Listener
Prologue
You know that expression, the one that goes, “That’s music to my ears!” Well, everything is music to my ears. When I look at someone, I hear the “music” of his or her minds. It literally sounds like a song in my head. Everyone’s can vary, depending on their mood, or their intentions, or even just their thoughts.
I am not a psychic, nor a mind reader. I call myself a “listener” because that’s what I do. I listen.
My name is Raven Evandale. I am alone.
Ch. 1
I opened my eyes, slowly coming back from dreamland into reality. Mom’s familiar mind music, chimes that go up and down and up and down, wakes me almost every morning, as she gets up and gets coffee.
I stretched and groaned. I hate mornings. I hate people, so anytime when I have to interact with others, I hate.
I threw back the covers and hopped out of bed, gazing around at my room. It’s done in varying shades of purple and white, a normal room for an abnormal 14 year-old.
That’s the story of my life. Normal life. Abnormal me.
After I got dressed, I raced down the stairs, taking them two at a time. I walked through the living room and into the kitchen.
I had been paying attention to Mom’s mind’s music as I prepared for school, so I knew she was in a good mood. If all went well, it would be a pleasant morning.
“Good morning, Raven.” Mom said and smiled at me. She was drinking her “pick me up” aka, coffee.
“Morning, Mom.” I tried to say, but I yawned halfway through, so it sounded like, Mmmmmmooom.
“Did you stay up reading again last night? “ Mom asked, inquisitive as ever. When you were a single mom with only one child, you tended to be a bit over protective.
“No, Mom. I’m just tired. It is morning, you know. “ I smiled. Mom was such a worrywart. I loved her for it.
“Alright, honey. You know how worried I get…” she trailed off.
“I know Mom, I know!” I said, laughing. “You don’t need to tell me.”
She joined in, and we laughed together for a moment. It was nice. A nice change. We didn’t laugh much, at least not with each other.
She glanced at the clock, so I looked too. Shoot. I had 3 minutes to run the 5 blocks to school.
“Bye, Mom!” I shrieked as I grabbed a granola bar, picked up my messenger bag and dashed to school. If I was late to Algebra II, I was toast. Burnt toast.
Two and a half minutes later, I dashed through the school doors. Normally, I would stop by my locker, but luckily I had taken home my stuff for my 1st period class yesterday, so it was all in my bag.
I ran down the hallway, praying as hard as I could that Mr. Gonzales, the principal, wasn’t about to walk out of his office and give me a detention.
I turned the corner. Of course, Classroom 323, where I had Algebra II, was as far away from the front doors as physically possible.
Passing a trash can, I dumped my granola bar wrapper in, flying through the doors into class.
Right as I took my seat, the bell rang. I barely made it.
Ms. Brighton, my teacher, noticed this also.
“Tsk, tsk Miss Evandale,” she said. “That was a close one.”
Of course, she had to call me out. Now every person in the room was going to turn around and look at me. Great. Somehow, even though I sat in the very last row of the room, they all managed to stare.
