Delighted to find this group!
I'm a customer service librarian at a suburban public library. I am currently looking at various Master's degree programs in Public History/Museum Studies, so I can do what I love and (actually) get paid for it. =)
I volunteer at a local historical society once a week where I help with public relations and research.
The majority of books I read are non-fiction. I especially enjoy biographies, women's history, pop culture, art and social commentary.
Look forward to interacting with all of you!

When you are ready to cite a book, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

Thank you Bryan for providing Jodi with all of the helpful links.
Jodi, welcome to the History Book Club. With your background you should fit right in.

(I have read your guidelines and anticipate no trouble following them!)

This online club is filled with book and history addicts just like yourself so I am sure you will find plenty to discuss out here. We look forward to your contributions!
Welcome Leslie,
There really is nothing new in our guidelines..basically common sense; one thing worth noting however is how we do citations to take advantage of the powerful goodreads software. Any btw thank you for taking the time to carefully read them.
Winston S. Churchill
We add the book cover, the author's photo when available and the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.
I think with your background in history you will be a tremendous asset.
And what I just noticed just as I was ready to click on post is that one of the assisting moderators has greeted you already. They are all on the ball.
But welcome Leslie even though now I am belated. (smile)

Now I'm turning off the computer for a while and opening up a book!

Kristi, I am thrilled to have you with us. You will find a lot of camaraderie with Aussie Rick who will be overjoyed that someone is interested in his favorite genres.
Please note the Important Items folder at the top. It contains guidelines, rules, orientation information that you should read.

To learn about how to cite both books and authors, you can check with the help desk folder:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...
The Mechanics of the Board thread is helpful.
Whenever we mention a book in a post, we add the book cover, the author's photo if available and always the author's link. Here is a sample:
Winston S. Churchill
If you are mentioning simply an author, it is the last two:
Winston S. Churchill
It sounds like you have a lot on your plate, a young family, work and being a book addict (smile).
Just jump right in whenever you are ready and we look forward to your posts. If you need any help, do not hesitate to ask one of the assisting moderators.
All best,
Bentley

My name is Tanya and I'm a bibliophile and history lover. I have books and audiobooks on hand covering a range of eras from Prehistory to Sumerian Civilization to The Vietnam War. I like to do extra-bilbiographic research like eating foods from an era or, listening to music referred to in a book or going to see relevant paintings in a museum... even collecting an odd artifact here and there :-) I did post-graduate work at Georgetown (All But Thesis) in Medieval and Early Modern European History.
In the interest of full disclosure I do work in the publishing industry, more specifically in the audiobook publishing industry; but I have no inclination or intention whatsoever of using this group to "pimp" product. My interests far exceed any/all of the offerings of the company I work for. If you think this poses a problem to my being here, however, please let me know and I will of course respect your decision(s).

In the interest of full disclosure Tanya is my best audiobook friend. Yes she works in the industry, but I can vouch that she is also a real lover of books, reading, and of course the audiobook format. She brings depth and a level of participation that would truly make her a welcomed addition to the group.

Welcome to the group, I suffer from the same problems you do, I'm also a bibliophile and history lover! I love all periods of history from ancient to current.
Best check out Bentley's message #1730 which lays out the requirements and ground rules for the group but I am sure you will have a fun time here and I look forward to chatting with you about your favourite books and authors soon.
Hello Tanya,
If you are a bibliophile you are in the right place. You sound like an interesting person.
Hmmm...I have been trying to get Medieval and European History folders off the ground and maybe you have some ideas. We can discuss later because this thread is for intros and welcomes.
As far as pimping, of course no pimping or self promotion allowed; but you knew that already. As long as you are wearing your reader or listener hat, there is no problem whatsoever.
Take a look at the Important Items folder and you should be OK.
We do have standards and guidelines; many groups do not - but we do. We ask for citation of sources and we insist on adding citations of books and authors in a certain way; so that the goodreads software can populate our site completely as well as across goodreads.
We hope you enjoy your stay with us and we look forward to your posts and input.
All best,
Bentley

Before moving to Mexico I was part of the Production Staff at Bandai Entertainment Inc. (releasing anime series in English). I love stories in just about any format, whether it is the written word, animated, musical, or dramatized.
I don't think I have any particular favorite time in History, although I find the ancient histories of the Middle East and Asia to be fascinating. I also find military history to be enthralling, and love to devour books on the tactics and logistics of warfare in different ages and settings.
Living in Mexico makes it really difficult to get my hands on books in English, I have to hope there is an ebook format of any title I want to read since even the postal service here can't be trusted (I've lost so many things from family and friends trying to send mail to me here >.<).
I can't wait to dig through the massive threads of intelligent discussion here in the History Book Club! (I read the guidelines before joining!)

And welcome also to Nicole. Thanks for taking the time to read the guidelines before joining. As Bentley said in message #1739, we do take them seriously. And that is part of why we have such a great, organized group where people can share their ideas, love of books, and love of history.
If you have any questions about how to use the "add book/author" feature, please let us know. We are always glad to help! Books should look like this:

I hope you are able to get good copies of the books you are interested in and enjoy the discussions with us!

We are delighted to have you also with us Nicole. Elizabeth S. in message 1741 gave you some great tips and advice.
It must be difficult to be in a position of not even receiving your mail and/or having to rely solely on ebooks.
We hope you enjoy your time here and that you like the site.
Regards,
Bentley

This is Sari's Introduction:

Sari, please make sure to read our guidelines:
Read post 1743. Thanks.
And welcome to the group. We already have an introduction and welcome thread and we try to avoid extraneous threads. If you have any threads that you have in mind, please contact me first and I would be able to consider any and all if these are not duplicates, etc. I would be happy to set them up in the appropriate locations; since we have countless topics, it is difficult to keep everything streamlined. And we eliminate any threads which are duplicates and are not set up by the moderation team.

Sorry Bently,
Thought I posted in the right folder. Still trying to navigate the group. Thanks for putting me straight:)
No problem Sari...it is just that if everybody created their own introduction folder we would have 717 folders devoted to hellos instead of one spot which we try to avoid (smile)
