titter ye not. For most of the England (see map at http://adlib.everysite.co.uk/resource... ) farmers have to calculate that and mustn't exceed a certain amount per acre.
Thanks to EU nitrate regulations, because of worries there might be liver damage from nitrate poisoning (in case you worried, they haven't even found any on workers in fertiliser factories! )

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Great review, Jim. It made me wish I hadn't downloaded it already, just so that I could download it again!

That's the problem with ebooks, with paperbacks you could show approval by buying a score of them and giving them to your family, friends, passing strangers etc :-)

I know. I'm still surprised that we can't give e-books as a gift through amazon UK, like they can in the US. It would make the whole review copies thing so much easier and a lot more secure for us.

Jim | 21813 comments I'm wondering whether Tallis ought to have an author thread of his own, so I'm not constantly having to break off from sensible discussions to cope with his maundering!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Looks like the lady could do with a visit from Benor to cheer her up.

message 4207: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments John Singer Sargent, interesting, his 'In a Levantine Port' looks a bit like some of our Rosemary's work

But you're right, she does need something.
Syrup of figs for a start :-)
I'll mention her to him ;-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I see what you mean about the Levantine Port - definitely a bit Rosemary-esque.

Maybe Tallis could cheer her up with a verse or two as well. Something to take her mind off the syrup of figs.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Last thing she needs is syrup of figs wearing that outfit.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Firstly very happy to be compared to JSS :)

Then a little worried to be threatened with syrup of figs. Then reread the posts properly!

Well when I saw the picture I did a google image search to see who it was by, looked at his other stuff to see if there was anything I could use and saw the levantine one and was immediately reminded of one of your paintings

The syrup of figs is a mere detail

message 4212: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments The syrup of figs just sort of slipped out, as you might say?

message 4213: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Always gets back to poop in Jim's thread, doesn't it?

I blame David.

message 4214: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments I always blame David
But here is the truth of the entire tale

message 4215: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Hum. A bald and unconvincing narrative in need of much more detail, in my view.

Who, for example, got the task of rubbing down the naked young ladies? And was there a waiting list for the job?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Benor did, of course. With some help from Tallis, I expect.

message 4217: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Feel free to blame me, I'm well used to it by now.

I only popped in to read the latest Tallis. Good one :~)

A grim duty, sternly done, without fuss or frivolity

Or so I was informed by the participants.
I merely note the expressions on the faces of the ladies in the painting

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Wistful, I thought. With the merest whiff of paranoia.

something along those lines anyway

apropos of nothing have you thought of doing more portrait work? I'm sure Will will be available with a sponge and a bucket of hot water if needed

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I would offer to pose, but I think it would take Rubens to face the task of painting me...

Not like this, I hasten to add...

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Now there's a lady who looks like she's suffering from an application of syrup of figs. Fantastic figure though!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Thats exactly what I thought, Rosemary. :)

message 4224: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments and not a hot water bottle in sight notice! They grow tough in the Dublin area obviously!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Although to be fair she could have one under each buttock. If too hot might in fact explain the somewhat pained expression

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments More likely due to too many 'cockles and mussels, alive, alive-o'.

message 4227: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments I assumed she was just trying to disassociate herself from the wallpaper

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Thats positively tasteful for Dublin.

Jim | 21813 comments Gingerlily - Mistress Lantern wrote: "Thats positively tasteful for Dublin."

I suspect that my problem is that the world of Tallis and Benor takes tasteful to a level lesser works cannot even aspire to reach :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments And then they have Mutt to bring them down to earth again.

Jim | 21813 comments When I was 16 I bought myself a green cord jacket. Cost me a fiver. My grandfather saw it, liked it and bought himself one.
Turned up at the local auction mart wearing that and a pair of trousers and shirt with no tie and his mates called him a bluidy hippy :-)

message 4241: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments And a new Port Naain Intelligencer story is out today!

Tomb-yard Follies

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tomb-yard-Fol...

Mapping an old family graveyard was a technically complicated job Benor expected would take him some time. But then he hadn’t allowed for getting caught up in a world of intrigue, vengeance, and arbitrary justice...

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Your publishing rate is increasing, Jim. Have you got Patterson on board ;-)

Good luck with it.

Jim | 21813 comments I've got a first, a book with a lower Amazon best sellers rank in the US than the UK!

Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #255,842 Paid in Kindle Store UK (which is hardly scintillating)
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #226,428 Paid in Kindle Store US which is about as good as I ever get in the US
