Welcome Mary Anne. Looks like you're deep into fairly recent history - the time-traveling take on it must be interesting.
And welcome Heidi. I hope with all the studying you have coming up, you will still have some time to read for fun.
Welcome Nathan. Another librarian! I know you'll enjoy it here.

I'm visiting my family in the R.O.K. this summer. Going back to the states where I still have a year's worth of responsibilities unfinished. Decided to read more (fiction mostly, but can't run away from non-fiction because it's better overall) because tv shows and movies have become extremely predictable and boring on the whole, having watched so many.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.
When you discuss a book this is how your post should look:

Welcome Yong. What an interesting sub-speciality you have - military history from Hellenistic times to the Middle Ages. Please sign up in our 50 Books in 2012 section. I'd love to hear about what you're reading, especially as related to ancient Rome.

Apart from all the fascinating discussions on history we also have quite a few fine threads on music.
Come take a look/listen if you like.
Best,
André

@Vicki: I have signed up for the challenge. I'll post any good ancient books I pick up!
@Andre: Thanks, I will check it out in time.
@Sigrun: Aaah, I may be interested in them. What time period? I really don't like reading much of 1500s-1800s warfare, but WWII was my first love in history.

I am married with two adult children, and my first grandchild was born in May, with another one due in September -- both boys.
I'm looking forward to receiving reading recommendations!

Welcome Rozzer. Isn't it great being retired! There's still not enough time for reading, though.
And welcome Nancy. Congratulations on your grandsons. I have one and a half granddaughters myself. We've got a small section here for parents (and grandparents) with book recommendations. Check it out.

Actually my agenda in joining the group aside from a lover of history is I wanted to confirm that the books 'Sex with Kings: 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Rivalry, and Revenge' and 'Sex with the Queen: 900 Years of Vile Kings, Virile Lovers, and Passionate Politics' is a non-fiction book though I'm 99% sure it's non-fiction still I want to make it 100%

I'm Pieter, living in New Haven, CT. Having worked as a journalist and travel writer, I started with exploration/expedition literature (from classics like Wind, Sand, and Stars to recent works like Endurance [Shackleton]). I love maritime history, like Heart of the Sea, and anything dealing with New England, especially the revolutionary war times.
Recently, I've gotten more into European history and wars and am really enjoying it. I'm looking forward to reading Thirty Year War and joining the discussion.
Feel free to contact/add me/ping me any time.
