Kb | 2 comments I saw a link to this site on Gizmodo and decided to check it out. I live in California and teach both Advanced Placement (AP) US Government and Politics and AP United States history. Although I cannot read as much as I want during the school year, I typically read a book or two dealing with one of the courses that I teach. My wife and two sons are avid readers.

message 1457: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Hi Kb:

Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

More information:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Take a few moments to read our policies:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

and our guidelines:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.

Ray (gorlith) | 5 comments Hello all, I also heard of the site through gizmodo this morning and have spent the mornign browsing around before ending up in this group. Some of my recent reads are Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond and The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris. I'm currently reading Theodore Rex. I'm a Software Engineer, avid gamer, hobby game developer, home-brewer, and bassist. Hoping to find some interesting books to read on this site.

Kb | 2 comments Here is the most recent book I have read and would highly recommend to anyone interested in American history.
What Hath God Wrought The Transformation of America, 1815-1848 (Oxford History of the United States) by Daniel Walker Howe by Daniel Walker Howe
(I like how the author used footnotes rather than end notes - so I do not have to flip back and forth so much.

The Great Bridge The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge by David McCullough by David McCullough

Shloime | 1 comments Hello to everyone. I don't know whether I'm doing this right, but I'd like to introduce myself (Shloime Perel) as a new member. I live in Montreal but am currently in L.A. for a few weeks. I'm especially interested in reading about nature conservation, animal rights, peace and social justice issues. One of my favorite books is Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring." I also picked up a history book recently, "Dreams of Nationhood: American Jewish Communists and the Soviet Birobidzhan Project, 1924-1951," by Henry Srebrnik.

I hope this gets through to Goodreads and that I will figure out the system.

message 1490: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Welcome Shloime, we are glad you joined the group. There are many topics and books to discuss so as you explore the site please join in the conversation. Do familiarize yourself with how we run this group as there are important things to know when adding books etc. A few links to help you get started:

Guidelines:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2851...

Orientation:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1851...

Mechanics of the Board:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2878...

Our group requires that when you cite a book and/or author that you add the book cover when available (it usually is), the author's photo when available, and the author's link which is always available. The book and author tracking feature is important to help us all navigate to the correct book and discuss and discover great reads and discussions.

The books you mentioned above would look like this:
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson by Rachel Carson Rachel Carson
Dreams of Nationhood American Jewish Communists and the Soviet Birobidzhan Project, 1924-1951 by Henry Srebrnik byHenry Srebrnik

You'll get the hang of it, but if you have questions feel free to ask any of the moderators.

We look forward to your posts.

Welcome Shloime to the History Book Club. Alisa gave you some very helpful links which should serve you well.

We always do our citations in a certain way: (book covers, author's photos when available as well as author's links (which is the author's name in text).

You should get the hang of things in a bit. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

Bentley

message 1495: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 75 comments Hi! I joined because I really like the books that are on the reading list, having either read them, or having them on my TBR. I really look forward to reading the posts in this group!

My name is Shannon, I have two cats who help me read. I live in Seattle. I graduated from the U of W with a BA in history and have in recent years had to relegate my degree to a really expensive hobby. I'm a bit of a generalist though so I read anything that strikes my fancy. I really look forward to participating in this group because I've always liked the discussion that occurs after reading a great book.

Thank you very much for making me feel welcome! I look forward to seeing what you're reading!

I'd type more, but I hurt my finger and I'm really strugling here! : )

Glad you found the group, I am sure you will find much to pique your curiousity among the many discussion threads. Aussie Rick was kind enough to give you the pointers to how things work and it's easy to get the hang of it. Glad you are here!

message 1499: by James (new)

James Rada Jr. (jimrada) | 5 comments Hi, everyone, my name is Jim and I love learning about history and I'm always looking for good books. My favorite history authors are Erik Larson, David McCullough and Nathaniel Philbrick. So you can tell I like narrative American history. Right now, I'm reading Satan's Circus by Mike Dash, which is pretty good. I don't read much historical fiction, though I have had 4 historical novels published. I also write a lot of magazine articles about historical topics and two local history newspaper columns. I enjoy narrative history because it actually tells the story of the people and events rather than simply giving you names and dates. I also like it because it doesn't inject as much modern-day interpretation of yesterday's events. I'm hoping that I'll find plenty of good book suggestions here.

Thanks,
Jim Rada
