If you’re looking for some entertaining short stories to dip into, I can recommend this book.
But don’t blame me if you read the whole book in one sitting the way I did.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Nice! :-) I must get these now. I have the other lot and I am looking forward to reading them in the car on the way to Scotland.

Jim | 21813 comments Do what Desley does and read them aloud, it might keep McMini occupied ;-)
If the Cats can cope with it, he surely can

message 5014: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Mwahahahargh! He's a bit of a graphic novel man at the moment. I can give it a go though. McOther might not like it though. The reading aloud, I mean.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments How can you read in the car? It would make me sick.

Plus I’m the driver (as OH can’t see)

message 5016: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments I'm somebody who cannot read in the car either, but because other half is travel sick, she has to drive so I navigate

message 5017: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Me too. I can read on a train to an extent, but cars and coaches are a no-no.

As long as it doesn't get in the way of the train you're ok.

Jim | 21813 comments Given the way Amazon is tightening up on reviews I was surprised to get an American one
Tallis Steelyard: Six men in a boat.

A poet...and a delightful rogue

Tallis Steelyard is a poet with champagne tastes on a beer budget. Chased out of town, and into the bay, by irate creditors, he's rescued by a passing boat and given the opportunity to become a part of the crew. Thereafter follow a series of adventures, many funny, before Tallis can finally return home again.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and recommend it highly!

Jim | 21813 comments I was well chuffed
Just came out of nowhere. Given how I've barely sold half a dozen copies in the US, I wasn't expecting anything :-)

Jim | 21813 comments Not one novella but two!

The first is
Swimming for Profit and Pleasure

Swimming for Profit and Pleasure (The Port Naain Intelligencer) by Jim Webster

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

Benor learns a new craft, joins the second hand book trade, attempts to rescue a friend and awakens a terror from the deep. Meddling in the affairs of mages is unwise, even if they have been assumed to be dead for centuries.

The second is
The Plight of the Lady Gingerlily:

The Plight of the Lady Gingerlily (The Port Naain Intelligencer) by Jim Webster

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

No good deed goes unpunished. To help make ends meet, Benor takes on a few small jobs, to find a lost husband, to vet potential suitors for two young ladies, and to find a tenant for an empty house. He began to feel that things were getting out of hand when somebody attempted to drown him

The second novella was the result of a cunning plan. To provide the anecdotes for a blog tour to promote the first novella, I'd get people to send me pictures and I'd do a Benor short story to go with each.
The minute the first two pictures arrived it was obvious that they were the beginning and the end of a novella, and a certain person, not to be named, sent several more, which sort of fitted beautifully in the middle.
So this novella is a tribute to the Lady Gingerlily :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments They might have been deleted during the writing of the book....

message 5030: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments That remains a possibility. I have noticed any missing, but then you don't know what you've got til it's gone

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments And they've put up a parking lot.

message 5032: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments one thing Port Naain doesn't have, no parking lots

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments It must be paradise!

message 5034: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments It has some sewers as well!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments What do they sew?

Swimming for Profit and Pleasure (The Port Naain Intelligencer) by Jim Webster

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent Benor Mystery.

The tale starts with a description of squid autopsy procedures.
Then, we find out how Benor learns the skill of deep sea diving, and running a bookshop.
The story soon develops into a ‘Benor needs to find and rescue a friend’ theme.
Luckily, Kara Halon (who works for The Purveyors of Magic) is on hand and joins him for a swim with a difference.
Great stuff...
