Bryan Craig Hello Sofia, and welcome.

Nicole Welcome Sofia! I visited San Francisco a couple years ago and loved the little bits I had time to see.

Bryan Craig Welcome, Debbie. Glad you could join us and great first effort on the citation.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

Enemies A History of the FBI by Tim Weiner Tim Weiner Tim Weiner

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.

Mark Mortensen Welcome Francesca. With your background interest and “friends” I know you will fit right into the group. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a Brussels Griffon in person, but they seem quite neat. I had two Belgian Sheepdogs growing up. Apparently the tiny country of Belgium has a unique history of dogs. I’ve heard there was a film of smoke throughout the Mark Twain House, but this is to be expected from one who is noted to have said: “I smoke only in moderation, one cigar at a time”. message 4721: by Marilee (new)

Marilee (hatchling) | 31 comments I don't believe I've ever introduced myself to the group.

I'm a life long student of history, a traveler, bicycling enthusiast, environmental advocate and lover of books and film [particularly period films, not surprisingly].

I live in South Florida with my family year round, enjoying our mild winters outside, but retreating inside under AC during the hot humid summers. This is the time I do most of my reading, just the opposite of years ago when I lived in New England.

I read printed pages, on my Kindle, and during commutes via recorded books. Listening to a great narrator bring a book alive is fun, just like during my childhood, when one of my parents would read to me every night before going to sleep. I think this is what triggered my love of a good story.

I believe my interest in history began when as a young teen, my family moved to Europe for a few years. We spent every available vacation traveling around fascinating historic cities and in the countryside, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean coast. History seems to be on every street corner, just over every hill and is part and parcel of their heritage.

I also enjoy visiting American historic sites. One of my fondest memories was visiting Harpers Ferry as a child, prior to it being restored and established as a National Historic park. I remember peering into crumbling buildings, seeing things more or less as I imagined they had just been abandoned. I still have a vivid memory of an old fashioned man's shoe lying on the floor in one of the old buildings. In my childish memory, it belonged to someone involved in the raid and was left behind when he fled. Reflecting today, I'm sure that was not the case, but no matter... it inspired my imagination and interest in history.

Mark Mortensen Wow! Marilee welcome to the group and thanks for the official connection. As you know we are a great active group with a common appreciation for world-wide history, which you certainly have. Protecting the environment is certainly a great cause. It is unfortunate that through history wars have caused great damage including tearing countryside’s apart. It appears that you are also good at writing. We look forward to your comments and book recommendations in the future.

Marilee, thank you for posting your introduction; now folks will know who you are when you post.

Please take a look at the links that Bryan was kind enough to add. Because they link to the group's rules and guidelines, it is important to read them and get off on the right foot.

Also, we have special rules for citations, so if you need help there - please be sure to ask for assistance.

Your introduction was very thoughtful and we are glad as Mark stated that you have made an "official connection".

message 4728: by Walt (new)

Walt O'Hara | 11 comments I've been told I should introduce myself.. shucks, I never know what to say at these things. My name is Walter (or Walt), I'm a long-term reader of history and historical fiction. I would not presume to use the phrase "Historian" or "Amateur Historian" of any particular time period; let's just say I have an avid interest in time periods such as Ancient Rome, the Napoleonic Wars, the Thirty Years War, the 19th Century in general, The American Civil War, especially Civil War Naval History (I'm a bit of an Ironclad nut). Naval History in general but more specifically during the steam transition era of the 19th century, WWI, and the Interwar years. I'm less enthused about World War 2 than most men of my generation are, because, really, I just think it's done to death. Cold War, Vietnam, etc, are the eras I grew up with and honestly, they just never felt like "history" to me. I've an avid interest in obscure historical subjects and even maintain a PINTEREST "board' called "Obscure Historical Subjects" if you all have an interested, it's here: http://pinterest.com/misternizz/ I also blog on "The Third Point of Singularity": http://misternizz.wordpress.com and record short fiction and poetry on "Airy Persiflage": http://misternizz.podbean.com.

I'm trying to make a point of reviewing books as I read the now, and I'm using Goodreads for most of that. I took a look at my collection and realized.. good Lord, 800? Really? That just looks like I'm showing off! So now my content here is focused more on the Qualitative than the Quantitative. We'll see!

Anyway, that's me, a bit of a history nut, gamer geek, SF aficionado, married, father, Catholic, blogger, etc.

Nice to meet you all.

Walt

message 4730: by Clayton (new)

Clayton Brannon Here is just a brief history of myself. I love history and reading. I graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Major in Psychology in 1973. There were no minors available at that time but I took over 43 hours of history course's while attending school. I attended college on the GI Bill. I had served five years in the USAF with four year and six months of that time spent overseas.

I own about fifteen hundred books with most of them being books about history. I live in a small town in North West Georgia called Ringgold. If any of you are familiar with the Battle of Chickamauga you can place where I live by a map of the park. We own a forty four acre farm that borders the eastern side of the park. Tour stop one is across the street from our house. We are in what is called the authorized boundaries of the park. The ridge where our house sits looks over Reeds Bridge where the battle first started.

My reading interest vary from time to time. I get on one subject or author and read most of everything they have written and then move on to something else.

I have a thirst for knowing about new things, places and the history from wherever we happen to be traveling. I am reading a few books at the present time on China and India. We have a month long trip to China, Tibet, Nepal and India planned for this fall. Looking forward to seeing the places I have been reading about.

I do not consider myself very knowledgeable. I am not very articulate when it comes to expressing myself so I tend to stay in the background and listen more than I talk. Writing this little bit is extremely uncomfortable for me. I signed up for the contest for the book Enemies, A History of the FBI never dreaming I would actually get to participate in an online discussion. I hope that I can bring something useful to the table and not disappoint anyone.

Hoping this will suffice so I can continue to participate in this group.

Clayton D Brannon

Farrah Farrukh | 3 comments Hello..,one thing I always find difficult is to introduce myself. It's like getting lost for words on the moment well I think I can give a shot =) I'm a student of fine arts and doing specialization in Miniature painting (esp the persian and the mughals)I never had, had any bit of intersest in history (Infact I used to make faces whenever I hear that some one's major is history etc.. but when I started my Bfa I learned how rich and beautiful histories could be, I started from history through arts (stoneage, cave arts etc) and then my interest extended from arts to other genere, fields as well. And Dan Brown had played a vital role in developing my interest in History as well =)
Discovering about cultures, secrets from the past, architectural values and histories, changes in societies and their reasons, the masterpieces of arts from the time gone, are some of my major interests. Knowledge is something that is never quite quenchable..In a hope that I'd learn healthy from this group I joined that the minute I reactivated my account.. I hope this will suffice & looking forward for more disscussions-

Welcome Farah, Tina, Walt, Clayton and Janis to the History Book Club.

Folks, remember to read the rules and guidelines, the orientation and if you need some assistance with the rules and guidelines - we are here to help.

If you mention any book or any author, each time you need to cite them properly. During a discussion of a book here on the HBC, you do not have to repeat the citation of that particular book and author unless you are mentioning a different book by the same author.

There are three parts to any citation here: book cover, author's photo if available and always the author's link. If the photo is not available, then you simply state no photo. We do the citations this way so that the powerful goodreads software can populate our site correctly.

All of your backgrounds are very interesting and I am sure that we will learn a great deal from each one of you.

Welcome Jeff to the History Book Club. We are delighted to have you join us from the Centennial State.

Colorado also has an interesting history:

Colorado has been nicknamed the “Centennial State” because it became a state in the year 1876, 100 years after the signing of our nation's Declaration of Independence. Colorado also is called “Colorful Colorado” presumably because of it's magnificent scenery of mountains, rivers and plains.

I am sure that you enjoy the natural beauty which make up the state of Colorado.

We are delighted to have you with us and a special thank you to Becky for posting the links to the rules and guidelines and other helpful links to get you off to a great start.

Enjoy the group.
