zed (4triplezed) Hi, I am a 52 year old male who loves History with a specific bent towards British history. That does not stop me reading other areas that I suddenly become acquainted with. I in fact discovered this group due the discussion thread on Peter Wilson superb The Thirty Year War Europe's Tragedy and look forward to the discussion and all other things history that this group brings to this great subject.

Karen (karen-ann) Welcome to the group. There is so much to explore here as I am just discovering being a new member myself. The folders/threads on different areas of history are very well set up and organised here just looking through those has thrown up many hidden gems in the few days since I joined.

Becky (httpsbeckylindrooswordpresscom) | 1217 comments Hi 4ZZZ! Welcome to our truly international book club! We've got great books, discussions and people here so pull up a chair and get comfy.

For this club as you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how the book you mentioned should look:

The Thirty Year's War Europe's Tragedy by Peter H. Wilson Peter H. Wilson (no photo)

David Morris | 3 comments Hello everyone. My name is david morris, and I'm a 25 year old student living in columbus, ohio. Thank you for letting me be part of this group. I do read fiction, but nothing comes close to reading a great non fiction novel, and imagining yourself in that same time period, walking & talking with some of the greatest, most ingenious minds throughout the history of the short, yet magnificent span of time we humans have laid claim to. It is simply magnificent that somebody like me, a 25 year old student boyrn in 1987, can take a walk through history. A history that without the literature we embrace, would be an almost impossible task. I will update you on my readings, and let you know my feelings and thoughts while I'm reading and traveling back through time. What a great gift we have been given. The gift of written literature that enables people like you and me to see where we have been, and the lessons that have been passed down throughout the generations. As of now, I am reading " surviving the sword," by Brian MacArthur. It's about prisoners Of the japanese, either caught or captured by the Imperial Japanese forces. These prisoners, In spite of the geneva conventions, Were treated like alien slaves. Besides, according to all japanese military men, capture/ surrender was the most dishonorable act one could commit. Compared to the comrades who were prisoners of the germans, who were mostly treated well and fed adequately, these hundreds of thousands of men were subject to heinous brutality that sometimes defies logic as you're reading. The only reason I am able to hear their first hand account of these unspoeakable atrocities is because these prisoners risked torture and execution to keep journals and drawings hidden from the guards. These heroic men are the very reason I'm able to sit here quietly, safe in my home, and read their last testaments. They wanted the world to know that they did not go down without a fight, and risked life and limb to help one another. Their story is proof that good deeds, compassion, and the innate ability to make the best out kf a horrid situation. And to top it all off, these 'men' on average were just boys of 19,20,21,& 22 years old. Their sacrifices, and abilities to adapt to inhospitable, even life threatening conditions remains the ultimate example of good triumphing evil. The days of warriors with such courage are outlined. In this excellent book. Now tell me.....how can fiction ever top reality? It can't, and never will is my answer.
