Welcome; WWI is fascinating, my grandfather was in it on the western front and my father's father spent an extra year or so fighting for Latvian independence on the Eastern. The era is interesting. Welcome aboard!

Michael Flanagan (loboz) Hi all, I’m 35 and live in the Australian island state of Tasmania, and yes we do have Tassie devils here. For a living I am a Correctional Officer, which is a great place to people watch. Hey now I think about it that's what I get paid to do.

I love History in all forms; I have a strong leaning towards Military History, mainly World War II. But I read any subject that catches my interest. I like looking at the people involved in History, trying to put you in their place, and ask how I would have behaved in that circumstance. Extremes stress and situations can make humans behave in such interesting ways.

I will stop banging on, but I do look forward in becoming an active contributor to this group

Michael, welcome to the History Book Club. I am sue that you will find a lot to talk about here. You might be the first person in the group from Tasmania.

Since Military History is your interest, I am sure that you will get to know another fellow Australian - Aussie Rick - who is one of my Assisting Moderators. He focuses on Military History.

If there is anything that we can do to help get you acquainted with the group, just make sure to always ask. The group is very friendly and helpful.

message 1254: by Harvey (new)

Harvey | 284 comments Michael, welcome. As Bentley pointed out it is a very friendly group. Aussie Rick is a great assisting moderator too. You should have fun here!

Cindy (cindyplasierraedu) | 1 comments Hi all,
I'm a new member. I love to read about Presidents and have recently been reading about T. Roosevelt. I really enjoyed reading the comments between members and am looking forward to good discussion. I'm reading The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt right now and have read Theodore Rex, Mornings on Horseback and the River of Doubt.

I am a librarian at a small university and teach a class on the intersection of science and religion. I am also an attorney

message 1262: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Welcome, Cindy. Glad you could join us, and feel totally free to jump right in with us on TR. Don't be shy.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris Edmund Morris Edmund Morris
Theodore Rex (Modern Library Paperbacks) by Edmund Morris Edmund Morris Edmund Morris
Mornings on Horseback by David McCullough David McCullough David McCullough
The River of Doubt Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard Candice Millard

my name is Zohar, I'm at the ripe old age of 40 and currently reside in New Jersey. I am a husband and father of two mischievous children and rest 40 hours a week as a software engineer.

I have always loved history which I try to see from the perspective of the people who lived it as well as from the advantage of hindsight.

(this one is helpful for when you want to add book covers and author's photo's/links)

and:

Orientation & Roadmap

message 1272: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Hi Lynette! ~ Welcome to the group. I have a cousin named Lynette and its a pretty name yet I don't stumble across it often. Nice to have you!

Your self-professed history geekdom will find much to get lost in so dive in wherever you please. You will want to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment, if you have not already. It populates the site so that others can track to the correct book and discussion and an important feature of what makes this particular club so successful.

There is a current read going on now about TR, and a thread dedicated to him along with each of the other Presidents in the Presidential series. Have a look around! Welcome, glad to have you.

Well ever since I can remember I love history especially anything ancient.. I watch tons of documentaries and specials as much as I can. I must admit I haven't read any historical books ( well historical fiction ) lately but I am hoping to pick up some new books in the coming month or so.

message 1281: by Thom (new)

Thom (flthom) | 6 comments Hello all,
My name is Thom, I live down SW Florida and own a citrus grove care taking company. This job allows me to spend long hours listening to History in the tractor =)
I began my love of history with my father telling me the oral history of our family, then reading Livy's histories and Bruce Catton Civil war history at age 8. Since then I seem to go in period phases, when I was a teen, American Civil War and WWII were my favorites. Right now I enjoy reading Ancient Greek, Roman, and Hittite history. Also the Byzantium Empire's history has always intrigued me
Well enough of my rambling, I look forward to meeting ya'll, discussing and finding books in this group
Thom

message 1290: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Hello everyone. This is the first History Book club I've ever done, so I am excited. I am currently a student and will be graduating, eventually, with a history degree. I want to teach history because I believe that everyone deserves to have a history teacher who has passion for the subject. I love history books and how they highlight the amazing feats that people go through, in battle and in life.
I look forward to reading and discussing amazing books with you!

message 1291: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Hi Melinda! ~ Welcome, we are so glad you found us. I think you will find lots of great books and moments in history to discuss on the varous threads out here. Make yourself at home and jump into the discussion wherever you please.

Hi Melinda! Welcome! I agree that every student deserves a teacher with passion, whatever the subject. I am no mathematician, but at the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah in Kuwait, some years ago, I sat in on a lecture about mathematics AND the lecture was in Arabic! I went along, despite the fact I was only obliged to edit the English lectures on Islamic art and culture. I was delighted that forty minutes passed so quickly; not because I slept through the lecture, but because Ahmed Djebbar (also the author of Une histoire de la science arabe by Ahmed Djebbar ) communicated his passion for his subject. I felt his students at Lille were indeed fortunate. I hope you enjoy the group. It is a friendly and varied group reflecting many interests and well moderated by a great team.

Bryan Craig Hi Melinda:

I"m glad you found us too. I still remember my passionate social studies teacher from the 4th grade, so there you go!
