with the take up of kindle unlimited by so many people, does the free book as a means of promotion have any significance any longer?
faced with the choice of a free book or an unlimited one I always take the unlimited. it costs me nothing still but gives the author something for their trouble!

That is an interesting point, Charlie, I'd like to think that those who are signed up to kindle unlimited would rather use that to give something towards the author.
I'm going to shamelessly plug it in my next post but the book I uploaded Thursday has had one KU download as opposed to 63 free. I'm perfectly fine with this as I am not looking for money, this is just something I enjoy doing in my spare time and I'm hoping for reviews and feedback. I can't seem to find any numbers on how many subscribers are out there, but perhaps they aren't interested in books that are going free at the time. Any thoughts on the matter?

gavin, I have one golden rule, no free books! I have never seen the point myself. I set my price and stick to it.
subscribers to unlimited, well as you may have noted, amazon are throwing money at authors to subscribe to unlimited so I'd assume that its a lack of authors rather than sign-ups that's a problem.
I once pointed out to someone who was selling on amazon for $0.99 that if he put his books into unlimited he'd get far more than the $0.35 cents commission he was getting from a sale, and that he would get higher rankings and nil returns. he saw the light.
so no there are no reports on subscribers but from my own sales I'd say as many are now using koll as are buying now.

oh and gavin, if you post your book cover instead of all those links, the cover will take readers to your book on GR and thence onto their own particular country/ amazon sales point.

To be honest I wanted to charge 99c/99p etc for the book because its, a) my first attempt, b) amazon wouldn't let me offer it for free, and c) I'm new to all this and don't have a clue what i am doing. But others advised me that setting such a low price point might make potential readers weary that there was no quality, so I stuck it at $2.99/£1.99 and then used the 5 day free promotion. Like i said, complete newbie here and I'm not expecting big money to suddenly come my way.
I am enrolled in kindle select, and would be thrilled at people lending it, but only one person has been interested in doing so this early in the game.

Out of curiosity how long has your book(s) been enrolled in kindle select? And are you entirely against using free promotions?

I put all my books in select and unlimited right from 2.5 years ago when I first self-pubbed. I now find that my sales to loans ratio is around 50-50.

yes 100% against free books, I sell at between £3 to $4.5 which is still pretty cheap in my opinion. it helps to recover my artwork costs if nothing else.
also use the community posts in the reports section to learn more about using amazon. its full of good advice.

I've used a basic placeholder cover whilst the person I've contacted for a cover gets through their current workload, so I don't currently have any real costs to recover, but I think that is a fair price point you're aiming for.

thirty five or six to date. I have up to now pubbed one each month but now I'm cutting back to every two months because sales have dropped lately.
I pay £88 per book for cover and setting up text. so I too don't expect a profit overall, but its nice too recover something.

nope, my books are normally 100 pages long, 35000 words. I usually have the next one in my head while writing the previous one. I'm also retired so this is like my interest now. I write for about three hours a day but not every day, and usually when I'm online with my group on GR.
