Hello Bev,

We have a lot of folks who like military history (like Aussie Rick our assisting moderator) so I believe you also will be right at home. If you like military history, there is a great crew of readers and folks who like that genre.

A couple things to help you get started with The History Book Club. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

The citations have three parts: (bookcover always when available - it usually is except for older books), (author's photo when available) and always (the author's link) - author's name in linkable text.

Here is a sample:

My Early Life 1874-1904 by Winston S. Churchill by Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill

I also have added some other helpful links including the guidelines, orientation, etc.

Notetaker | 126 comments Hello History Book Club,

My pen name is “Notetaker” simply because that is a good descriptor of me.
Farming and Agricultural related businesses is how I make my living in the Rice growing flatlands of Eastern Arkansas.
History, Biographies, Military History, Persuasion, Negotiation, Diplomacy, Architecture and Psychology all catch my interest.
Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee biographies and related books take up a large section on my bookshelf.
I enjoy reading almost anything to do with Sales, Marketing, Branding and Business Strategy.
I also subscribe to CD Book Summaries to cram even more books in that are not on my reading list.
My favorite magazines are Harvard Business Review, Selling Power, Smithsonian, Discover and Scientific American. Hobbies are Cowboy plinking and fishing.
If I could start all over again, instead of a Farmer, I might be an “Architectural Historian,” probably would be unemployed though.
I look forward to reading and commenting with you.

Notetaker

Hello Notetaker,

Do you have a first name that we could call you without giving away any personal details - like George, Tom, Mary?

We do not have a thread on farming or agricultural matters but if you are interested in history you have come to the right spot.

Notetaker | 126 comments Thank You all, Alisa, Terri for the warm greeting.

Terri, You will be glad to know that on the front bumper of my vehicle is a license plate that says, "Beef, it's what's for Dinner."

On the back bumper of course is a bumper sticker that says, "Got Rice" to support the Rice Industry.

message 2177: by Terri (last edited Jan 24, 2011 02:11PM) (new)

Terri LOL! Well done on the marketing of beef. :-D
Okay, seeing as we are revealing stickers....we have a sticker on the back window of our vehicle 'Nothing Beats Beef'. :-)

Unfortunately. No rice stickers. But I have a 20kg bag of the stuff in the larder. Product of Thailand. Yikes!

Elizabeth,
I like the quote on Fish,,, however, it will not work well here in the Mississippi River Delta, we have large Catfish farms.
I will make sure that my Salt Water fish was not Farmed.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Randy, I spent several years in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Valley in California - huge rice growing area. Can't imagine eating rice grown outside the US.

The Coffee, Tea and Conversation folder and there is a community room where you can discuss all off topic conversations.

Hello Rose,

Glad you are enjoying your time on Goodreads. We take our citations seriously here as Aussie Rick has pointed out. However, I noticed that two of the authors did not get their due with a proper author citation so here they are:

Ken Burns Ken Burns

and

Edmund Morris Edmund Morris

Have fun.

Brian Storms | 2 comments Hello History Book afficionados!
My name is Brian, I live in Northern California and hail originally from an area with quite a deeper history, Maryland. I am not ashamed to say that my first taste of historical fiction was Chesapeake by Michener, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, though I have yet to read another of his.
I joined this book club primarily to receive recommendations for new books to read. I love historical fiction or non-fiction that tells a story that keeps your attention. I love sharing my own thoughts on books and will be sure to throw them towards this group when they seem relevant.

Thanks!

Thank you Aussie Rick for giving Brian helpful links to our rules and guidelines. Brian, we welcome you but please take the time to learn how to do the citations for the group because we have one format which we follow. Aussie Rick was kind enough to assist and help you.

You have moved far from Maryland but both Maryland and Northern California have its beautiful spots. You will find that you will get out of this group what you put into it. You will get as many recommendations as you ask for and more. We have an active moderation team but make sure when they pop in and give you some helpful hints that you follow their suggestions. They are here to help you, assist you but we do expect everyone to follow the guidelines. We would love to hear your thoughts on your books; so please look around and find your niche.

Bentley
