fall.
If I can complete the Fall challenge, I will have met my goal of having read at least 50% of all the books on my shelves :).

message 147: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 358 comments I've got some big thick books to read for both my library and online bookgroups, and for a class. So I'm not going to have a goal of a large number of points. I would like to read some books that have been on my own bookshelves for far too long.

message 148: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments I always have the goal of beating my previous challenges points total. This does not usually happen. lol

Anyway, I got 200 points for the Summer challenge so my goal is to beat that. I am also going to try to get those points not only using 20+ point tasks...

message 149: by Valari (new)

Valari | 21 comments For the fall challenge my goals are to:

1. Double my points from the previous challenge. I'll have to reach at least 160 points to do that.

2. Read "Les Misérables" because I want to take it off my TBR once and for all :)

message 150: by Aleksandra (new)

Aleksandra (aleksandrakonwa) | 752 comments I would love to beat my highest "score" this time, so I think in Fall Challenge it must be more then 450 points :)
