Chris, when America entered WWII the USS North Carolina, from the state where I reside, was the newest battleship in the U.S. Naval Fleet. I believe the USS North Carolina, currently residing in Wilmington, NC, ended up being the most decorated battleship of the war.

Thank you to everyone who have welcomed me to the group. I am sure I will be reading some every interesting posts.

Mark, longevity runs in my family. My father, the baby of his family, died at the age of 92 - the rest of his siblings were much older when they died. Dad's uncle was 106 when he died and I plan on following in the steps of my Great Uncle. I just have too much to do to consider anything else.

Hi everyone, old and new! I'm new to this board and to GoodReads. Although I've already got a queue of books "I have to read...preferably RIGHT NOW" already, I'm sure I'll be adding to it from this group as well: in fact, I already have! I am currently realizing just how much I've missed about history in the 19th century in France and Germany, as most of the books in English I've seen focus mainly on the US and Great Britain. Any suggestions (while I do read French, it's rusty, so I'd prefer English!)?

Hello,
My name is Ann and I am from Nebraska. I was a history major in college and graduate school many years ago. I retired from teaching English as a Second Language at the end of this school year. Teaching was a second career and before I began that, I worked many years as a computer analyst, in a lowly job helping to find glitches in phone bills.

I read mostly fiction, but now that I am retired and have more time I would like to read more non-fiction. I am especially interested in modern American political history as well as social and cultural history from any era and place. I also like reading about other countries, particularly Russia and Japan.

Aside from reading, my other big hobby is traveling.

This looks like a very active and vibrant group. I hope to join you in discussing the Caro biography of LBJ.

I understand the non-spoiler threads, but I am a bit confused about the spoiler threads. Is a spoiler thread set up at the beginning of the discussion for people who prefer to discuss the book or subject as a whole or do you wait until the non-spoiler sections are finished?
