Welcome to the group. May I ask when you taught at UT-Austin? I'm just wondering if you were colleagues of some of the Pulitzer-nominated or winning historians who are teaching in Austin today? (David Oshinsky and HW Brands are the two professors there I know of who have either won or been nominated in that category - perhaps there are others. I know Sanford Levinson might have received that honor in a different category too?)

Bob | 6 comments Hello everybody, name is Bob 50 y/old lives in Central Pa. I read mostly non-ficton, Civil War, WWII, Biographies, Autobiograhies. I try to read Presidential memiors and a biography about them to get contrasting views of POTUS. Right now I'm reading Island of Vice by Richard Zacks it's about T Roosevelt trying to clean up NYC and after that either Shiloh 1862 by Winston Groom or Gregg Allmans autobiograhy

message 4657: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Welcome, Bob. Glad you could join us. We have a regular POTUS offering, so check it out next time.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how the books you've mentioned should look:

Island Of Vice Theodore Roosevelt's Doomed Quest To Clean Up Sin Loving New York by Richard Zacks Richard Zacks Richard Zacks

Shiloh, 1862 by Winston Groom Winston Groom Winston Groom

My Cross to Bear by Gregg Allman Gregg Allman Gregg Allman

Hello Bob,

Nice try with the citation - but please read what Bryan kindly posted for you. The citation has three parts: book cover, author's photo if available and always the author's link. The Mechanics of the Board thread would be a big help for you and Bryan provided that link for you in his welcome to you (message 4757)

Island Of Vice Theodore Roosevelt's Doomed Quest To Clean Up Sin Loving New York by Richard Zacks by Richard Zacks Richard Zacks

My Cross to Bear by Gregg Allman by Gregg Allman Gregg Allman

I have attached the citations the way they are supposed to look above.

Ellen | 1 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Ellen. I recently moved to Pakistan with a French NGO and I figured this was a good time to catch up on my reading - and what better way to do that than with a dedicated group of history buffs like me! I recently received my history degree from Rice University and since then have been sorely missing those long discussions of obscure historical events and people.

I see I've missed out on quite some good reads, but I'm looking forward to joining in the next few discussions.

Ellen

Welcome Ellen from Pakistan! How are you finding it there? Believe it or not, you are not the first and only person from Pakistan in the group. The History Book Club is quite the international group.

For those folks not familiar with the acronym - NGO means non governmental agency.

We are glad to have you reading with us and maybe you can give us some ideas for developing some threads on that part of the world with some interesting authors and books.

Glad to have you,

Bentley

Tim | 6 comments Good god! I can't believe someone welcomes each and every person who joins this group. That's so cool!

My name is Tim. I live in the Eastern Cape in South Africa. I used to live in Cape Town but a history book changed my life, and I moved back here to this place, where the most profound events in the history of South Africa occurred.

The book is called Frontiers, by Noel Mostert. I have read it three times and it always blows my mind.

If you want to understand South Africa, or the colonial ventures of Britian, this book is like no other. It's not a light read, and not many South Africans have read it, but JM Coetzee describes it (after pointing out it's shortcomings) as the most important book ever written on the history of South Africa.
