Mariya wrote: "what is this bingo challenge that I have seen mentioned in several discussions?"It is a challenge where teams of readers read a particular genre or shelf that has been predetermined by a moderator. Once the team has completed that, the space is considered "covered." The first team to "Bingo" vertically, diagonally, or horizontally wins the challenge.
The moderator of the challenge has grids of the shelves or genre so the challenge readers can cover the shelves just like a bingo card.
Amended: Original Post #283. Summer is important to me because my mother was born in June and was married in August. When she died suddenly a few years back, I took many of her books. They've sat on my shelves now almost 6 years and it looks like I'll be able to work more of her books in the challenge.
8. Using my existing owned books without buying any this Summer.
Mariya wrote: "what is this bingo challenge that I have seen mentioned in several discussions?"The one Meghan and I are talking about, specifically, is the one hosted on the SOS (Serious Overload of Series) group. It's primarily Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy, but any genre book found on the specific Good Reads shelf is acceptable -- though the mod added a minimum page requirement the last round. A new shelf is called every weekend until a team declares bingo.
It's become quiet popular -- the first game had 25 players, the most recent had 75.
the m/m group just started doing it a few months ago as well...right now we have 8 normal teams, and 3 super-speedy teams...the SS get 2 categories a week (M and F), the regular just 1 on Friday
Christina and Anne, thank you for taking the time to explain that; that sounds like a really fun challenge.
My goal is just to participate this time. Last challenge got away from me and I was never able to post anything. I would like to keep up a little bit better this time.

I am doing my first one in The Crazy Challenge Connection and it has been fun. I try to pick books that will work for one the SRC Tasks, too.
I'm going to try to finish again, but do have a vacation planned so I'm not sure if I'll pull it off. I'd also like to read at least 5 big books. I'm already halfway through three since I was able to get started early. That definitely helps!
1. Since I haven't managed to finish the last two challenges because of work, I'm really hoping I can finish this one! I'm counting on being able to read during my vacation and while my kids are at camp this summer.2. Read the Booker longlist after it is announced in July (I do this every year).
I've decided to 1) read at least 10% as big books; 2) read from at least two genres I don't normally read much in; and 3) try to do a better job writing reviews of what I read. I always have good intentions.
Here are mine.1. To get at least 55% of all points.
2. To double-check everything before I post (task requirements, my math) and not end up on the "Wall of Shame"
3. Read at least 15 new-to-me authors.
4. Use as many books that I already have on hand as possible.
5. Have fun!
Mariya wrote: "Christina and Anne, thank you for taking the time to explain that; that sounds like a really fun challenge."You're welcome! :) Oh, it is. Especially once teams start getting 4-in-a-row. :D
1. Finish the challenge (a girl can dream, right?) ;)2. Get at least 400 points (my highest was 395 in the winter challenge & I'd really love to top that!)
3. Read some of the almost-300 books I own and haven't read!!!
4. Do some "professional" (education-related) reading
5. Make more use of my library instead of buying more books! (I borrowed 5 books last week + one interlibrary loan book in anticipation of beginning the summer challenge!)
Good luck to us all in meeting our goals. :)
Like jenbunny, my goal this time is just to participate! I had a baby in February and so the spring challenge completely got away from me. I did actually manage to read 3 whole books during that time (haha), but I never managed to get on here and post my points. My secondary goal is not to buy or check out any library books for this challenge. I have 200+ books here at home that I have never read. Some of them are books I bought at a library sale last year, most of them are books my husband brought to our marriage (he has a masters in English, so he came with A LOT of books!).
Only three goals for me!1. Get at least 750 points (I did 690 in this last challenge which was 63%; 750 in this challenge will take me to about 70%)
2. Complete all 30 and 20 point tasks
3. Don't end up in the ?s/problems thread
Asho, I wish my husband came with books; unfortunately, I married a non-reader lol. At least we don't have fights over books - he stays away from my bookshelves.
Dee wrote: "i think the new edition of overdrive that just came out let's you return books early from it for ebook and audiobooks - I know that was a huge pet peeve of mine"From what I've read, you can only turn in the ebooks early because it's through Amazon. I wish you could return audiobooks early. I've had to let several go because I was already at my limit when I was notified they were available.
Ms Anderson wrote: "Those sound really fun! I should see if there are any YA ones when I get home..."Mrs. A, please let me know if you find one. Sounds like a lot of fun!
Three cheeers for all of you who have resolved to stay out of the ?/problems thread! As the "readerboard moderator" this time around, I would LOVE to see that thread stay empty!

Love this topic. I have a series of goals for each challenge:1. Claim at least half the total points.
2. Read at least one classic (generally I've been working on the Modern Library's 100 books for the 20th century list, but sometimes I go with others).
3. Read at least one book for the Best Books Ever list on Listopia.
4. Read books from the physical TBR pile in my home. This is the hardest for me.
this is the update to overdrive that just went out the other day - but it only works for MP3 audiobooks, not WMA onesChris wrote: "Dee wrote: "i think the new edition of overdrive that just came out let's you return books early from it for ebook and audiobooks - I know that was a huge pet peeve of mine"

This is one of my ongoing goals...glad you provided instructions on how to do it! LOL
I finally made a private goal of mine! ;-} I get to create a 20 Point Task! Thank you to everyone who voted on my review. Hugs and kisses.
I aim for about 300 points per challenge. I'd like to read about 20 books per challenge. I have yet to make it on the dreaded "wall of shame" and will be heartbroken when I do(I'm participating in a reading challenge, I need to read the descriptions carefully!), so I aim to stay clear of that. I also try to fit in as much "mood" reading as I can. I often go to the library and check out a zillion books that I've never heard of before just because they meet a requirement.
Anne (Booklady) wrote: "I finally made a private goal of mine! ;-} I get to create a 20 Point Task! Thank you to everyone who voted on my review. Hugs and kisses."
Yay, Anne! Looking forward to your task.
For those who want to stay out of the problem thread, I find it helps to read all of the help threads and keep up to date with the problem thread to avoid the pitfalls others are falling in.
My goal is to shorten my TBR list by 15 books and try to make sure a majority of those 15 are books I already own. I really have no room left for more books in my apartment! (Granted, the Kindle helps with this....)
My goal is always to finish the challenge while enjoying myself. I also aim to stay out of the problem thread (successful so far except for once during the Fall 2011 season I think... will continue to try to be careful!).I think I will also make it my goal to discover at least two new authors I would like to read more of, every season.

Thank you ;-P. It is being looked at by all three mods now. Hopefully it will be up Sunday.
My goals are to get at least 40-50% of the points (although I'll try for 100%) and to be on the Wall of Shame only twice (I know me, it'll be more than once, LOL). Another goal is to use as many of my TBR titles in this challenge as possible.
This will be my second challenge season. I ended up with 340 for Spring and am going to aim for 500 this time! I had a lot going on last quarter and hope to have more time this go 'round.
To finish the books I have purchased or been given by friends, so they can stop asking me how they were. :) Also, I'd like to try to complete the challenge. :)
The Summer 2012 challenge will be my fifth challenge I've participated in, and I am bound and determined to break 250 points! I start off each challenge really strong, then my life gets in the way, and before I know it, I have only claimed a few points. So this time, I'm buckling down, reading some new authors, and am going to break my highest point score.
My goals for Summer 2012:1. Finish the challenge.
2. Read at least 20 books that I actually own.
3. Read 5 or more books that are over 500 pages.
4. Have fun!
My goals are!
1) finish the challenge by the early cut of date.
2) fit most of my tasks with ARC I need to do reviews on
3) finish at least 1 series
4) avoid the wall of shame
5) don't forget to post reviews!

We are about halfway through the challenge! How is everyone doing towards their personal goals?I just reached halfway in my points collection. The non-fiction is still an issue though
I have completed #4 (read at least 3 new authors). I have read 9 new authors so far but only 2 have been GR authors.#5 (read more TBR than I add to TBR) has failed. I started with 718 books on TBR and now have 749!
I'm on track to do at least half the points. I've read one classic (but gave up on another). And I've read three whole books (!!) from my physical TBR pile, with about three more planned. I'm winnowing out the tasks that I know I won't get to. So far, not too bad.
I'm doing pretty well, but I haven't made much of a dent on my personal bookshelves...the library is so tempting! I've read some really great books so far, though, and added a few others to my list. I've done better with "reading for fun" rather than just sticking to my original reading list, too, which has been nice. Right now I'm moving backwards through the tasks, so back to the books! Good luck, everyone! <3
So far, I've read five big books, am in the middle of #6, and am waiting for #7 from the library for my goal of 10% big books. I've managed to do reviews (or at least comments) on better than half the books I've claimed. And have read my two books in mostly unread genres--Westerns and Essays.I'm a little better than half way finished with the whole challenge and have most of the two book tasks half done.
So I am pretty on track.
I'm on target with my points, haven't been on the wall of shame, and should surpass my new-to-me authors goal. I'm doing pretty well with using books I've got on hand and am having fun with most of them.
