Alisa (mstaz) Keith, glad you found the group and decided to join in. The links Bryan provided you will be very helpful as you get started exploring the site. Welcome!

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Welcome Keith, I'm sure you will have a fun time here discussing great books and authors.

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments I've been out of town for the past week, so I've missed welcoming our newest members. So here is a big welcome to Mike, Raffi, Josh, Faith, Mitch, Bill, Tom, Kathy, Andrea, and Keith. I hope to see a lot of you as I catch-up on the various threads!

To Tom: Being a reenactor sounds like a ton of fun. What a great hobby or side-job or whatever it is for you. Talk about living the history!

message 2054: by Steve (new)

Steve Van Slyke (steve_van_slyke) Hola amigos, my name is Steve. I live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico seven months of the year. The other five months my wife and I live aboard our sailboat in Gig Harbor, Washington. I'm a member of two other Goodreads history groups focused on the US Revolution, and although that is my favorite era, I read in others as well and I was looking for a group that is more active. Aside from history, my other main reading interests are in the sciences.

message 2055: by Garret (new)

Garret (ggannuch) Welcome Steve!

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

An example: A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson Bill Bryson

Thanks and glad you joined us.

message 2056: by Steve (new)

Steve Van Slyke (steve_van_slyke) I did read the orientation thread and I am familar with the "add/book" feature, for example, the book I just today finished combines both my interests in history and science, it is The Scientists: A History of Science Told Through the Lives of Its Greatest Inventors by John R. Gribbin.

message 2057: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Steve, welcome to the group. Garret was nice enough to note the clubs requirements and I can see you have read them. There is a preview function just below the comment box so you can make sure your cited books are appearing properly. It is bok cover and author link always, plus author photo when available. In this case all three were available. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it quickly. If you have any questions feel free to drop a note to one of the moderators. Glad to have you in the group.

message 2058: by Steve (new)

Steve Van Slyke (steve_van_slyke) Thanks, I'll follow your example in the future. Just an observation but in both Garrett's example and yours it is impossible to read the title of the book without clicking on the thumbnail.

message 2059: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Hi Steve and welcome. I hope you find the group interesting.

The title *should* pop up as you move your mouse over the cover, but this might be not be case depending on your computer and age of your operating system.

message 2060: by Elizabeth S (last edited Jan 12, 2011 09:55AM) (new)

Elizabeth S (esorenson) | 2011 comments Welcome, Steve. Glad to have you. I also enjoy reading science books as well as history books. I've only tried one Gribbin book, and didn't like it as well. I think it was because I read it so many years after he wrote it, so the science was older. How did you like The Scientists?

The Scientists A History of Science Told Through the Lives of Its Greatest Inventors by John R. Gribbin by John R. Gribbin John R. Gribbin

Edit: By the way, I think the reason the book title link is not required is because people often mention the title of the book in text before making the links. It is okay to do both the title link and the cover link, but the latter is what is required. Hope that helps!

Hello Steve and welcome to the History Book Club. I feel a pang of jealousy that you are in warm Puerto Vallarta while I am just digging myself out of the latest Northeaster.

It sounds like you and your wife are active sailors. Good for both of you. I looked at your profile and realized that you were also an author so I am adding your details to our author's thread. I appreciate that you read our guidelines and yes we do cite the bookcover, the author's photo if it is available and always the author's link (which is the author's name in linkable text). We do all of the above to take advantage of the goodreads software so that our site is populated correctly and group members can find things easily.

Additionally we use the bookcovers because it is more of a visual, stands out more than the text and when you run your cursor over the cover, you also see the title pop up. We add the author's photo because our group members like myself are curious as to what each author looks like and of course the author's name in linkable text for the obvious reasons. Book covers are also much more attractive and eye catching and we find that adding the bookcovers highlights the fact that a book has been cited in the post.

I can see that Garret was kind enough to add our links and give you some helpful newbie advice. In no time you should get the hang of this site. Every group has their own rules and guidelines. If you would like to discuss the cited book further; we have a thread where discussions can take place on any book that folks are reading. It is in the folder called My Books and I. I have provided a link to the thread What is Everybody Reading Now.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

This thread is only for welcomes and introductions. If you need any assistance any one of the moderators is happy to help out. And thank you for reading our rules first and abiding by the no self promotion rule. We really appreciate that.

Christopher Dunbar | 18 comments Greetings, everyone. I am not a reader of historical fiction, though I am a reader of history, and I write a blending of historical fiction and other things (most of my history reading is actually research for my writing). Most of my recent research has been Irish pre-history, British history BCE, Late Roman Republic, Early Roman Empire, Fall of Rome, 6th century CE, and the era of Charlemagne.

For pleasure, I enjoy watching movies and TV programs on World War II, ancient Rome, Tudor England, 18th and early 19th century naval warfare, and Scottish history. I read an occasional historical fiction novel, but I can't remember the last one I read... hmmmm.... To Hell and Back by Audie Murphy by Audie Murphy, I recall, but now that I think about it, that was an autobiography and not fiction. Anyway...

Cheers!

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. To Hell and Back by Audie Murphy by Audie Murphy

We alway try to add the bookcover not the link if the bookcover is available (stands out more and is very visual and easier to read and differentiate from the author's name). Then we add the author's photo if available and always the author's link (which is the author's name in linkable text). Audie Murphy's book did not have an author's photo; but I did find the book cover.

Also, we are primarily a non fiction history group, but we also read historical fiction.
