Christian Diebold (saperaude) | 9 comments Hello,
My name is Chris. I'm an avid reader of History of almost any period, but in particular of early modern European History. I live in Kansas and am a History teacher, though currently unemployed. Would be glad to participate in the reading club.
Cheers

Becky (httpsbeckylindrooswordpresscom) | 1217 comments Hi Chris ! Welcome to the best little international history book club on the net! :-) We've got great books, discussions and people here so pull up a chair and get comfy.

For this club as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how the book you mentioned should look:

Catherine the Great Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie by Robert K. Massie Robert K. Massie

Sarah (brenhinesbooks) Hi there, I'm Sarah and I'm from the NE of Scotland. I'm studying a degree in Celtic Studies but will happily learn about any period in History and am always happy to find new books to read.

I actually joined this group a little while ago, but just never got around to saying hello.

Hello Sarah from beautiful Scotland. Where are you from in Northeast Scotland. Last year I toured around the entire perimeter of Scotland, South to North, East to West, North to South plus Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and a bunch of other spots (Wick, Thurso, Ullapool, Skye, St Andrews, and drove through countless other spots - too numerous to mention each one). What a road trip especially with the roads (smile). I think we got the most soaked when we were in Aberdeen; I have never seen it rain so hard; I had to buy a new outer coat that was completely water repellant because my coat would not dry (smile). Great stores in Aberdeen and I have to say the North Sea that day was amazing. I have never seen a body of water so rough; could hardly cross the street.

Your degree sounds fascinating. We hope to learn a lot from you and we hope you enjoy the group.

Bentley

I'm from Aberdeen (or rather just outside the city) but have stayed in a few other places as my dad moved around a lot (my favourite is definitely Ballater). My family went on a campervan tour of the Highlands/Islands a while ago and the roads certainly were fun, but the views certainly made up for it!

I have to agree with you - one of the A roads we were on and they use the A designation lightly - there was one lane and traffic in both directions (yikes). When a car was coming at you, one of you had to stop and back up (lol) and pull your car to the side of the road. Then you would drive along and some long stretches of the road were not asphalted and in the middle of the road were Scottish cows (Highland Cattle) just sitting and passing the day or night. We even saw the most beautiful stags we have ever seen. The scenery is breathtaking and so are the roads (smile). I loved it - what an adventure - so beautiful.

Doug Baird Hi everyone, and Bentley,

I'm Doug. I live near Clearwater, Fl, having lived in Florida almost all of my 69 years. I graduated from Colorado at Boulder with a BA in Economics, then attended law school at Stetson. Practiced law for eighteen years and after that have been a Florida state court judge for the last twenty-six. My hobbies are travel, reading, photography and music. I've got three grown kids and my wife is a journalist. I'm due to retire at the end of this year.

This sounds like an obituary. And a dull one at that.

Mallory (matthew_kuhl) | 3 comments Hi there. My name's Matthew, and I'm a 22-year-old recent graduate of Georgia College and State University. I majored in history and minored in psychology, and wrote my senior thesis on the Byzantine emperor Basil II. I've been reading history books since first grade, so it just seemed like a natural path to take.

At the moment, I don't have a job, but when I do, I probably won't be a teacher, thank you very much. I have the utmost respect for teachers, but I would probably tear my hair out on the first day.

Anyhoo, someday, I hope to go into public service, possibly the State Department. In the meantime, I read everything I can get my hands on. I have a particular interest in military history, but no particular era that I'm more interested in. When I'm not reading history, I'm probably reading science fiction, fantasy, or the news.

I think that's about it.

And welcome Matthew. I'm also interested in ancient history, but the Byzantine Empire is a bit too modern for me. My passion is the Roman Republic and early Empire.

I know you'll both find this a very congenial place.

I now live in Endicott, NY where Endicott-Johnson and IBM were founded. I studied History and Poli-Sci at Binghamton University. My wife and I have 3 wonderful children. Two are already in college and the third will graduate from high school this year and go on to prep school before entering West Point.

I'm looking forward to finding more great books to read with the help of this group.

Mary Anne (patkneazle) My name is Mary Anne and I am an elementary school librarian. I read all kinds of non-fiction, but I recently read Connie Willis' fiction books Blackout and All Clear and that led to the snowball effect. First I was reading about the Blitz, and now that has expanded to all of WWII. Really, really, REALLY enjoyed The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History and many others.

Other than that, I read everything, even stuff like fire extinguisher instructions on the wall.

Also like cats, gardening, building dollhouses, visiting historic sites, swimming and cooking and baking.
