'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Richard, another warm welcome to the group, I am sure you will find lots here to read and to talk about.

message 2602: by Elizabeth S (new)

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Welcome, Richard. Sounds like you have a wide variety of historical interests, as well as some great philosophies about teaching. I hope you enjoy reading and discussing books and history with us.

message 2603: by Richard (new)

Richard Munro | 15 comments The Quest for God: A Personal Pilgrimage is a book i was just re-reading. I often quote it with my catechists. Paul Johnson of course is a well-known historian so he references history and art often in this book.

Richard Munro | 15 comments THanks for the info...I think I have the add book author down.

message 2607: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Richard, your posts should look like the one in the example above. You have the book cover but need the author. When you add the cover immediately go back into the add feature and click on the author tab, repeating the process to add author photo (when available) and author link )always. It should look like this:

The Quest for God A Personal Pilgrimage by Paul Johnson Paul Johnson Paul Johnson

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900 by Andrew Roberts Andrew Roberts

As well, there is a thread for 'what is everybody reading now' where you should move and place this particular post. It can be located here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

You'll get the hang of the feature I am sure. Thanks for your posts.

Bryan Craig I hearty welcome to Joe, Nicole, and Richard. I'm glad you found us here and I do hope you find some good books and good discussions!

message 2611: by Rev (new)

Rev Gary Hello everyone. I am a Lutheran Pastor whose addiction is reading. Sometimes it is hard to squeeze time. I love historical novels, cChristian fiction, and good old mystery novels. Spend my time on the treadmill with a book. Listen to audio books while driving or walking the dog.

message 2612: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Welcome Rev ~ Great nickname considering your vocation. If you are a reading addict with a love for history you found the right group! We are glad to have you and am sure with your interests you will find plenty here to explore and discuss.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how books you mention should look:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Rebecca Skloot Rebecca Skloot

Thank you Alisa for helping out Rev.

Rev, thank you for introducing yourself. One of our guidelines for all new group members is that they introduce themselves. Your background is interesting and we have folders on religion as well as historical fiction which you have indicated is one of your favorite genres.

We also have an audio book section and currently we are listening to Wolf Hall.

message 2617: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Hi everyone! I wish I could say I've read a lot of historical books, but I haven't. I seem to pick books that are not very interesting, or read like a textbook. I'm hoping that I can find some interesting suggestions here. I do love history though, and The History Channel is my favorite station! The areas I'm most interested in are British history (especially from the Plantagent era to Victorian), American Revolution era and I am getting more and more interested in Chinese history (as it is a small part of my heritage). I hope to find some great books to read!

message 2618: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Hello Shell's Bells! Welcome, we are glad to have you. A love of history and curiousity about what other history lovers read and enjoy will get you far in this group so please look around and join in any of the conversations. It's a friendly group.

Bryan Craig Welcome, Shell's Bells, glad you found us.

message 2623: by Carol (new)

Carol Lea Hello all--My name is Carol Lea Clark, and I'm an English professor at the Univ. of Texas at El Paso. However, I've crossed over to the history camp in terms of interests. I'm been trying to learn more about a little known bit of history--the American Navy's 1848 expedition to explore the Dead Sea and the Jordan River. I learned about the expedition while I was a Fulbright Scholar in Jordan. I was pleased to see that the group has been reading a history of James Polk, who was president during the period of the expedition, and I've been reading your comments about the book.

message 2624: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Welcome, Carol. Glad you could join us.

message 2628: by Ioana (new)

Ioana | 0 comments Hello from NJ :)
I love reading, but unfortunately I do not have a lot of time for it, just my hour long commute. I am already getting great ideas of books to read (thanks, I love your format which includes the link to the GR listing), although my list does not need any more additions. I think I am already set for life.

I did not pay much attention to those history classes in high school, but I now realize I should have. Reading history books (and a lot of HF, I admit) is the next best thing. Actually, better than any history high school class :)

With my crazy daily schedule it will be hard to commit to monthly reads (what takes you week to read, takes me a month, if not longer), but I will enjoy your comments and will participate as much as I can.

Actually, I think all of us spend more time behind than on-pace. :)

I never enjoy talking about myself so this introduction will be short. As I only have time to read two books a month I want to make sure they are worth the effort. My favorite book in the last year was The Guns of August.

The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman .

I look forward to speaking with everyone in the coming months.

Max, you did great but there were a few authors that should be cited:

Here they are:

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Hermann Schreyer - (no photo which is surprising)

William Shakespeare William Shakespeare

Peter Ackroyd Peter Ackroyd

Geoffrey Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer

Good job otherwise. Did you enjoy the retelling of the Canterbury Tales that Ackroyd did or do you like the original pure text.

The Canterbury Tales A Retelling by Peter Ackroyd by Geoffrey Chaucer Peter Ackroyd Peter Ackroyd originally by Geoffrey Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer

message 2641: by Max (new)

Max I think I preferred Ackroyd's retelling. You can appreciate the text better in a more accessible prose without any lose to the elegance of the original text.

Thanks for the kind welcomes, everyone. :)

Max Thanks Alisa, and thank you Elizabeth. Nice to meet you too, haha. Yes, there is a lot of pressure for an 18 year old these days, but I'm willing to try my best! :)

See you around,

message 2645: by Jim (new)

Jim | 117 comments Hi,

I read range of fiction and non-fiction, particularly history and 20th century classics. I'm also trying to improve my French which is great excuse to re-read the Harry Potter series and teen fiction that my small but growing vocabulary has a chance of handling.

I'm in my 40s and live in Canada. Canadian history's probably the staple of what I read, though I often read overviews of world and ancient history: Recently finished a short book on Roman Civilization and another on the History of Islam. A book I particularly enjoyed in the last couple of years was Barbara Ehrenreich's Dancing in the Streets: A History of Collective Joy.

Looking forward to reading posts and seeing what people recommend!

I found Goethe's more popular page and picture, Bentley. I think most people don't use his full name and use the shortened 'Johann Wolfgang von Goethe' instead:
