Bryan Craig Welcome, Bob. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

City of the Century The Epic of Chicago and the Making of America by Donald L. Miller Donald L. Miller

A Splendid Exchange How Trade Shaped the World from Prehistory to Today by William J. Bernstein William J. Bernstein

Destiny Disrupted A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes by Tamim Ansary Tamim Ansary

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

And our guidelines:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.

Welcome Barbara, Geoff, and Bob. Please familiarize yourself with the rules and guidelines. I can see that the assisting moderators have all posted helpful links.

Please be mindful that when citing a book; always post three parts: the bookcover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

Krystal (queenravenclaw) Hi my name is Queenravenclaw and I am a huge fan of historical fiction. My love for historical fiction all started in 6 grade were I read my first Dear Canada book. Since then my love for history has grown into fasicating times in history. I've read alot about the Romanov family one of my faves! I've read stuff about Italy.(Olimpia the women pope),I have read stuff about Marie Antoinette and seen the movie come on who hasn't if your historical fantatic reader? I have read way to much on England's history the Tudor Era has to be one of the most fasicnating things in history. I have read about my beautiful Croatia and it's wars. I am currently in a history class in college. I have read alot on WWI and WWII for school and for pleasure. There is just way too much historical fiction to get lost in. The one topic i have yet to explore and will now get a chance thanks to Goodreads is the Salem Witch Trials! I can't really say what my favourite is but since I have read alot on England even tho I have no family roots there it's just a really cool and interesting country. I hope to be able to learn more about history while im in this group.

Krystal, make sure you post the books as Aussie Rick pointed out in the guidelines above. Your book should look like this:

With Nothing But Our Courage The Loyalist Diary of Mary MacDonald, Johnstown, Quebec, 1783 (Dear Canada) by Karleen Bradford Karleen Bradford Karleen Bradford

It should always display the book cover, author photo (when available) and author link. You'll get the hang of it.
Thanks.

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Welcome Krystal/Queenravenclaw. Glad you found us.

I was going to point you towards a Canadian history thread where you could post some of those books you mention. But I couldn't find one! I'll check with Bentley and see if I just missed it or if we need to create one. For now, please feel free to mention books either in the "What is Everybody Reading Now" thread or the off-topic thread.

Thanks for sharing books you've enjoyed.

John Walton | 4 comments Hello all, I'm John. I enjoy history, though it is only a portion of my reading interests. I particularly enjoy US history circa 1850-1900.
Civil war topics are of interest, more so when they are of personal vantage points rather than military detail.
I would appreciate book recommendations on the history of the Chicago political machine.

message 2414: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

message 2417: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) John, good first effort on citing the book. You got the cover right, remember to also add the author link, it should look like this:
Lee by Charles Flood Charles Flood
It is always book cover, followed by author photo (when available) and author link (always.)
You should post your suggestion in one of the Civil War threads, the best one probably here ~

Bob | 8 comments John wrote: "Hello all, I'm John. ... I would appreciate book recommendations on the history of the Chicago political machine...."

John, I can strongly recommend the following:

City of the Century: The Epic of Chicago and the Making of America City of the Century The Epic of Chicago and the Making of America by Donald L. Miller Donald L. Miller

It's a very interesting history of Chicago during the 1800s. Although the book's focus is much broader than machine politics, it has at least one chapter on politics, which discusses the pro-union mayor (forget his name) who was in office in the 1880s.
Happy reading,
Bob

Recently started reading Thabo Mbeki and the Battle for the Soul of the ANC by William Mervin Gumede which is about the recouperation of ANC in power in post-apartheid South Africa.

I'm a bit of a cyber derelict. Currently listening to a webcast of an otr episode of Dana Andrew's I Was a Communist for the FBI - other tabs open are my hotmail page, this page, this forum's Guidelines, my facebook page, 3 tabs from WhatIfSports, and the last tab is a google search of Elizabeth Taylor.

It was probably inevitable that I'd find this site. I've been using different FB apps to catalog my books and there must have been some on a Goodreads page that linked me to here. Looks like a good group, and I'm looking forward to participating.
