Bill and David,

The event notification is up and has been sent out for Legacy of Ashes. You can sign up now. This is normally the thread only for welcomes and introductions. We do have the Off Topic Cafe where anything can be asked or discussed and/or you can send me a PM. I will send you both a invitation (friend) so that you can communicate with me more easily.

@ Jim (message 1911)

We do have a thread where you should be able to get a lot of help with your request from the membership and of course we are happy to help out but the thread to search out is the following:

It is called: "I am Looking for a Book On..."

Here is the link:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

I think you will have better luck getting some help if you repost your note over on that link.

I am sure you will get a lot of folks pitching in over there.

Richard | 3 comments Hello all, My name is Richard and am a husband of 8 yrs. and father to great five year old. I love History and am currently reading Titan. My wife is currently working on masters, but I hope to one day return to school to finish my history degree. Glad to be part of this group and look forward to the great books.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Richard,

Good to see you join the group. I am sure you will have a great time discussing great books and great moments in history with the rest of the group.

Below are some links that will help you navigate the History Book Club and what our requirements are. It would be very helpful if you took the time to familiarise yourself with these:

Mechanics of the Board
(this one is helpful for when you want to add book covers and author's photo's/links which makes things easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author)

and:

Orientation & Roadmap

So for example, when you referred to your current book "Titan" it should look something like this:

Titan The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow

Hello Richard,

I see that Aussie Rick was kind enough to post some helpful links to our guidelines and help desk threads. We add citations in a uniform way to take advantage of the power of the goodreads software so that our site is populated by the links across the different threads. We add the book cover always, the author's photo when available and always the author's link (which is the author's name as linkable text).

It must be neat having a five year old around the house especially this time of year when everything seems so magical to them and decorated.

We are very glad to have you with us.

Bentley

Hello Alex

We are glad to have you; but please do not add threads to various folders. We try to avoid problems with duplication and out of control folders and threads. Please read our guidelines and if you have any suggestions please place them on one of the suggestion threads and we will take a look at them and see if we can accomodate them here; most we can if they do not duplicate other threads.

Guidelines:

Waven | 6 comments Hi. I'm new, to the group and much of the genre (though I've been on Goodreads for a while). I live in the United States, love reading, and was recently forced to build a new bookshelf. :-) But I wasn't much on historical reading until recently, so I'm looking forward to exploring more in that direction.

George Jones | 7 comments Hey everyone:

George Jones here, from shivering California. I'm so glad to find this group. I am fascinated by the Crusades. Every aspect. Every battle. Every viewpoint. It amazes me that from some points, these wars have never really ended. They still affect us and our countries today. Even after the West has tried to make peace and live in friendship or at least have a civil relationship with the East, they still dream of overrunning us, taking everything we have, coming to our countries to rule us,etc. When will it end? Must we fight the Crusades again, and win overwhelmingly so that we may finally live in peace? I'm interested in hearing from many viewpoints. So much of anything I've seen on video about the Crusades seems terribly biased in relation to the real history, making the West, seem like the bad guys, and the East really just were peace loving folks who just wanted to rule their world without interruption or question from "illegitimate foreign imperialist invaders". It all seems to run over the fact that the easterners were the foreign invaders, the area had law and order already and did not need robbing, raping and pillaging introduced by foreign invaders. Not that the West was perfect, mind you, it certainly wasn't. But it really does seem like the West, for the most part, really did govern better! Opinions, please. I've read all the Runciman and Riley-Smith books I could get my hands on. Great stuff. I have to admit after reading the Fall of Constantinople, I wanna know, when do we get to go and take it back!!!

Hello George,

Thank you for introducing yourself here. For the benefit of the other assisting moderators, I want them to know that I have sent to you under separate cover all of the links to the guidelines and the rules of the history book club so I will not link to them again here. The links are provided in the separate PM that I sent to you.

Additionally, we set up a separate folder for The Crusades moving it from its thread to a place where I believe everyone will be able to find it easily.

Here is the link:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

There is also a Suggestions Box if you have additional ideas that you would like to request:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...

This particular thread is dedicated to only introductions and welcomes; so I would request that any discussions regarding The Crusades be made on that thread (link provided above).

We have a great thread with a very in depth discussion which has already taken place. Please read the entire thread and take advantage of everything that has been posted already and of course if you have an exciting book that you would like to share about the Crusades - of course follow the guidelines for citations and let us know about it.

We post all books this way: book cover, author's photo and then the author's link.

Here is a sample:

My Early Life 1874-1904 by Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill

Also, Aussie Rick is the Assisting Moderator who is in charge of the Military History aspects of the site including the new Crusades folder. Seek him out for any information on procedures and policies.

In terms of the Crusades, I understand your point of view and sympathize that many times history seems to be rewritten. However, it is what it is and we try to be respectful of everybody's points of view because believe it or not we are a global community with members from all around the globe including places where some of the Crusades were fought so many years ago. But please read all of the comments and posts on the thread and you will find many different viewpoints and interpretations which I think you will find interesting and though provoking alongwith some multimedia links.

Enjoy and any other opinions regarding The Crusades should not be posted on this thread.

Welcome George.

George, it is true...we all age and we think that everything that happened was just yesterday or it seems like it was a century ago.

But the truth of the matter is that we just have to enjoy our life and be happy with the life we have.

Barbara (barbarasc) | 12 comments Hi. I have recently joined this group, but this is the first time I'm posting here. I would love to participate in the January discussion of Legacy of Ashes. I've been wanting to read it for a long time, and it would be great to be part of your discussion on it. I read a lot of historical fiction, historical non-fiction, biographies, and memoirs (and I also read fiction as well -- I try to be as diverse as possible.)
I'm currently reading Young Mandela: The Revolutionary Years by David James Smith.

Anyway, I'm sort of trying to figure out how the posting and comments work here. It seems a bit confusing, but I'm sure I'll get used to it!

I look forward to meeting all of you here!!

Alisa (mstaz) Hello Barbara, we are glad to have you in the group.
Do familiarize yourself with how we run this group as there are important things to know when adding books etc. A few links to help you get started:

Guidelines:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Mechanics of the Board:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Our group requires that when you cite a book and/or author that you add the book cover when available (it usually is), the author's photo when available, and the author's link which is always available. The book and author tracking feature is important to help us all navigate to the correct book and discuss and discover great reads and discussions.

You can find the add book/author link just above the comment box. The books you mentioned would look like this.
Legacy of Ashes the History of the CIA by Tim Weiner by Tim Weiner Tim Weiner
Young Mandela The Revolutionary Years by David James Smith by David James Smith David James Smith
You should add the book cover, and both the author photo (if available) and the link.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask any of the moderators.
Glad you found the group and hope you enjoy your discussions here.

Kristen | 20 comments Hi everyone! My name is Kristen, and I live in the Midwest. I have been married for almost 5 years, and have a two and a half year old son, also living in the house is a yellow lab and two cats. I work as an assistant band director, teaching grades 6-12...I like high school the best by far! I have been interested in history for as long as I can remember. When I was about ten or eleven I started reading my dad's history books that he got from the library. However, my parent's thought the content was too mature for me so I had to read after they were asleep, and my dad would always return them before I could finish. Now we recommend many books to each other so it all worked out in the end. I like to read anything and everything really, and I go through phases. For a couple of months I will read a lot of fiction and fluff, but then I get tired of that so I go on to more serious nonfiction and ones that I can learn from. I am looking forward to talking to other people here!

Hello Kristen, we are happy to have you as part of the History Book Club.

If there is anything we can do to help out, please let us know.

I see that Bryan put together some of the important links that we use.

Bryan Craig Hi Kristen:

Great story. I can relate as my dad brought home history books from the library for me to read, and that is how I got hooked.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

More information:

Kristen | 20 comments Wow, what a welcome!! Thanks everyone, I am excited to be here.

Elizabeth S. - I'm not sure if my dad ever knew or not because I always tried to put the books back EXACTLY as he had it. I should tell him though because he would probably think it was really funny now.

Nancy (nancybartellsbcglobalnet) Just joined this club today altho' I've been with Goodreads over a year. I have just begun reading about the looting of art in Europe by the Nazis in WWII which is an absolutely incredible part of history of which I was unaware. This leads me to learn more about France during that period since I'm an avowed Francophile.

Who can give me suggestions on books to read about the Vichy government then?

Looking forward to being a part of the group.
