Welcome Mary Anne. Looks like you're deep into fairly recent history - the time-traveling take on it must be interesting.

And welcome Heidi. I hope with all the studying you have coming up, you will still have some time to read for fun.

Welcome Nathan. Another librarian! I know you'll enjoy it here.

Nicole Welcome Mary Anne, Heidi and Nathan. Great that you have joined us. I am sure you will find lots of interesting books and discussions here.

message 4806: by Yongyoon (last edited Jun 05, 2012 03:00AM) (new)

Yongyoon Hello. My name is Yong. I joined this group so that I could read some good general history books and mostly military history books from the Hellenistic period to Late Medieval period. I studied military history on my own since I was in high school. Medieval military history is my specialty; especially interested in the Mongols.

I'm visiting my family in the R.O.K. this summer. Going back to the states where I still have a year's worth of responsibilities unfinished. Decided to read more (fiction mostly, but can't run away from non-fiction because it's better overall) because tv shows and movies have become extremely predictable and boring on the whole, having watched so many.

message 4807: by Mark (last edited Jun 05, 2012 07:09AM) (new)

Mark Mortensen Welcome, Yong. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

When you discuss a book this is how your post should look:

Animal Farm by George Orwell George Orwell George Orwell

Sigrun (ranugis) | 16 comments Hi, Yong. I'm pretty much still a newbie myself, so I won't be able to help you too much. But I've recently read a few books in which the military have a certain role. But on the whole, I'm not really all that savvy about it, and certainly not like you.

message 4815: by Yongyoon (last edited Jun 07, 2012 05:58AM) (new)

Yongyoon Thank you all for the warm welcome. It is great that this group is so well organized, very academic without the constraints of academia.

@Vicki: I have signed up for the challenge. I'll post any good ancient books I pick up!

@Andre: Thanks, I will check it out in time.

@Sigrun: Aaah, I may be interested in them. What time period? I really don't like reading much of 1500s-1800s warfare, but WWII was my first love in history.

Actually my agenda in joining the group aside from a lover of history is I wanted to confirm that the books 'Sex with Kings: 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Rivalry, and Revenge' and 'Sex with the Queen: 900 Years of Vile Kings, Virile Lovers, and Passionate Politics' is a non-fiction book though I'm 99% sure it's non-fiction still I want to make it 100%

Pieter | 6 comments Hi all,

I'm Pieter, living in New Haven, CT. Having worked as a journalist and travel writer, I started with exploration/expedition literature (from classics like Wind, Sand, and Stars to recent works like Endurance [Shackleton]). I love maritime history, like Heart of the Sea, and anything dealing with New England, especially the revolutionary war times.

Recently, I've gotten more into European history and wars and am really enjoying it. I'm looking forward to reading Thirty Year War and joining the discussion.

Feel free to contact/add me/ping me any time.
