Bryan Craig Welcome Sigrun, Blossom, Nancy, and Christa. You can to the right place.

Nancy, don't forget to add your book citation:

Great glad to have you Nancy but make sure to learn how to do citations.

Check out message 4590 and the links that Alisa left for you.

Caesar's Women (Masters of Rome, #4) by Colleen McCullough by Colleen McCullough Colleen McCullough

For every book and every time we mention it; we post the book cover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link.

If we mention an author, we always do the last two parts: the author's photo when available and always the author's link.

G Hodges (glh1) | 901 comments I am 'mature' in age, but continue to be young is spirit. I am trying to get than hang of this, and find that some of your comments are quite compelling reasons to read a book! I have found out however, that I just don't have enough time, so I will have to be more particular in my choices. I have also found that my appreciation of any given book varies with the day, so I am terribly grateful for my Kindle. I will try again to post a book cover! Thanks.

Blossom (blossom5778) Welcome, Nancy! I'm new here too :)
I must admit I am somewhat confused with the book/author 'citation' comments. That is required when I mention a book, correct? Such as right now I am reading A History of the American People by Paul Johnson... But if I am not mentioning a book, then no need for a book/author citation, correct?
I honestly didn't even know about that feature, though, and think it's pretty neat now that I do!

Benedict | 1 comments Hi all, my name's Benedict and I live in Leeds, UK. I did an undergrad degree in History and an MA in Medieval Studies. While I'm interested in most history, I'm especially interested in medieval history, religious history, cultural history, the history of ideas, mediterranean history, naval history and the Crusades.

I volunteer at a local archive to keep my paleography and latin skills sharp. Continuing the theme of historically named pets, I have a goldfish named Bohemond for Bohemond of Antioch.

Bea | 1830 comments Welcome, Benedict! There's something for everybody here.

For this club as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post itself.

Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book itself and/or author and increases the readability of your posts. This is how a cited book should look:

Duane Donecker | 12 comments Hello everyone, my name is Duane, I am 46 years old, married and have a six year old son named Jesiah. I retired from the US Navy on 31 Dec 2005 after 20 years of honorable service. I have been married to a wonderful lady named Sandi for the past 14 years. We have a very wonderful 6 year old son named Jesiah who is the light of our lives. Since retiring I have just been enjoying my family and reading those books I never had a chance to read all these years. Currently I am also attending college full time working on two degree's. One in military history and another in drug and alcohol counseling. I have just started work on both degrees and am going to San Diego City College for the history degree using my 9/11 GI Bill and paying out of my own pocket going to Mueller College for the alcohol and drug counseling degree, I don't know how I have time to do that, spend time with my family and read but I'm getting it done.

I love studying and reading all types of history to include world history, history of all nations and even history of such things as coke or pepsi. Lately I have been into reading medical history.

My current book is Henry I by C. Warren Hollister Henry I by C. Warren Hollister C. Warren Hollister Henry I by C. Warren Hollister

I look forward to getting to know everyone!! C. Warren Hollister

I tend to read a wide variety of books and switch genres so that I don't get bored. Currently, I am working my way through WWII in the pacific.

Christa Just a friendly question, why are we citing to books we are already reading? I found a copy of Colleen McCulloch's book, and while I'm a trained historian, and a trained attorney, I can't see a reason to site for a pleasure read. If those who have signed up to read the book are discussing up, it seems to be like a reading log, which has been shown to decrease children's desire to read.

Hi Christa:

If you are discussing the McCullough book in those threads, you don't need to cite it. For everything else, you do need to cite it. So, every time you cite a book, it gets listed under "books mentioned on this topic" and "author mentioned on this topic." This is very helpful for people to see what books are talked about and what you might find interesting. I use that feature all the time and it helps me pick out books.

We are citing for the benefit of other group members. If a book you have already read sounds interesting to me, I can simply click on the cover and get additional info in a flash. We are also citing for the benefit of the wider Goodreads community. You may have noticed that the book and author pages on GR have a feature that tells readers in what groups books or authors are being discussed. That feature is populated by our citations.

Hello Christa, you will find a great many legal eagles in the group who love history too. And Bea and Bryan have given you some of the reasons we cite the books and authors we are reading or mentioning. It takes a second or two; but then your post does not get lost in the shuffle. Others will be able to see what you said about a particular book or author and be able to join in on the discussion with you. Without the citations, then after about 5 posts after yours; your post and everything you have to say would be lost in the shuffle. We also think the book covers look cool and by all means make sure that Jake follows the citation rules too. I am only kidding but such a cute dog should not go unnoticed.

All best,

Bentley
