Hi Stuart,

It is good to hear from you again; but the author's thread where I placed your book is the only place where we allow self promotion. I am delighted that I was able to help you. I think it has been a couple of years anyways since I heard from you on Amazon I believe. So glad that all is well.

Having a boxer puppy will keep you quite busy but I think your family and you will enjoy the addition.

World War II has an established thread and the assisting moderator handling that area is Aussie Rick. A whole box of old Churchill books; well I think I would be in my element. Kindles are terrific and I am glad that you had good use for it.

I have taken the liberty to remove the self promotion segments (what our rules and guidelines cite as self promotion) of your post and have reattached it here:

From Stuart Finlay:

Bentley
I live in England and with my Wife and Twin Teenage boys + new addition of a Boxer Dog puppy.

I love reading history with my focus on WW2 and look forward to learning and contributing with the group.

Thanks for the advice on how to become a Goodreads author.

I have always got 2-3 books on the go and read whenever I get the chance. My wife bought me a box of 15 old Churchill books from the 50’s and 60’s for Xmas which are fantastic. I also got a Kindle for my birthday today. What a great device.

I never realised just how awesome the e-readers are. They will never replace books for me as I love discovering old books, but great for new stuff.

Stuart,

I have also taken the liberty to add a sample of how we do citations here when citing a book or an author:

Three parts: (bookcover always when available - it usually is except for older books), (author's photo when available) and always (the author's link) - author's name in linkable text.

Here is a sample: (from a mutual hero)

My Early Life 1874-1904 by Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill

I also have added some other helpful links including the guidelines, orientation, etc.

Glad that you found your way back to goodreads and reached out. Sorry that I had to delete certain segments of your intro but unfortunately we have to be consistent with the guidelines even with old acquaintances. Hope you enjoy your time here and all of those wonderful old books. Congrats on your achievement as well.

Bentley

Folks, please welcome Stuart to our group.

Terri Hi, my name is Terri. I have been on Goodreads for a couple years and for some reason it has taken me this long to join your group. Better late than never???

I am Australian. And Female.
I have a few favourite genres, but dabble in nearly everything. I mostly read Historical Fiction, Ancient History Fiction and Non. I also enjoy Modern Warfare in both it's forms - fiction and non fiction.

My favourite book of 2010 was Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War by Karl Marlantes with Generation Kill by Evan Wright and The Whale Road by Robert Low in a tie for second favourite. My least favourite book of 2010 was.......apparently, so bad I can't recall it.

I hope to involve myself in the group as I am an active GR member who enjoys the social reading element of the site.

Hope to come across you all in the discussions,
Terri :-)

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Welcome Terri, glad you finally found us!

A couple things to help you get started with The History Book Club. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

Matterhorn A Novel of the Vietnam War by Karl Marlantes Karl Marlantes Karl Marlantes
Generation Kill by Evan Wright Evan Wright Evan Wright
The Whale Road (Oathsworn, #1) by Robert Low Robert Low (no author photo available)

More information on how to add the pictures and links:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Also look at our orientation thread:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Hopefully this will all be easy for you as an old-time goodreads member. We have lots of books going at any one time, and lots of threads for discussion almost any area of history. Enjoy!

Michael Hello. As way of an introduction: My name's Michael from Nottingham, UK and I enjoy reading many variants of non-fiction. I thought I would join this group to reignite my neglected interest in all things historical.

I used to read many biographies of 'great' leaders be they US presidents, UK prime ministers or WW2 generals. I look forward to being inspired to read books that in the past I may not have considered.

Robert wrote: "Sorry. I didn't think explaining who I was qualified as self-promotion and it was certainly not intended to be. It is simply the person I am on Goodreads. I'll avoid that kind of disclosure in the ..."

No problem, we have strict guidelines because unfortunately many folks join just to get publicity and then we never hear from them again and then they left spam in their wake.

I had actually just explained this in post 2167.

Also, before anybody posts for the first time; a pop up window comes up which says the following:

Read req'd group guidelines: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2851... + no spam/ads/mktg/self promotion/bookcover spam/flaming/flamebaiting/trolling or trolls allowed; no marketing of any kind to our membership list

Being a newcomer, you may not have seen post 2167, but we try very hard to make the guidelines visible. We really want folks to get to know the group and to participate in the discussions and threads which I am sure you will do. Unfortunately, as mentioned before, most who publicize a blog, url, other group, book, article usually publicize in a bunch of goodreads sites all at once and have no intention of really contributing further. That is why some groups that are actively moderated like this one just remove what we consider marketing, spam, self promotion right away.

message 2135: by Robert (new)

Robert Morrow (robertmorrow) I appreciate that and apologize again. I did read the group guidelines in advance but didn't think my comments qualified as "marketing". Naivete on my part. Thanks for the clarification.
